It's not "caused" but the result of this combination of a hot i9 CPU and the reduced circulation, caused by this membrane (up to now just in the MBP 13" with Touch Bar).

So, let's say finally YES...

Now that's an interesting theory! I would personally guess no, since I doubt the keyboard plays a role in ventilating the air cooling system, but iFixit could certainly test this theory. See if an i9 with its keyboard torn off can maintain 2 GHz.

I have a dream:

What's if Apple would throw all defect, replaced keyboards in front of the door of Jony Ive's house - and maybe a part to that of those engineers, working on this misfortunate butterfly mechanism :D

It's not ridiculous if the eventual goal is to get out of the Mac business altogether. Remove ports, make dysfunctional keyboards, glue / solder parts so that they can't be modified or repaired, and raise the prices. Eventually folks will either buy iPads, which have no ports or keyboards, and also are hard to repair, as they are far cheaper than Mac laptops - or buy non-Apple laptops. If Apple is NOT trying to sabotage the Mac line, then they're making some seriously flawed decisions with the new designs.

You understand that Apple made the exact same design decisions with the original iMac, right? The product they released when they were all but irrelevant as a company and desperately needed a win? And yet now you suggest that the mentality behind those design decisions is intentionally trying to build bad products?

Who are you people? Why are you Mac owners if you do not seek products that constantly push forward in every way? And if you don't, and you're not a Mac owner, why are you here?

The 2015 Keyboard was fantastic. I'm still not sure why they redesigned somethign that was working perfectly fine to begin with.

The idea that something can't be improved unless it is obviously broken is so, so stupid. "Ain't broke, don't fix it" has NEVER been the mentality at Apple, ever, and if you expected that you are dumb as rocks.

Ive's order was:
Thinnest as possible - he did not care on performance of the keyboard, the battery working time and gave us a huge, non-ergonomic Trackpad nobody needs and took away MagSafe and some useful ports

Nope. Still ridiculous. Actually even more ridiculous when you say it like that. “Let’s make our products suck so people will move to our other products. Because making crappy products will definitely improve our brand image!”

No...just no. If they wanted to back out of the Mac business they would just do it. We hear the same crap every single year. Same complaints. There’s always a new gate or issue. And people still buy and life goes on

The designs of Macs the last several years have not been a "push forward", at least in the opinion of many longtime Mac customers. You are referring to the Apple corporation that existed between 1997-2011. Some folks don't see removing still needed ports and building increasingly thin, delicate, and hard to repair/modify Macs as pushing forward. Oh, and I have been a Mac owner for a long time.

You people give him way more power/credit than he has.

Does anyone think that they’re intentionally sabotaging their 'MacBook' product line so people move over to iOS?
Right because making crappy Macs is totally going to get people to buy iPads.

It's been an obvious push forward in terms of design and aggressively adopting new standards and dropping old ones, which is the way Apple has operated SINCE ALWAYS. Literally always. Why would you expect anything else? The very very first Mac had no fan, which cause numerous overheating issues, and was not user-upgradeable. WHY WOULD YOU EXPECT ANYTHING ELSE??????? Your behavior is indefensibly stupid, just absolutely the dumbest **** I've ever heard in my entire life.

I have some advice for you: don't buy a Mac if you don't want a Mac. What you are complaining about is literally the soul of the Mac. It's precisely what makes a Mac a Mac. If you don't like that, great news - they are hundreds of other computer manufacturers. Check them out.

You're point?

I thought that would be apparent.

Anyway...Apple intentionally sabotaging their line of laptops, in order to move customers who want a laptop to instead consider a tablet, will drive customers who want a laptop to other laptop manufacturers. Thus losing customers and revenue, and being a stupid move on Apple's part.

You could go with another laptop manufacturer where everything is perfect and choices don’t have to be made. Right?
Arguments like these are the worst thing about the MacRumors forums. It's about the OS, citysnaps. It has always been about the OS!! Sure, I'll just stop using all my software and change my entire workflow *this year* after a 15 year run just because Apple decided to start being idiots. Makes sense. Nope. Come on! Do you really want the Mac to be killed off because it kinda sounds like you want the Mac to be killed off.

Whats up with all these tech sites nowadays? Whats the fixation with keyboard with a dust cover? Can we move on from this ? Hello!

Will a third party make this so those with the 16/17 Pros can install it on their machines?
I don't think so. The keyboard on MBP is highly integrated that a third party will find it very difficult to make one. 16/17 will not get one of these new keyboard. Apple is trying to push ppl to buy new products again.
[doublepost=1532098001][/doublepost]
This seems more like it will stop the failures short term, but over the mid-long as dust does work it’s way in and build up it could well be worse at trapping it in there?
Why would so much dust be trapped under the keys? I guess they may not get in there at the first place.

All laptops have a set of engineering pros and cons to consider, involving both hardware and software. Choose the laptop where those tradeoffs work in your favor.

If 20 year old USB-A ports and thick physical dimensions and weight, are more important to you than the OS, then you need to look at other manufacturers.

Me...I'm totally stoked with my 2017 MBP, its features, superior ports, wide gamut display, fast and accurate keyboard, compact physical size/weight, and OS. Along with millions of others who repeatedly reward Apple with their currency and purchase Apple Macs.

You...If you're not happy with same set of attributes, then you need to consider other computers. Make a choice. Easy. Life is about making choices that work for you.

What? Seriously? Nice try.

When your keyboard stops functioning properly, or when you go to re-sell your MacBook Pro and no one wants it because the keyboard issue has been on mainstream news sites, you will probably feel a lot less stoked with your 2017 MBP.

I'll cross that bridge should that happen. I suspect it won't. My keyboard been flawless. And allows me to type faster and more accurately. A huge plus.

I would rather have a minor keyboard problem than a gpu problem that most of the previous generations had and took Apple years to issue a replacement warranty.

It’s how they achieve their super thin computer.

Oh my word. If you're trying to type a document and you're cruising along at 60 words per minute, that's great. When you have to stop every couple of words because your "A" key only works 50% of the time, you'll be slowed to a snails pace. How is this a minor problem? This effectively ruins your computer and the *temporary* fix costs something like $600.

I've owned a 13" MacBook Pro for years. 2008, 2011, 2014, 2016 replaced by Apple with a 2017.

I will not be satisfied, nor will I drop the issue until the issues with my 2017 MBP have been permanently resolved.

Well I live in a very dry high altitude area where dust is a daily issue, it just came to me as why there is so many Macs and Macbooks for sale on Craigslist.

I know that I don't WANT the Mac to be killed off - Apple is slowly doing that on its own by minimalist hardware directions being taken over the last 3 or 4 years. This has indeed pushed me away from buying new Apple laptops (still using iMacs) in favor of PC laptops with the ports I need running Linux (I hate Windows). I wish Apple would license MacOS to other hardware vendors so that folks who prefer that OS aren't forced into using Apple hardware offerings of late. To top it off, Apple is re-instituting the T2 chip - which first appeared in the (1,2) and (1,3) MBPs round 2007, but was soon discontinued. The T2 chip makes it difficult to impossible to alter UEFI to accept installations of non-"blessed" OS's (namely Linux or non-Apple Unix flavors). I prefer MacOS on my Macs, but if/when Apple support for my Macs is withdrawn after several years, I'd like the option of installing Linux on the old, but still functioning hardware. I still have a 2006 MBP(1,1) which still runs with Linux.
