Pages will export as HTML, although God knows what the actual code it produces looks like. Given .Mac, I'm not sure if Apple has an interest in producing a stand-alone web design app that doesn't force people to use that service.

I'm thinking Pages 2 (I have high hopes for January 2006 already, lol) will play this feature up more and have specific webpage templates that will have one-click integration with a revamped .mac

I see a lot of PO'd people who ordered this and have no DVD drive to install.

Check the requirements listed at the Apple Store -- it says "DVD drive required for install (CD version available separately)". Presumably, you can order it on CDs.

Requirements form iWork page:

iWork System Requirements
Macintosh computer with 500MHz or faster PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 (G4 for PowerBook); G4 or G5 recommended
128MB of RAM (512MB recommended)
8MB of video memory (32MB recommended)
Mac OS X v10.3.6 or later
QuickTime 6.5 or later
iLife ’04 or later recommended
1GB of available disk space
DVD drive required to install applications

I'm glad you figured out a way you can get around it. Yeah, I posted earlier on in this thread that I was surprised it was DVD-only, but I'm glad to hear from Tulse that CDs are also available. They definitely need to make that a lot more prominent, or at least also include a mention in the apple.com/iwork description that a CD version available, not just a note on the Apple Store.

I bet there will be other people who order it only to find out they need a DVD drive and that they were supposed to request a CD version. I wonder what it means that a CD version is available separately anyway: I doubt Apple will send out a CD version free to people who already had the DVD shipped, and I didn't see a CD option when I ordered iWork...

also, how compatible is Keynote with PowerPoint? I mean, do all the fancy transitions and effects you can do in Keynote also work when you open or display the presentation in PowerPoint?

no. those transitions are lost when the keynote presentation is transferred to powerpoint.

actually, if you open any presentation (made with keynote or powerpoint) in powerpoint, you will only be able to use those transitions implemented in powerpoint, so it's not an issue of keynote compatibility in my opinion, but that's because powerpoint has no idea what transitions keynote is talking about. so it's the powerpoint which is stupid, not keynote.

you can however save the keynote presentation as quicktime movie and then your fancy effects are rendered into it, i believe.

Apple says deliver by Jan 22nd. Do you guys think that means they will start shipping tomorrow?

God I hope so.

I really can't wait to play with iLife and iWork. It'll keep me distracted from buying a Mac mini I don't really need. ;)

ordered, soon to use..

Bottom line... MS Word is suited literally to a few words (try a 2 pager with 20 logos on a "fat" PC with lots of memory and hard-disk- a total no-go).

Both Word and Powerpoint have compatibility problems with all prior versions.

Anything that can migrate files (even with 50% error rate) is better than bloated expensive MS-malware.

My copy is ordered and looking forward to the day- MS-free...

I'm thinking about switching.
I'm a very long time pc user.
If I decide to switch, I do not want to use MS Office, Internet Explorer, etc.
I hope Apple comes out with a package that's Apple Works and iWork combined.
This way I won't have any reason to use any MS products.

MS Office for Mac is developed by secret mac programmers in Redmond headquarters. It is better than the PC version. Use that until Apple has some of their own apps developed. Pages looks simple and easy to use. Keynote2 looks to make quite the splash.

i can clearly see why you want to not use idiot explorer, but there's just no sane reason not to use excel, because it's a microsoft product. it's a great app and if you need a good spreadsheet app just use excel and be done with it.

in fact excel is so great i might buy the standalone 2004-version to replace my office v.X and just to make my point ;)

Excel always was user-friendly, but lacking for the spreadsheet power-user. Borland Quattro, Lotus 1-2-3 clearly superior but nowadays maybe accountants are not so power-oriented....

Engineers use MatLab anyhow... (or Maple if your needs are limited).

Looks like an awesome upgrade and I only really use iPhoto but have begun to dabble with iDVD. Question is, do I buy it or just get a Mac mini? .

I agree, why buy if we're about to buy minis that include it.

But an important question: will iLife install on more than a single machine?

I have a G5, a PB, and my daughter's iMac in the house. When my G5 arrived the iLife disk was missing (it was a refurb from the apple store) and I was not able to install iLife from my iMac software. Something about different versions for each hardware model. Almost all software lets you install on several home machines, at least on a desktop and a laptop. With the missing disk, it wasn't a big issue because they sent me a replacement. But i'm reluctant to have to buy three copies of $79 software. Anybody know the answer?

You can buy a family pack (good for up to 5 computers in the same household) for $99. I don't know about different versions for G4 vs. G5. I've never seen this issue, since we have all G4 machines. Personally, I'd call the Apple store and ask.

Yes, you would be better off to purchase the family pack for $99. Apple just makes one version of the software, at installation it determines what kind of machine that you have. Then it will install the proper items. Some companies allow installation on a desktop and laptop. Microsoft is one for sure. I had a problem installing Office on two of our machines, kept saying that I could only install once. So I called Microsoft and the IT person assisted in making the needed corrections. Apple only allows you a license to install on one CPU. So they offer the family pack at a reasonable price.

Just got a notification that my copy of iWork 05 shipped today. I got overnight delivery, so hoperfully I will get to play around with it tomorrow.

Expect a review tomorrow if it does come.

P.S. The odd thing is that I order iLife 05 in the same order and it is not shipping. Apple loves to torture me. But of course, this is nothing like the pain of waiting for the D2.5.

Excellent news, looking forward to your review. Hopefully my copy will not be too far behind...

iLife installation

It's been my experience that off the shelf copies of Appleworks, iLife, OS X (which are not currently serialized) will install on multiple machines. (It works on the 2 Macs that I own).

I have 3 macs here at home so do I have to buy a copy of iLife and iWork for each of them or can I just buy 1 copy and install on all 3 macs. Does anyone know if apple is like microsoft in this regard. thanks for the info.

Apple offers an iLife family Pack which is good for 5 installations. It looks like you will have to buy individual iWork licenses, though.
