It’s unfathomable why they made the XR absolutely huge. It is a gorgeous phone but the size is a complete deal breaker. How are you supposed to fit it in your pocket or use it with one hand?

Before anyone says that it’s the way the market is, the standard 4.7 phones always massively outsold the plus models

I am not so sure that this is true anymore....

Price is a big factor with a lot of people. It played a part of 4.7 phones outselling plus models.

I dunno, the price difference between the standard and plus models is pretty negligible, maybe a couple of quid a month.

I wonder if the reason the made it so big was to upsell people to the XS (5.8)

I would like have seen an XR model that’s a bit smaller. The first thing that struck me when I picked the phone up in the Apple store yesterday was how wide it feels in my hand....and I’ve got very large hands. I know it’s atually a bit narrower than the XS Max but the XR “felt” wider. Perhaps it’s the thickness of the XR that’s contributing to this illusion? Anyway, on the positive front, I was pleasantly surprised by the screen of the XR....it looked perfectly fine to my eye.

The large phones aren't made to be used one-handed. That is one of the reasons Apple created the "Reachability" feature.

Apple has never marketed the XR, XS, or the XS Max as a one-handed use phone.

I never stated that they did market the XS or XR as a one handed device, but instead meant that the inability to be able to use the phone one handed is a dealbreaker for me, and no doubt many other people too

In photos and videos it doesn’t look much thicker than my iPhone X.

In person I guess it’s a different story ?

Well the iPhone 6 and 6 plus sold combined 220 mil units. By far the most popular iPhones of all time.

I bought my 6 plus on launch and kept it 3 years. It was sold out for months. The market did tell Apple something.

Most people bought the 6 because you couldn’t get your hands on a plus as well.

Well yeah, if you compare a mm in terms of thickness vs width, of course the thickness is a lot more noticeable. You don't notice a mm in terms of a width measuring 75 mm (1% difference) , but you do notice a mm in terms of thickness measuring 8.3 mm (12%).
I'm amazed that everyone's fingers and hands and pockets are so precisely calibrated that 1 mm difference in a phone's dimensions upsets the cosmic balance.

So my agenda is to tell everyone to not buy the iPhone XR but instead get another iPhone, the XS Max (another Apple product) instead? Er...so yeah I guess I do have an agenda. But the furiosity of your response makes it seem as if I am telling everyone to buy an Android phone instead.
You must think your opinion is important in telling people not to do something. Amazing a more expensive product has better specs, who knew?

If they’d have made it 1080p and the size of the XS, then it would have been killer I think.

I don’t mind the size, but I agree with you that if it was 1080 P, that might even persuade myself, even though I do have my preferences with OLED. There is nothing wrong with the XR display, but if it would have adopted the 1080 P from the Plus iPhones, likely would reach out to those who are more tech orientated, but I don’t think the average consumer would care either way.

Could Apple be testing the water with the XR size to become the standard iphone size of the future?

When the giant phone fad passes and Apple wants you to buy ipads again(not MAX or Plus as a tablet substitute). This size device is potentially the goldilocks dimensions for screen size and the right thickness for a decent size battery. One iphone to rule them all?

SE is dead.
Plus is dead.
MAX offers no hardware or software differences to XS (apart from some minor diff like side panels in some apps).

The plus models outsold the original models starting with the 6S.

It is not really unfathomable. Apple knows that 6.1 inch is TOO big for some people. So much so that a lot of people will pay more to get the 5.8 XS(like me). I'd get the Xr if it was the same size or smaller than the XS. Apple knows this and probably did a market research and made the Xr 6.1 to get people to buy the $999 but smaller XS.

Here is a link to some photos of the XR and XS Max side by side and stacked.

Edit: You will need to navigate to Post #12. Sorry about that.

Thanx for pointing out this thread. I’m the OP on the thread. I mentioned it on there too. The XR is pretty much same size Max. If money isn’t an issue or eye strain with OLED...the Max is the one to get. Been using mine since launch and loving it.

If you're going to handle a bulky phone anyway, you might as well get the bigger screen on the Max since the width and weight are really similar to the XR.
XR feels significantly lighter to me compared to the XS Max. I held one in each hand today and was shocked at how light the XR felt. That's a huge benefit to the device in my opinion, and one that many seem to be glossing over.

Why do so many people come on here trying to sway others to their way of thinking when it all comes down to individual preference? The best iPhone is the one each of us chooses for him or her self.

I returned my Max after a week because, it felt too big. The XR is a more manageable size. Weight feels less than Max especially in my pockets with the Apple leather case on.

If that’s the conclusion I think we can shut this forum down.

What’s interesting is, many are saying actually the XR feels much larger in the hand over the XS Max, so in theory, I would say most don’t care about the weight as much as they do the overall size of the phone in the hand if it’s uncomfortable to hold.
