abrooks - a picture of a media device that includes SCART sockets may well look very plausible to us Brits, but I think our American friends will regard them as so unfamiliar that it can't possibly be an Apple product.

But its just so convincing :p

The text and image on the front of the box are horribly off-center. Methinks Apple would be more careful.

this seems a bit odd - if ihome.com was just a parked domain it would seem normal, but it seems to be a business that's been operating since 1995...

I dont think anyone would give up a name they've had for 10 years without informing their customers well in advance...

good call............ it took about 30 seconds to look that up.

Yeah, I agree with the flaws people have noticed. Also: since when does Apple slap the name of the product across something? You don't get a Powerbook that says "POWERBOOK" or an iBook that says "iBOOK" or anything ... the iPod, yes perhaps, but that's far more subtle.

Ya, I'm going to have to go with "fake," sadly. Four more days, though. :D

thick

It's also ridiculously thick.

The specs are about the same as an ibook G4, so why is it like 5-6" thick? Given that there might be some expandability and the power supply I wouldn't expect it to be too much thicker than a 14" ibook.

Not buying it - but....

I agree we are probably/definitely looking at some clever fun. However, the new iMac G5 DOES say iMac on the backside in rather large type in the Myriad Pro font. So that aspect of the unit might actually be plausible! Or at least the prankster looked at the backside of an iMac for inspiration. :D

Looking again at the last several images when the 'iHome' is being taken out of the box.. the iHome looks like a cardboard box. You can see the joins at the corners. Especially at the second to last image.

Also 'iHome' has no rounded edges - which is something you'd expect to see in an apple consumer product.

I wish it were true... really...

The things that make me dubious are:

1) The spelling of Centre. I doubt they'd localize the spelling.

2) So iHome would come pre-installed with iWork and iLife? Sounds a bit odd. Why would iWork and iLife be software and iHome be hardware. Seems inconsistent and 'Mac' is such an identifiable and winning brand - why drop it? Windows users might ask: Is an iHome compatible with an iMac/eMac/PowerMac? (Also I think the headless iMac will be a replacement for the eMac, and called such). Apple has 'Mac', 'Book' and 'Serve'. They don't need another (misleading) name in their stable.

3) The name Media Center has already been used by Apple's competitors - can't imagine them therefore also using it.

4) You would expect a media center device to have an S-Video connection and possibly RCA audio out or at least a Line Out as well as headphones out.

5) The headphone/Line out jack appears to be on the front of the unit. If you are connecting to speakers, it's untidy to have the cable dangling out the front.

6) The handle making the box carry upside down.

7) No standard VGA. Altho there does appear to be a min-VGA. But what's the point? If their target audience is switchers who already have VGA monitors, why not just include a VGA port?

8) No power button - unless it's on the side, but that would look untidy. A neat front button would be most logical.

9) No apparent LED to show it's on - or breathing when asleep.

Anyway, some of these are mine and thanks to those who spotted the others.

Any thoughts about the software sceen shots next to the handle, or the owners manual in the pictures?

I don't buy it

Smells like BS.

My first observation was "what kind of media center doesn't have video ports" although as someone observed it might be a SCART port. The video is too fuzzy to tell for sure, but all I see are my iBook's ports, tweaked to add a second firewire port. However... even if that is a scart and not a DVI port, there are too many things lacking on this device. Where's the anti-theft jack? Where are the cooling vents? Why is the name printed in big stupid letters on top? Why would you put a headphones jack on the BACK of the machine? What kind of media center doesn't have an eject button on the front, never mind all the other auxillary controls? Is that a power button on the front? Where's the infrared receiver for a remote? Aren't SCART ports inadequate for today's TVs and the diversity of interface options available, to say nothing of the lack of 5.1 sound?

Too many issues for me.

Looks really fishy. Seriously. Doesn't "Media Centre" look fake? Almost as if someone pasted the words on? And does any camera take that craptastic of pictures anymore?

That and has Apple ever actually put the product name on the product before? Well other then the iPod?

I just want to know why all the recent spy pics are in an elevator?

What is it with Apple keeping 'secret' products in elevators? Don't you think they would learn?

Duff-Man says....As soon as I saw the first pic and saw that it was in an elevator I knew it had to be fake...I mean really, that was so "last year" - and it is probably the same goofball trying the same stunt again this year....oh yeah!

Its so f***ing fake!!!

Oh please! Apple would never slap the name of a product right on top like that, and the apple logo just sitting awkwardly on the front planel like it. Nice try. I just love the days before Macworld, where online are littered all these ridiculous "real" images of products that never will come to be.

HAHAHHHAHAA :D

quality hoax.

at first glance i think anyone would be hard pressed to say it was a fake.

but give it 5min and the crumpled edges. misaligned photos.
distinctly ibook-like box.

:D

Actually, the new iMac has iMac in big letters on the back (I know you know this). I think it looks ugly, but Apple could do it again. However, this does indeed look fake. Good fake though.

The Real Clue

Look "The dot" over your iPod or iBook or iMac, is rounded, vs "The Squared Dot" at iHome box.

Conclusion it's fake.

fake...same person who faked images before.

If i remember correctly, there was a "spy" pic that came out before a show maybe a year ago of the new Apple LCD or iMac or something. It was a pic of a product box taken in an elevator exactly like this one appears to be. Anyone else remember that pic? Person later said they used a ViewSonic monitor and edited the pic.

somone got a link to that image?

It's a FAKE

Hi everyone, new here.

I had a look at these photos and agree that the "product" looks fake.

  • The printing on the box itself has a lot of photos and screen-caps that I've never seen on other Apple packaging. Way too cluttered.
  • iHome printed next to the handle is also unusual for Apple packaging, not to mention the ugly way those four small screen-caps appear all on the left side, leaving the right side totally empty. Good fake mockup, but, that's not Apple design.
  • The styrofoam packaging doesn't fit properly and looks sloppy.
  • The biggest giveaway is the "computer" itself. It is clearly a cardboard box with white pieces of paper pasted to it, sloppily too. Just look at those corners and banged-up edges. They did a decent job trying to mock the packaging, but, the computer mockup is very poor.
  • Listen carefully to the sound in the video. When he's removing the film from the device, it sounds like it's brushing against an empty coardboard box!

It's a FAKE!

Oh, and forgot to mention, besides the non-American spelling of "Centre," that typeface is not the same Myriad Apple uses on it's packaging. As someone pointed out, the dot over the i should be round, not square, but the "M" and the "a' in Media Centre are also not quite right.

Well, surprisingly, my first inpression is that this is real, but there are 2 things that make me feel stand offish.

1. Centre not center, I know this is how it is spelled in UK and other places im sure, but i don't buy it.

2. Looks like the same elevator of the famed Aluminum 23".

Pretty convincing since they open up the box and show it off.

i dont know if any of you are big on the apple disscussions boards but i am.

on the ipod/bmw commercial i think i remember somthing that read "centre" and that it rose i big commotion about a "misspelling" but thats just how it was supposed to be....so i wouldnt worry about the name.

i would worry about how there isnt any apple logos on the "icentres" box, that is the only thing i think is fishy!

This fooled me for a coupla minutes - I was genuinely excited goddamnit!!!

I'm once again disturbed by SOME of the newbies posting on this thread... for example whoever that guy was posting about ihome.com... hmmm...

Hob - iNewbie Watch :D

And here's another one...
10) The packaging doesn't hold the unit. In transit it would bounce all over the place. Any hardware I've ever received is slotted into foam which suspends it centrally in the box to maximize protection.
