When did he say he was going to the 101st? I thought 13B Cannon Crew Member was to service and operate field artillery.

From what I searched up on Google, you have an NCO down to the bottom, one man sites and the rest load and fire the round.

Sorry if I missed something though (about the Airborne).

Yeah he said airborne not air assault, so that would be the 82nd over the 101st.

Congrats future Gun Bunny. Don't let Sill get you down too much. I did Basic and AIT there.

My unit was King Battery, Tiger Squadron, 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment. They are now on their third deployment to Iraq.

BIG GUNS!

So is a B52. So is White Phosphorus. So is napalm. Your rant is irrelevant.
It wasn't irrelevant, you just didn't get the point.

Good luck and congrats for joining. Ever since I was a kid I always have this urge in the back of my head to join the Air Force like my grandfather did in WWII. I applaud you for acting on your desires, and enjoy!

Correct me if I'm wrong, I mean I've only been the military for 20 years and everything, but I'm pretty sure the B-52 is an aircraft. In and of itself, it is not a WMD by the UN definition. It might carry WMD payloads, but it is just an airframe. How old are you anyway? You sound like a preteen who knows everything.

You must be psychic: you have described me to a T. I am, like totally pwned.

I just didn't see where he said airborne, I saw B13 but I didn't see airborne. Must've been late when I read this heh...

Please, let those who want to talk about the military and congratulate the OP on their recruitment, let them have their space...

This isn't the thread for bickering or politics. Sometimes, it's just best to leave a thread alone.

My little brother is a Green Beret. He entered the Army as an 18X - signed up directly into SF training. Out of 300 something guys that entered the program, he was 1 of 12 to graduate in August after 28 months of training. He made it into 5th Group, made it onto an A-Team(529DA), and is now in Baghdad with his team. He made one foray into the Middle East with his team before Iraq, but he won't(can't) say where.

I'm sure I don't have to tell you this, but make sure you stay aware of OPSEC...be careful about what you post.

To OP: Don't quit before Basic is over. When I in-processed we had a greater than 25% attrition rate before our indoc period even ended (keep in mind I'm in training for the next 4 years - we'e down to 50% of our initial size by now). You don't have a very good feel for the service when you're in Basic, so just go with the flow and tough it out. You're going to wonder why the hell you did this to yourself, how you're going to make it through, and it's going to be very tempting to quit - believe me, I know. Don't let yourself down!

well if his brother has done his training right that poster should not know anything that could get him in trouble.
A lot of SF come home and when their wives ask them "how was your day?"
They answer "I can't tell you it is classified."

Also part of SF training is being trained how to keep stuff classified and what answers to keep the person from getting more curios and wanting to know more.

... Hopefully the Army is as good to you as the Air Force is to me. Somehow I've ended up with a wife and kid out of it :D

Wow, those are some fringe benefits. :p Do they mention those in the recruiting brochures? :D

I have very mixed feelings about the military and our (US) various engagements around the world, but I will say this: When I was quite pregnant, I needed help with two big suitcases as I tried to get on a bus at a busy European airport. Everyone could see that I wasn't coping, but the only one who did anything at all was a young American marine. He jumped down off the bus, got my two heavy bags on in about 3 seconds, smiled, and said, "There you go, ma'am". I was blown away, his manners and service-mindedness are with me today. :)

I know it's hard for a lot of people to think that the US Military is not composed of baby-killers... We're just normal people who want to kill as many terrorists as we can. :)

Or people who just want to mooch of the free benisfits and pay. I've been in 6 years and never been deployed, gotta love permanent profiles.

Where are you two stationed right now? I'm on the Naval Station in Norfolk until July. That's when I get one of the greatest documents known to Man: a DD-214. :)

Not too far away from you: Seymour Johnson AFB. Congrats on the many years of service.

Thanks. The Navy has done me in, let me tell you. I walk with a cane because my knees are jacked up. I have to get a hearing aid next month. I just got diagnosed with sleep apnea (sp?). I get migraines very much badly and I think I have carpal tunnel now. And I think I have arthritis in my hands and knees.

Stationed on two aircraft carriers, plus being TAD (or TDY for you non Navy dudes) to another carrier, three amphibious assault ships, one cruiser, and four submarines. Steel decks are tough!

What do you do in the Air Force? And isn't Seymour in Florida, or is that the one in Myrtle Beach? I know the name.

Good god man! Take the retiree check and kick back for a while!

Airfield Management. Fun job at times. I put the chair in Chair Force :D I'd explain what I do, but folks just don't have all day to read such a long list ;)

Seymour is located in NC.

They never did to me . . . ;)

That's a great story, and I think it illustrates what the vast majority of military people are like.

What's interesting/funny/sad is that very rarely do you hear negative stories about an individual member of the military, but many people seem to have a less-than-stellar opinion of the military as a whole. Similar to asking people about Congress--most people despise Congress as a whole, but think their representative and senators are just wonderful.

Good god man! Take the retiree check and kick back for a while!

Seconded! You're in worse shape than my friends who stayed in the infantry!

Stories like that put an instant, genuine smile on my face, and make me so proud. Thanks for sharing that. :)

。。。

I agree with the second half of your statement, but not the first. The US military is generally not "chomping at the bit" to get into a war, and with civilian control the military is subject to the whims of our political "leadership." So please don't confuse the messenger with the sender.
。。。

I wasn't confusing anything, just saying something about myself in a VERY general way as a backdrop to my (positive) story, not as an issue for discussion. This thread is about the OP's excitement about his enlistment, not a place for me to share my personal opinions. ;)

My pleasure. My experience that day is still with me, almost 17 years later. I only wish I'd thanked him a bit more profusely.
