Before Apple showed off the Apple Watch I was looking for a new timepiece. I'd worn wristwatches since first grade, but my latest had been stolen a few years prior - a nice Polar exercise watch with an orange rubber casing and armband which I forgot to put in my locker at the gym - and some damned blaggard went and took it.
I typically preferred Casio G-Shocks at the time, since they tend to have some heft to them (the first one I owned was the original, with the stainless steel casing which I originally got sometime in the early/first half of the 1980s IIRC), but at the time none of the models available piqued my interest. And the rubber band of my original G-Shock had rotted (apparently it wasn't made out of silicone but some other material susceptible to the ravages of time), plus the mineral glass crystal had previously cracked during a summer vacation on Crete sometime around 1991 as well. Alas! Such is life.
Then adding to my first world frustrations, Apple would most likely go the route of automatically setting time/date (they did), and having to adjust for drift every so often manually plus daylight savings time and so on did not enthuse me either; smartphones and modern computer OSes had spoiled me from that perspective. So I took a peek at a Seiko Kinetic GPS watch that kept correct time automatically. It was a beautiful timepiece; nice design and materials, incredible engineering, recharged itself from your hand movements and so on, but DAMN, it was super expensive for my income level. Probably cost US$2000 and possibly even more.
So I had to knock that idea out of my head.
Then Apple Watch finally launched, and I realized no "dumbwatch" could ever do it for me again. Plus, Apple craftmanship really is on a wholly different level compared to any other watch I've ever owned - the precision and build quality is quite exceptional. Most watchbands especially look very crummy compared to Apple's offerings. The only thing that really irks me is that the watch is glued shut rather than put together with screws; that's something I would like to see changed in a future version.
So, TL: DR. Sorry about that. Or not really I suppose. Story of my life.
