Ok look, I've been with Apple products for over 17 years and I am 95% sure of my self that this is indeed real, and this is what will be the new so called $500 Mac. First off, for those of you who say this is fake because of some marks on the box or lettering, I must remind you that this is not a very clear image, its blurry, and there isnt a very light source in the room. I have a couple of reasons why I think this is real product. Well one, it fits the previous description of size in a past rumor, which stated it will be Xserve size. I think it fits that. Second, it doesnt matter if iHome is written big on the front. ITs not part of the computer, its headless, you won't be paying attnetion to it. Third, look at the box. You can clearly see its giving steps for using iTunes and iPhoto. Now may we recall the targeting campaign of this mac? To switch over Windows users, to a virus-free, easy, affordable computer. Show them the ease of iTunes and iPhoto, iLife, and iWork. As for Media Centre, I believe we are going to hear about why it is a Media Centre. Perhaps it is an unreported feature, that it will be based souley on iLife to make it 'easy'? Who knows, only 4 days left. :)

I agree. I've been with Apple since I was a little kid, which makes it almost 16 years now. I'm really looking forward to the Expo. We'll soon find out how much of this is true.

I think the best argument I've heard for it being fake is that the whole packaging is upside down when you carry it by its handle. That is a marketing sin that Apple would never allow.

And are Apple really going to introduce a computer called a Home rather than a Mac? That I find really hard to believe.

I don't care if it is fake

This is the type of product I want Apple to make! The only reason I would consider buying a $499 iMac mini is so I can hook it up to the TV and watch mov and avi files with it.

The box is un-Apple like. Yeah, its got the products name and a photo of the product like the iBook and iMac boxes, but those screenshots/photos/whatever they are on the box make the packaging very un-Apple. Also, on the 3rd pic, you can clearly see that the iHome is not centered horizontally on the box. If it were a real Apple product, considering how nice Apple's packaging is, I bet the iHome would be centered perfectly to the nanometer. And why in the hell is the cover on the slot-loading drive a rainbow color?

Also, with the cheap Mac rumors being so detailed, I have a feeling that if the cheap Mac was in fact a media center type thing, that also would have leaked out.

No I can't. Where?

Actually, looking closely, I notice that the picture ON the box doesn't really match what comes OUT OF the box.

I call shennanigans.

mind if i quote you on this? ...17 years...*scribble* ...sn: black... *scribble*..."apple experience"...we'll see about that in 4 days..

a c- average junior high student has more logic than this. (like me) Lets get this started:

this is news to me... did anyone else know that bad image quality and lighting switches the last two letters of certian words and make the packaging not fit the product?

You can clearly see its giving steps for using iTunes and iPhoto. Now may we recall the targeting campaign of this mac? To switch over Windows users, to a virus-free, easy, affordable computer. Show them the ease of iTunes and iPhoto, iLife, and iWork.
how long did it take u to figure that out? of course it is giving steps for itunes and iphoto, because they were too lazy to write thier own info..you don't see the imac with that kind of advertising on its box, do you? or come to think of it, any apple product? you are perfectly welcome to think that apple will stoop to a windows tactic like that, but apple is miles above of that. it is like advertising ichat on the box for the isight... do they? no would they? never

btw.. i wouldn't be surprised if one of you ppl who says they think its true actually did it, and they try to promote it..

we will know if apple legal steps in..

just like the older powerbooks had the apple logo upside down when you had the laptop open ;)

one has to wonder, what do these hoax people get out of this? maybe it's just 21st century crop circles?

wrong design of package

apple design of package would be some thing like ipod, imac, powermac etc which have actual size of things in there, without the little image of iturns, iphoto screenshot.

So this fake for sure!!!

The vent grille looks odd, even for a camera phone.

I suspect a new headless Mac will turn up at MWSF, but it won't be exactly like this fake.

Another thing that I dont think anyone's mentioned.

Where's all the stuff that comes with it. At the very least, it would come with a power brick, and there doesn't seem to be a spot for it. And it would also come with a keyboard and mouse, at least I would hope, again, no sign of them. No VGA/DVI/RCA dongles, because somethings always included with Macs to connect a monitor. And all the Macs I've purchased came with a phone cord for the poor souls on dial up, not in the pic either. And if this is indeed a media center for your TV, a remote control of some sort would probably be included, and you would think that if this was real and there was a remote, they would make sure to get photos of that. Also, I dont know about any other Macs, but both my G5 and G3 iBook packaging had a cardboard with a photo of the G5/iBook that sat on top of everything and was the first thing you saw when you opened the box; not in the photos either

its 2 ibooks poorly taped together. damnit, i got excited for a second. is that the same elevator from the last expos spy pics, or were those from the paris show?

Okay - I'm voting Fake (i've been cynical ever since iWalk, of anything that is accompanied by video)

However - I want to believe ;)

I will say this ----- the argument of a lack of RCA inputs does not make sense to me, because a device like iHome would not likely have RCA inputs, rather, it would have some kind of other input, like USB to S-Video, or Firewire to Video, etc ------ and in that way, it would come with a special cable to hook up to the TV

The iHome box looks pretty real ----- the gloss is truly there - and the ports definitely look real....... if it is fake, then I don't know how they got away with putting that thing together........

The production design is not very convincing though....... its just hard to believe that someone leaves an iHome lying around to be opened up, and maybe even, stolen.........

I recall that the G5 Desktop casing was revealed in photos real early on, and part of the reason why it was so easy to believe was because the pics were taken in a factory, and not a hospital's hallway

but Apple hasn't sued over this yet - so that adds fire to the fake column

either way....... I kinda feel stupid for writing so much about this........ someone is laughing, indeed......

Merry MacWorld everyone!!!!

Wow -

This forum is full of crack investigators!

When I first saw the video - I was mildly curious. But upon closer inspection - you guys are right. This is crap-ola. You guys make CSI's Horacio look like cheif Wiggum. "Nice work boys."

ahh and to think i was just about to mention the iwalk.. now that was cool..

The packaging doesn't have a single Apple Logo on it or the Apple name.

The people in the photos on the packaging are doing nothing that relates to using a media centre. You'd expect them to be watching a DVD, using a digital camera/video cam.

And all the photos only have individuals (and adults at that) in them. Wouldn't a media centre be for the whole family at home?

Also the top of the box is inconsistent with the rest in that 1) it only says "iHome" and 2) The "iHome" should be above the handle so that "Media Centre" would be below.

I think it's got a mini-jack on the back to the right, like on the iPod Photo

The only thing that really conviences me that it is mostly fake is the video. When he holds it, I imagine how I hold my ibook. It is heavy, I pick it up and my wrist is slightly tilted downwards for the weight. I don't see any sign of him having to use muscles in the wrist to pick it up, and the thing is twice the size of my iBook and has to be at leat 15 lb.

Look again. He's resting the back half of it on the edge of the box. He doesn't take it fully out of the packaging. If you rested your iBook on something, you probably could easily hold it the way this thing is being held.

Not saying that these pics are legit, but your point is not a valid one.

what if its not the final packaging

The text and image on the front of the box are horribly off-center. Methinks Apple would be more careful.

having worked with mock ups for photo gigs, it does look like a mock up....but the question is, is it a real mock up for a real device or just fake all the way around? Do you guys follow my line of thinking here....

Old Powerbooks?

Although I agree that this is probably a fake (but a fantastic fake anyway - kudos to whoever faked it), don't you remember the Black G3 PowerBooks where you open the lid and the apple logo is then upside down!?? That was so crap, but they abviously designed it with the thought in mind that when the lid is closed, people will have the logo looking at them the rightway up. Same with this iHome - when you are about to open the box, the iHome text will be facing you.

The box could be a fake to hide the real deal inside. I could see Apple covering the real boxes with fake labels to throw all of us off.
