More people are angry with Apple than a few years ago, and that's great. Apples wasted the last year gleefully profit taking while Google rocketed ahead with it's release of KitKat. Now panicked the rumor is Apple may release a 5.7" Phablet ahead of their normal release cycle. Even if it's not possible for various reasons, just the intent to do so is very revealing of Apples position.

This just proves that complacency and minor "upgrades" don't cut it.

Needing to defend myself. OK - "double the memory footprint" is an offhand overstatement, but there is an increase, and depending on the app, significant.

Is it the cause of the issue? - let's look at the evidence:
- Crashes from LowMemory errors
- A definite increase in the memory footprint of apps recompiled for 64 bit
- An already low memory limit set by Apple to keep costs down.

When you're already dealing with little or no excess capacity (pre 64 bit days) then, all else remaining equal, putting a further constraint on those resources becomes a major problem.

So Apple has two options
- more memory (iPad Mini Retina 2?)
- better memory management to reduce the effect (I'm sure they're working on it)

I quite agree with you.
I'm sure we are going to see an increase in the ram in next iDevices, but situation is not so dramatic.
In a Galaxy S4 (2Gb) you have about 780 Mb of free ram, on my iPhone 5S I have about 520 Mb. iOS 7 is much more optimized, since Apple is doing hardware and software.

The only app causing a lot of trouble for me is Safari.
Apple recompiled all the apps in 64 bit, but I'm not experiencing problems with Mail, iPhoto, iMessage or any other.
It's Safari.
And iOS 7 memory manager is not very efficient in releasing unused ram when you close apps in background.

So, I agree with you in the need for more memory in the future, BUT I think Apple could improve the actual situation very much via software.
Otherwise why I can use mercury browser without crashes and tabs reloading like I'm doing right now ?

Ahahah .... and all of this "brilliant" analysis based on what ? A rumor without any confirmation ? A poll in this forum ?
Ahead of their normal release cycle .... says who ? You ?
What "intent" are you speaking about ? Did someone at Apple speak about that BS ?

I'm sure they are really "panicking" after the iPhone 5S "fiasco" ..... oooopsss, the best selling iPhone ever :D

I am not angry with Apple, but I am sure disappointed. The new iPad Air does not feel like a $500 device, it feels flimsy and when you try to be it in the corners ever so slightly it feels like it is going to snap.

This is the first time I have not been impressed with an Apple iPad product.

No offence but what relevance does that have to Crashing safari and continuous reloading of tabs? If you were unhappy with the tablet because of that, fair enough. I know I'll soon see how I feel about this and how bad the problem is when mine arrives on Wednesday, but if your iPad feels that flimsy you should probably return/replace it.

When I tried it at the store it felt perfectly fine and well built to me.

It all depends on the usage. If you tend to open multiple tabs and leave them open, then switch to a different app (even worse if that app is a game), and then try to switch back, then Safari will most probably refresh the tabs. Depending on what you want to do this can be really frustrating. Imagine wanting to copy information from 1Password, and then paste it on a text box in a website. If Safari refreshes that specific tab, then you might lose whatever you have been doing before.
It is certainly not the greatest experience.
Steve Jobs said in his first iPad keynote, that people want a device that does specific tasks, in a great way, and that Internet surfing is one of them. I have to say that Safari on iOS is far from perfect, and not because the frequent refreshing, or because of the crashes..It's because many sites do not work as well as on desktop browsers. Drop down menus not working is really common, Flash content not rendering (I hate to say that but there are still a lot of flash sites on the Internet), and and and...the list grows bigger and bigger.
For casual browsing Safari is great. If you want anything more than that, then have a look at a real computer, running a desktop OS. Whenever I have the chance to use a desktop OS, I take it and forget that I have an iPad, despite its flexibility, directness and unique interactivity.

Yes, can anyone chime in on beta3? Also how is it for crashes on other browsers?

I find the useless, "swipe left to go back" feature in Safari annoying as hell. Just using this forum on iOS 7 on an iPhone 5 to post a reply is a chore.

Pages refreshing every time you switch tabs IS annoying and makes a lot of uses for ANY web browser absolutely impossible. I can't see why anyone would even bother justifying to themselves, then trying to "convert" others that this somehow isn't a problem and doesn't effect them in any way.

Well for me certain sites on b2 still crashed my iPad but not many, but on beta 3 it's crash free
https://www.livingsocial.com/cities/1165-arlington-alexandria/food-deals that would crash every time on b2 but no more so hopefully it's sorted

I spoke too soon the third time I clicked that link safari crashed lol

Thanks for the update. Better might be good enough for me. It wouldn't bother me if Safari crashed once a week. However multiple times a day is way to frequent for my liking.

I'm assuming this has been fixed in the latest 7.1 betas?

If that's the case, I'll continue to use Mercury Browser in the meantime until 7.1 is officially released.

Did your original thread on this exact subject not get enough steam? I guess not.

Here is the deal. Based on the threads you have created the iPad Air is not a device for you. I am not discounting problems at all. I am discounting your elevated stress levels resulting from an electronic device. This very device is one that you do not need to own. In fact, no one needs an iPad. The iPad was brought to consumers and I believe it was not until we saw tablets that we all figured they would fit into our lives at some point.

It is indeed terrible if the iPad Air, or any iPad, is incapable of having 3-5 tabs open at once without having to reload the page each time. The frustration you feel where you're typing a message on a board and it reloads because you left that tab for another and came back, is indeed aggravating. I am unsure if I felt the elevated stress levels that you seem to feel. You post as if you're borderline postal about it.

But then there is this…

You are part of your own problem and your eventual demise. This goes for just about anything you can possibly face in life. Deciding, before you even try, to contact the manufacturer of a device to discuss the issues you are having would result in failure is a failure on your own part.

You need to return the iPad. You need to understand as quickly as possible that starting a thread and demanding that Apple fix something ASAP is pointless. The time spent here posting about this issue demanding it be fixed is wasted. You need to tell the only people who can fix this issue and instead, you're here, starting thread after thread.

Again, my immediate recommendation is to get rid of the iPad. If something so utterly insignificant will cause you this amount of stress then this is the device you need to stay away from. Spend a bit more and get a MacBook Air. Hugely portable and a machine that won't reload tabs. I've owned one of the earlier revisions and I can attest to the handling.

tl;dr (which is my guess always)
Relax, return the iPad, it is not that important of a device that you need to make yourself insane over it.

One can probably disable the auto refresh feature of the inactive tabs.

Go to Settings
Tap on “Safari” from the list of applications
Tap on “Open New Tabs in Background”
Tap “OFF” option

A year later...:p

The tabs reload issue is still present on iPad Air 2 with 2 GB RAM. But it's much less pronounced.

So we can conclude that it was a mix of hardware and software problem.

My Windows 8.1 with Chrome open with 4-5 tabs goes to maximum of 1.9 GB used RAM. So this 2 GB iPad must clearly be better if we consider better optimisations by Apple. But it will still reload tabs and refresh apps.

What a shame. Does that mean that we'll have to wait 3 more years to get 4 GB of RAM and a decent-working device?
