For some reason I've read all the replies to this... but anyways...

Does anybody remember the nail in the coffin from the last fakes?

Looking under photoshop in RGB seperation, the word 'fake' was written in the red layer.

Now I don't have the real time or energy to do this on all the pics, but if it's from a similar source this may also be the case.

And as far as I can tell, this is definately a fake. However I LOVE these rumors and everything that makes waiting go by much faster. It's nice having some false rumors, it's great to speculate, and I hate it when given exactly what's coming up. (ThinkSecret).

Probably not real but there are a couple of things that keep me from screaming false...

1. It's a big box... meaning that you would need an oversized printer to print all of this without seeing seems. You would also need the glossy photo paper as mentioned before to get the glare... but if you've ever felt the glossy photo paper you would realize that it's heavier paper. Heavier paper is not easy to bend around curves and keep smooth transition. And if you tried to force heavy paper around the fold you would be able to see cracks in the paper. I think it would looked beveled up at the fold. It also looks really clean around the hole for the handle... but that's hard to tell from low res pictures. It just looks like a really good job of glueing to the box if it is a fake. If this were just a photoshop hack I would jump on the bandwagon too... but little things are keeping me from it.

2. If you listen to the sound in the video you can hear it make noise when it is being moved back and forth. I have a small empty box in front of me and i moved it back and forth and could barely hear anything (at least not enough for my cell to pick up), I put this little 6 or so pound paper weight in the box and moved it again and you can hear the "scratching" noise loud enough now. So if that is fake then they at least did a good job by adding weight to the thing.

3. IF apple is gonna release this 500 mac then this is a big step for them and a first for a lot of things. You don't see pictures and a lot of writing on the pro line, but they are trying to reach out to a more budgeted audience. They have to attract the user through packaging not just name recognition. Look at HP's "media center" packaging. They have pictures of screen shots and programs etc. Look at new ipod packaging too... it's starting to look a little different from what we are use to.
The ihome name (i'm not really all that fond of either) but they may be trying to make the user feel all warm and fuzzy inside with something that they know instead of calling something like "digital studio" would could scare away some users that don't know anything about computers. ihome sounds more appealing and friendly.
One last thing about the name is that Centre doesn't have to mean it's British or something... it may just be the "hip" way of saying it. Similar to the way I am finding more and more people spelling colour the old way instead of color. HP already does the Media Center thing so maybe this is just an extra way to distinguish them.

4. Very last and probably the least important is... just look at all that stuff they have in that elevator (if that even is an elevator). Brand new G5, Brand new cinema display, Two new Imacs, and two other small boxes possibly a power adapter for something or a spare battery and something else in that other box. Which it's not unlikely for a company to buy all of that at once but I don't know something just seemed a little weird about having all that stuff together. Probably not important at all though.

I think the thing that would convence me most is if I could find a box of that similar dimensions and shape and size with that same type of handle. I don't think that is any apple box that has been used before is it? I'm sure all of my suspisions can be explained and I'm sure it's not real too, but I'm not gonna be shocked if it comes out to be true.

Here's a question to the believers...

Why would they have software called iWork (which is all but certain) and hardware called iHome?

That don't make no sense.

if iHome sets the new hardware naming convention then the new eMac will be called iSchool, the iMac computers will all be renamed iHome and the PowerMac computers will all be renamed iWork (or maybe PowerWork).

And the Mac branding will be just a distant memory. Thankyou iHome.

See? It all gets a bit ridiculous.

I want to buy a Mac. I don't want an iHome. Macs have a 20 year history of quality. iHomes have nothing.

Next thing you'll be telling me is, that despite the brand recognition, the flash iPod won't be called an iPod but instead will be called an iFlash or iJog. :p :p :p

iwork is supposed to be the office killer isn't it? I'm guessing they call it that because you get your work done with it?

My reasoning of calling the new system iHome is from what I was saying earlier. They aren't targeting this item at you the loyal top of the line user. This is for people wanting a pc to surf the internet and check email, maybe write a school paper or send a picture to Uncle Steve. Apple is wanting something to compete with Dell. They could be calling it iHome to make it sound like your "homes companion". Like this is something that is going to be used in your everday life. iHome is warm and friendly; PowerMac, while sounds awesome to me, may sound a little daunting to someone that has never touched a computer before. You gotta think about the target audience here... I wouldn't be opposed to a dulled down ibook called the "ischool" if they were targeting it for school kids or something.

Something else to think about... where the crap did "iPod" come from? Why not macWalk or macpod? Just because they add a new name doesn't mean all the old ones are going away.

Not to mention the fact that the "ihome" (if it does exist) may not be the new computer... it might just be something to throw on top of your tv to play music and mpegs through.

You negated your own argument! :D You have demonstrated that Apple do not name their products according to how or where they will be used.

thankyou. :D

I did not see anytrhing that looked like a video port on the back....

but it was blurry.... or they may have some new apple only adapter...

:)

Has everyone else missed this?

Apple products ALWAYS come with a sticky plastic wrap around every component. And they NEVER hide components in carboard boxes, which you can see inside the box.It looks like somone redecorated their ibook box and put their fake product inside.

That was for the iMac G5, and the pics turned out to be real. So it doesn't mean anything. No thought the iMac G5 pics were real, and low n behold, we now have a thick cinema display as an iMac.

Talk about gullible... Take a look at your sig. 2.1 GHz Powerbook G5? Ya right. I think you made a typo there :p

lol

I *really do* have a 2.1 PB - its an early prototype ; I use it for all my cooking. I have long since sold my regular Stove. :)

Definitely a better fake. It makes me want to take notes of all the mistakes and make my own fake-something next year.

All I need is access to an elevator...

Yes it was for the iMac G5 but the pictures were fake if you remember it was a picture of a display of some other brand that was a mock up of the new iMac. So even though the iMac turned out for real the pictures were still fake. Just a thought! ;)

I just read the whole thread and there is something I don't think anyone pointed out. In the last picture, look at the CD slot, notice how it looks rainbow colored? That effect only happens when light reflects off of a black INK. Black ink is many colors combined but empty space (hole/slot) is black due to a total lack of color and light. Meaning only a black ink/paint could create the multi color effect. Therefore the CD/DVD slot has to be printed on, rendering this a fake.

1: Hold iPod in direct sunlight at various angles
2: Taste the rainbow. Plastic, particularly the kind Apple uses, produces the same rainbows depending on light source. Fluorescent light is good enough to produce them. However, fluorescent light will NOT produce the effect on black ink, at least to the extent that it could be photographed like this. So the rainbow is actually more evidence that it's real than not.

But it's still a fake.

Now everyone go back to repeating the same 5 posts. Thank you.

Well aparently Apple is already doing something they don't usually do by coming out with a bottom of the line mac (if the rumor for that is true). So maybe they would do something new with the name. I'm just trying to throw out suggestions and have fun with the rumors... so don't try to act like you're the end all know all of Apple.

You people are starting to scare me. You can clearly see that it is made of cardboard and the top has a printout taped to it. Yet you are still debating it?

does apple use tissue paper in their packaging?

what happened to apple shipping this stuff in locked boxes and all that?

of course, the square dot above the i is enough for me.

SOOOOOOOOOO fake!

This is so fake, the packaging is horrible. Totoally not apple like, the pictures of the software on the outside are nothing that apple would do, plus the thing doesn't fit very well in the box, which looks like an ibook package. And finally the actual console is too boxy and plain for an apple product. I know the new iMac is a minimilast machine but this doesn't have near the character of that or even the eMac for that instance which is a bargain mac. Just another person that needs to find something better to do with their time than trying to fake out gullable people.

Sorry dude. I sorta knew that looked a bit arrogant when i posted it. Sorry.

But I gotta say...we are ALL claiming to be experts in things Apple - marketing, packaging, branding, configuration etc. lol. And it is still possible that most of us naysayers will look quite stupid come Tuesday. I know I "proved" the Tiger screenshots (along with a lot of other folk) were fake. (they were real)

I don't believe these pics to be genuine, yet there's been no 100% convincing reason why it can't be a mockup. There's no way known it could be the final product because there are too many packaging mistakes. But as someone suggested a long way back... maybe it's a mock up. Why? who knows the mind of Steve?!

But I still reckon it's a fake but will be very close to what we will see.

Something else, ThinkSecret's rumor never said anything about it being a media center or having a different name. Which seems a bit odd that their rumor feed didn't even allude to that.

ThinkSecret said:
Sources expect the device to feature both DVI and VGA connectivity, although whether this will be provided through dual ports or through a single DVI port with a VGA adapter remains to be seen.

The iHome doesn't have either but could provide it through adapters (which is not user friendly)

ThinkSecret said:
"Think of your traditional iPod owner," said a source. "This new product will be for a Windows user who has experienced the iPod, the ease of use of the iTunes software, and has played around with a Mac at an Apple retail store just long enough to know he'd buy one if it were a little cheaper."

Two things there... they want a Mac and there's nothing about it being a media center.

So the sources were quite specific about who and what this device is for but no mention of it being a media center. A media center implies that you'll connect to your media devices - TV and stereo. Yet no mention by the sources of it having that role. Just a cheap Mac (which this iHome certainly looks! ;) ).

Maybe the iHome is real - maybe these new "Macs" will be made out of cardboard and sticky tape to keep costs down! :D Sorry - there's that arrogance again

Just to throw what I think is another spanner into the works, not like this one needs any more spanners, but it seems that the iMac and the G5 box have Jigsaw (wwwjigsaw24.com) tape on them, they are a major supplier of Macs in the UK and almost everything I have had from them has this tape on it, now if this is an official Apple elevator why would they have products from a third party reseller and it backs up the fact that this is in the UK :D

Oh, ok, I wasn't completely sure if they were real but I'm sold now :D

Yes, they are fake just like all the hype prior to the release of the iMac G5. All these rumors are a lot of fun. Admittedly it helps us to pass the time until Steve makes all this official.
