WirelessVideoOutput?...<double-take>

I already sent this in as a piece of "news"...

I'm not sure how often Apple names a plugin within an app something that would certainly get as much attention as this:

/Applications/iDVD.app/Contents/PlugIns/WirelessVideoOutput.oxygene

Anyone but me find that kinda...well....foretelling? I mean, I'm not making this up, it's right there for everyone with iDVD 5 to see. Just right-click on iDVD 5 and go to "Show Package Contents" (I believe you have to have Dev Tools installed).

I'm not saying I have any idea what the heck this plugin is intended to do...or even why it's in iDVD of all apps. I just think the name is kind of ...well, you decide.

As for iLife, it sure is lucky that I've got DVD SP 3, otherwise I wouldn't be able to produce any useful DVDs with iDVD. This isn't a critique, my DVD player is just older and finnicky. Since there's no 16:9 menus within or supported by iDVD, if you use a 16:9 video track the player will have to switch from the 4:3 menu to a 16:9 track. iDVD does this in such a way that makes my player freak out and not play the 16:9 track at all -- DVD SP produces discs that play fine in my player. Anyway, it's a player problem because most everyone else on all the boards I've seen say that their DVDs play fine, and I know from past experience that my player is ver picky about what it likes. But just beware if you've got an older and known-to-be-picky player...you could have problems with 16:9.

iMovie, for me is a huge upgrade over v4. Love it, the new features and tweaked interface.

I suspect that iPhoto is the sleeper that everyone will love. Didn't see it coming, but it is fantastic. IMO the most improved app.

Pages is so-so. Good for really really basic stuff, but NOT A WORD KILLER. Get it out of your heads, people. It's a Word "alternative" or "supplement".

Keynote 2 is great.

Next Saturday (29th), or maybe it's Friday. Next weekend anyway.

What is the reason for the one week delay overseas? It would seem to make sense for the release to be worldwide. Hope they don't do this with Tiger.

Hi Jakemikey, thanks for the info.

iDVD v4 has the same WirelessVideoOutput. No idea why.

Pity about iDVD not doing widescreens. There are many DVD players that take the initial screen resolution during startup as the default throughout the DVD. They shouldn't do it, but they do.

I'm really annoyed that iDVD doesn't support 16:9 menus. I was excited that iMovie HD was updated to support 16:9 because my DV camcorder has a 16:9 function and I have a widescreen rear projection TV. I'll probably still upgrade anyways, but why would they add a major feature in iMovie without a corresponding feature in iDVD? Oversights like that really torque me.

Where is "navigator" drawer in Pages?

Just got iWork and have been working on a few projects. Here are some first thoughts:

Pages:
A little disappointed here. The idea of a word processor/design layout hybrid is intriguing, but not novel. There are some really strong, user-friendly options in Pages--but by-and-large the current release seems pre-mature as either a word-processor or as a design layout editor. Most frustrating is the lack of a "navigator drawer" like Keynote has. The page drawer would allow you to see all pages at a glance and--more importantly--reorder the pages on-the-fly. Currently working on a project feels static with regard to layout and order. I can't believe that this was overlooked by Apple--it seems like a very obvious interface need that was addressed in Keynote. Even MS Word has this ability. Maybe I just haven't ound this feature yet--if so, please let me know.
That being said, the program seems strong, stable, and user extensible via templates. Also, fast: I imported a novel-length document in less than a second. I just hope they address the GUI shortcomings in future updates.
**1/2 out of ****

Keynote2:
By and far the better of the two programs; not so surprising as this is the second release. Improvement highlights:
--more transition effects (at object level inside the slide's page)
--animated text
--Presenter View (i.e. notes, multiple page view on presenter's notebook view and not on screen)
--hyperlinks (sorely missing in version 1)
--instant web page snapshot & link importing
-seems to simply run faster now
**** out of ****

The only reason I can think of is a syncronised launch with the Mac mini which is not available or shipping outside of the US till this coming weekend either. In the past OS launches have been on the same date...

16:9 menus aren't fully supported in DVD Studio Pro either. You have to go to some pretty expensive DVD suites to get that level of functionality.

Hope that Tiger will ship at the same time because when that comes out I think I want it FAST :p

...? Have you used DVD Studio Pro recently? I make 16:9 menus with it all the time. I don't know what you mean by them not being fully supported, because they are.

Damn right. The Panther fiasco in the UK (indeed, the whole of Europe) was the most frustrating computer-related experience ever. Alright, maybe not quite as bad as watching the Wintel power-block (with the assistance of the Tory Gov't!) deliberately destroy Acorn, but if you had to wait a couple of weeks for your pre-ordered Panther, while your college break ticked away AND saw Panther for sale in your local resellers, you'd know what I mean.

Rant over!

My friend has a basic 12" ibook and an external dual layer Lacie burner.

Does iLife 05' iDvd actually allow burning to an external drive now?

Is the other solution to create an image on her HDD and then use Toast to copy it to the external drive...?

Keynote question

(Didn't read the whole thread, please don't kill me if it's been answered before)

Is there a way to make pictures do effects that don't involve building in or out? For example, I want the picture on the top of the screen to move itself to the bottom, then spin or something. Is that possible?

No, it still doesn't support burning to an external drive/non-SuperDrive

Yes, that's the only solution I know of.

Pages

Just got mine yesterday and I'm very impressed. It loaded without a hitch, imported my old Word docs. I like it. As a matter of fact, I like it a whole lot better than Appleworks and, especially, M$ Word.
I haven't made a presentation yet, but Keynote will blow Powerpoint away.

If iDVD can make disk images, can't you use Apple's Disk Utility to burn them instead of a third-party app like Toast?

Good Question, I was thinking the same thing, however I'm not sure if you can burn to an external drive using Disk Utility.

extending clips

After you add the transition - double click the first or last part (the image) and extend its time and click the update button. Voila - longer clip - sametransition. Works for imaages should work for other clips as well. It may have to rerender the effect but it works.

Hope this helps with some of your frustration

:)

iMovie is very frustrating to use. I can never extended a clip after I have applied a transition. It seems so cumbersome, even if it were meant to be easy to use. I hate iMovie, as for coming from FCP, this program allows me to do almost anything I could think of.

Only iTunes, iDVD and iPhoto in the iLife suite are worth anything. They really need to overhaul iMovie.

So if a disk image is burnt to an external drive of an iDvd project with Toast, will it then work just as if it had been burnt to disk...? I assume so...

iDVD 5 does now in fact allow you to burn to an external DVD burner. Previously you could do this by using the "easter egg" in iDVD 4, but this is not needed in iDVD 5.

Actually, you don't even need Toast...just use Disk Utility.

iPhoto 5

Had to say it - iPhoto 5 is freaking *amazing*

Just installed the iLife '05 DVD, and I'm blown away -- I honestly don't have much use for GarageBand, though it seems like a neat toy. And, believe it or not, I've never used iMovie or iDVD much either - though the new iDVD might change this.

But I've been using iPhoto since 3.0, and the latest is the best ever! Totally worth the upgrade... :D

I just repaired permissions on the hard drive and the disk. I wrote down the message this time not sure if it'll help you help me......"The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it."

Hi all...i have just installed IPhoto 5.

I'm working with multiple libraries (using IPhoto Buddy to switch).

I imported all libraries yesterday without any problems.

But today when i switch to a library, i get the same error message: "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it.". The second library is still working!

I did the rebuild permission procedure, and i checked if everything is OK with the library permissions, i even compared the tow libraries' permissions.

And it's looking good!

Any solutions for this problem?

Thank you!
