I've been with iphone since day one but every year for the past couple years around this "eminent announcement" drama time period I start to consider my Android options. I mean SERIOUSLY consider them (can you say Samsung Note!). The whole veil of secrecy thing with Apple was kinda cool at first. Now it's just starting to piss me off. The 4S was the first time I didn't upgrade. And I have a feeling there are legions like me who didn't upgrade either. Don't care how much money they're making, the faithful are becoming a bit weary and less tolerant of these half-step upgrades. iPad 3 and iPhone 6 (or "5" or "Pro" or whatever the hell they wanna call it) better REVOLUTIONIZE because the evolutionary thing has gotten lame!!!

So the new iPhone needs to revolutionize smart phones? Or you'll go to an Android.. are they revolutionizing smart phones? Why do you demand so much from one company but not the others? You clearly aren't one of the "faithful", and as honesty doesn't go hand in hand with anonymity on the net you can spare me the rebuttal but I'd hazard to guess your first iPhone was also your first Apple product. Secrecy isn't new for Apple. Its always been that way.

When you crank out plastic pieces of #%@$, then it doesn't really matter if you release info early, cause no one wants to copy your plastic piece of #$%@.

Thats also why you get a iPhone 3G, and then the 3GS, or the 4 and then the 4S, cause you can't reinvent the wheel every 6 months, nor would I want them to try! Good design doesn't come at Quickie Mart, it takes time and patience. Thats why Ives builds my devices and you whine that the 2nd best selling cell phone of all time looks like the best selling phone of all time.

Finally, legions of people didn't upgrade from the 4 to the 4S? lulz So who did? Cause they are selling quite a few of them last time I checked. Do us a favor, buy yourself a Samsung Whatever, get your giant screen, get your stylus.

I think I'll stick with my iPad 2 and iPhone 4. Not because I don't think they're worthy upgrades, but because I just don't want to spend $500 every year when a new one comes out.

To me, tablets are not a once a year type of upgrade and maybe not even once every two years. A phone is a different story but even then, with Apple incrementally updating the iPhone it is hard to jump on board that bandwagon every year.

They should be able to rig up some kind of display signal, I mean, it’s just an LCD panel, and I’d suspect the pinouts are pretty close (RGB, power, ground). Just get an iPad ribbon cable, and attach some wire “jumpers” into the assumed signal positions. Of course, I’ve also shorted out stacks of electronics playing around ... so maybe they’re just playing it safe :D

Um, no. It's probably LVDS (hell, I'm assuming it's LVDS cuz I don't know). The bus width and the input voltage and clock rates are unknown. Oh, and the pinouts. What the heck is the pinouts?

You don't just simply plug this stuff in and expect something to happen..... unless it's smoke.

Do you have any actual confirmation that this part is destined for the iPad 3, or is it just conjecture based on the being the same physical size and rumors of the iPad 3 having a "Retina Display"?

Because if you don't have confirmation that this part is going to be in the next iPad, then all that has been confirmed is the existence of an appropriate high-res display for the iPad 3. I'm tired of "confirmed" when it's really "rumored by someone else" or "hardware confirmed to exist that matches the rumors". Neither is actual confirmation that this is actually an iPad 3 display.

It was sold by a parts dealer that sold it as an iPad 3 display.

Are you telling me you can discern the individual pixels of an iPhone 4/4s from a foot away? If so, that's pretty impressive and hat's off to you sir!

You can't? How old are you?

I'm pretty young(18), but I can discern them pretty clearly until about 16" away.

What I'm really curious about now is the SOFTWARE side… Apple always surprises with software to add some kind of new functionality. Like Garage Band in the iPad 2 with the "pressure sensitive" instruments and really awesome ui. They probably have something great for iPad 3, not to mention Siri is probably coming to the first non-iPhone 4s device.

This is getting boring.

It's retina the new Ipad we know that. Give it a day when we all get our Ipad 3's we will all be bored of the screen as it does the same thing.

Unlike the Iphone retina update it won't be as good for Ipad as it's already got a decent screen.

The iPad 2 screen isn't that good. I noticed this when the iPad 1 first came out. It actually has a lower density than the first iPhones.

As someone who is really picky about screen, this is what just drove me to sell my iPad. Just minutes ago I got $415 for 16gb wifi. Good sell?

I think the screen looks fine. Bright, no pixels on the text, looks like a Laptop screen.

Retina will make the screen more dull and less bright actually but it will be more detailed. Who actually zooms in on a webpage for the text though? Nobody. Might be good for pictures possibly ebooks but for most people retina will just be a run of the mill perk.

That kind of insult to someone for basically wanting an improved product is what should warrant at least a warning. I've gotten warnings on Macrumors for much less than this, but to flat out slam someone for their hope of a better product? The mods removed all the MJ comments (thank god) but not this offensive drivel?

I suppose one could assume that anything short of blind faith towards apple should be thrown out, ridiculed and told to shut up and get off mac rumors?

Is the need or even want for a better iPhone not one of your priorities? Or would you prefer to see the market become stagnant and accept whatever Apple would like you to accept?

That said, you should reconsider telling someone to 'get the ****** off our site'. Its not your site, its public and its free. You have no business telling anyone what to do. Youre not a mod nor an admin.

Read the forum rules while youre at it.

I don't like laptop screens either. I hold them really far away from me or I can't look at them for long periods of time.

Maybe I'm just visually picky.

This comment brought to you from the department of, "no, duh".

Why would you upgrade every year? The iPad to iPad2 was not a huge transition, nor was the iPhone4 to iPhone4s. But skipping a generation or two is worth while. Going from the the 3GS to the 4s is a pretty big jump, and the same will be true for the iPad3. Computers will get you a couple of generations before upgrades are required. iPhones and iPad will get their eventually but right now skipping a generation is about the right upgrade cycle.

I use Android phones at work every day, including the Galaxy Note. Everyday that I use an Android phone reaffirms to me that I don't ever want to own one. If you are looking for a great deal on the newest latest flavor of Android phone, the supposed REVOLUTIONIZE phone that was suppose to be the iPhone killer, there is a $99 fire sale on the Galaxy Prime Nexus. I suspect if you wait a bit there will also be a fire sale on the Galaxy Note.

I find Android very frustrating to deal with. No two phones have the same UI experience. I pick up one Android phone and I have to scroll up and down. I pick up another Android phone and I have to scroll side to side. Some come with a file browser and others don't. There is nothing consistent to them. It is a horrible user experience. When I pickup my iPhone, iPad or even my iPod Touch the user experience is consistent. I know what to expect which helps improve the user experience.

ORLY?

Come on - everybody knows, that next week will usher in Android and WP7 announcements ranging from HTC Velocity LTE (nice one!) over an international version of Nokia Lumia 900 up to the possibility of the Galaxy S3.

So actually a fire sale on the Nexus Prime is pretty damn sure to deplete stocks.

Come on frigging iFixit amaterus, hire a serious electronic engineer and power it up already!

I doubt of they can afford to hire an EE that could power up an LDC with an undocumented ribbon. That is an art!

Also, at the demeanor of these presentation, keep on thinking how many Guy Fawkes masks hang around their offices and worn at night.

Oh I forgot, the latest Android phone is only the latest for about 5 minutes before they come out with a another latest one. Yes, guess they would need a way to clear out that Android phone that became obsolete 5 minutes ago.

I think the Android phone names need to be more ridiculous because they sure aren't now

Wish they could have figured out some way to connect it!

Expecting the ifixit crew to sucessfully power up a potentially prototype retina display is rather like expecting a car mechanic to write some software to reprogram the microchips in a cars ECU.
