I’m waiting for the hack to turn the air pod into a Bluetooth speaker and use four to make a surround sound necklace or one for bike helmet speaker or two for an on-ear headphones making it look like a mini air pods pro max. :p
Next, figure out how to record audio.

One notable design difference is AirTag's lack of a built-in keyring hole, which iFixit attributes to Apple's history of "turning essential functions into premium, add-on accessories."

Just say it like it is: Often, nApple cares more about form than function. The lack of a keyring hole is inexcusable and just plain stupid.

Any speaker can be used as a mic, too. :)

Counterpoint: the airtag is better because it has no useless hole that I don’t need.

I imagine a majority of people are going to attach it to something, requiring them to buy yet another accessory.

You can imagine that, but that does not prove it’s true. Like I said, I used gaffer’s tape for my bike. For my camera bag and messenger bag I just stuck them naked in pockets. For my kid’s AirPod case, i shoved it in between the outer silicone case and the airpod case. No holes required in any of these cases. It seems that unless you want to use it as a keyring (I have no keys) or a luggage tag (seems inadvisable, given how luggage is abused in transit - better to put it inside the luggage), there are many situations that require no loop or hole.

"Apple's history of "turning essential functions into premium, add-on accessories." Why do people keep saying such dumb things? Has anyone ever heard of amazon? here is a link: https://www.amazon.com/Protector-Co...ds=air+bag+accessories&qid=1619960776&sr=8-23". so 4 keyrings for $9.99, or 2.50/per. Does iFixit think that is expensive? If you do, you probably can't avoid a tracker by any manufacturer anyway.

Truth, yes Apple sells accessories, well-engineered, good materials, but.....A lot of manufacturers also sell accessories, some as good, some better, some more expensive, most way cheaper.
Besides, there are plenty of non-key ring use cases for airTags. Having a simple disc design lets users add the kind of case they think will fit their requirement. I definitely would prefer the smallest possible design for the air tag, instead of saddled with additional volume just for the sake of a key ring hole.

I think they could have at least put one of those tiny holes like on jump drives where you can put the little string though. Certainly there is room for that, and it wouldn’t detract from the aesthetic

Keys? My phone, watch, and car can all lock/unlock my house. I keep the physical backup in my glovebox of my car. My phone can be used for my car, and I have a physical backup in my wallet case.

What else is there to lose?

Don’t keep your house key in your car. If someone breaks into your car, they get your address from the paperwork in the glovebox and in your case, the house key too.

I hear you on wondering why people are buying 8. Personally I’ll have just 1 for my work bag.

I don't have a problem with Apple putting so much care into a product.

I do have a problem with the fact that everyone is covering this product like it's the next Apple Watch when it's dramatically less than the next Apple Pencil... it's hard to think of a product that matters less than the AirTag.

I'm confused - I already owned a pack of Tiles 6 years ago. They died and I never replaced them because there wasn't anything useful to attach them to. Why do people still have stuff they lose?

Wallet? What for? Nearly everything is digitized and on my phone or watch. The case on my phone holds 3 physical cards as backup.

Phone? My Watch can help me find it (honestly, this is probably the most useful functionality on the Apple Watch...)

What else is there to lose?
Not everybody has the expensive things you have.

I noticed these have a firmware, i wonder if they will be able to push new features/updates to this first generation of the airtags. If not, I’m thinkinf the second gen airtags will be much better in terms of range and possibly reverse tracking.
I noticed that too and was wondering the same

Gaffers tape? Sort of destroys the concept of the asthetic, doesn't it? Plus, again, I'll bet keys are the number one thing this will be used for.

Leaving out a hole was a pointless thing to do.

What aesthetic? I taped it to the underside of my bike saddle. Making it visible would serve no purpose other than reminding the bike thief to remove it and toss it in the trash.

It’s clear what the point of omitting it was - making a useful hole while maintaining full structural integrity and moisture/dust protection would require the device to be somewhat bigger, and many people require no such hole and thus benefit from a smaller device with a wide choice (7 pages on amazon) of holders.

Adding a hole would be a pointless thing to do.

Washington is on the quarter, not Jefferson.

It's sad to me how underrated Apple's design and engineering are. The company is constantly criticized for "costs more, does less" and "overpriced" and "outdated." But looking at the x-rays comparing the different tracking devices, it's immediately obvious how much more thought went into designing AirTags than the products that came before it. The other two look pedestrian, and the internal components are just placed wherever. In the AirTag, the layout of everything inside has been deliberately placed so that no space is wasted, and there's a beautiful symmetry to everything.
You and that other dude might want to get a room together with Tim.

Ha. Apple Park also crossed my mind.
I know a building is not a tracker… I still bet they applied some lesson(s) from their campus build into that little tracker.

And the quarter x-ray is such a fun touch. Well played.
Could be a tracker for the Earth. I’m sure the Sun would want to know if one of its planets went missing.

You do realize that if the thief gets farther than 100 meters, its useless?

A loop on the edge would not harm structural integrity or moisture protection one bit.

consumers who want to minimize impact of their consumption on the environment
Consumers who want to minimize impact on the environment will:
a) Stop buying stuff. The less they consume, the less they impact.
b) Recycle. RELIGIOUSLY. Like EVERYTHING they’re not using is going right back to Apple (they take back more than Apple products) or to one of the other local recycle places.
