One think i've noticed is that if you ask for a replacement normal sized sim the gold contact area is much smaller, which makes cutting it very easy. My contract t mobile sim was like your o2 one, but when a replacement one came it was much smaller.

So you would think!!

As it is a smaller contact area you cannot use a micro sim as a template as the contacts are in different places. I cut around a micro sim, put it in the iphone 4 sim tray only to find that the contacts were 1/4 covered on the one size. Had to cut more off the one side and jam it in the opposite side. Think i'll get a replacement micro sim when T-mobile get their asses in gear

Ring t mobile up for a replacement standard sim and you will be able to cut it fine. Thats what I did this morning and had no issues.

T Mobile are useless so I planned to cut my sim card. Had some T Mobile PAYG ones to try it out on. The issue I had was my contract t mobile simcard was 2 years old and had a large contact area compared to the newer simcards. So it wasn't as straight forward compared to the PAYG ones which have a smaller contact area.

But its been successfully cut and is working fine with my iphone 4 :)

Got my iphone 4 yday after queuing in line at Apple for 6 hrs. (Yes I had a reservation)

A few ciders later and i have hacked my t-mobile sim card down to a micro one. Its not the best cut put it works perfectly.

I'm on an old monthly rolling contract and the Gold contact parts of the sim were bigger but had seen some articles on which parts of the contacts you could trim off without damaging the sim.

Happy days

I trimmed my ATT microsim...

When I purchased my iPhone 4 yesterday I wanted to use a discount from another line. They activated it in store with that number. As soon as I got home I called ATT to transfer the number. Thy said no prob but when they found I had the microsim activated on another number they told me I would have to buy a new microsim. That's $24.99! So I just overlaid the old aim to match up the metal contact "plate" and marked around and trimmed with a sharp pair of scissors. It worked perfectly fine! Now I have to go into an ATT store to have the new iphone plan removed from that other line and deactivate the original phone that was on the line to begin with. I'm bopping they don't give me any grief just because I found a work around their $24.99 charge!

Hi guys
I'm on Orange UK and got iPhone 4 ytd morning (ordered online from App store)
Ytd I cut two of my PAYG SIMs (O2 and Orange)
They looked pretty perfect but when I put each into iPhone 4, it still could not SEE/DETECT any SIM.

Now I have only one 'contract' SIM from Orange (which I am using mainly). I really dare not to cut it again.

(However I went to Apple shop asking the guy there to activate my iPhone so that I can use it as media player/camera now)

Any idea mates? thanks.

I have a sim cutter I bought online
works perfectly
Happy to cut sims for people

I went around the t-mobile a few days ago to ask for a micro sim, they told me to ring customer services and request one - the idiot on customer services didn't know what a micro sim was, I had to explain how the iPhone 4 used a smaller sized SIM card, and he told me they're the same and I should try inserting my SIM into it

So today my iP4 arrived, and with no SIM that had unlimited texts and data, I simply cut mine down a bit with a knife and mallet, then sanded down the sides until they were smooth and just the right size.

Now got T-mobile iP4, with unlimited data and texts for topping up £10/month, allowing me to keep the £10 for calls (which I rarley make). :)

I cut my AT&T sim card down and sadly it doesn't work now. :(

Do you think it was because I cut into the three metal contacts on the bottom of the card? The microSIM that I have from Rogers doesn't seem to have the top or bottom contacts...

Also I'm a bit confused about the adapter.. if you have to cut a regular SIM down to make it small to fit in iphone then whats point of adapter making it longer again?
That's so you can take the micro-SIM and use it in another phone that takes regular mini-SIMs. For instance, if your iPhone isn't working and you need to borrow someone else's non-iPhone.

I was reading somewhere that they were charging £10 for this. Is this true?
I called up my provider, Fido in Canada, and they were charging $10 to send out a micro-SIM for me to put in my unlockjed iPhone. Fortunately, I had sufficient "Fidodollars" (promotional credits) that I could pay for the micro-SIM that way, and it didn't cost me anything. I can then switch the activation to the new SIM on Fido's website ( the "my account" section.

T-Mobile UK are charging £10 for micro sims but i called up customers services and bitched and now they are gonna give it back from next months bill.

A word of advice for those that cut down your own sim, if you are using one of the sims that has a big metal part on it then it could cause a massive battery drain on the iphone.

I replaced my iphone 4 5 times cos of bad battery only to find out that it was my sim that was causing the problem.

As soon as i started using a proper micro sim the battery life improved greatly.

I rang orange
Requested micro sim (contract )
Arrived 2 days later
I rang to activate sim
It was done instantly
I was amazed !
How easy was that !
