im sure steve will make one for just you then....coz i dont see a whole lot of others following you my friend...

My comment was in response to the droves of people stating "facts" like "it'll never happen because no one would ever use it"....Well...I would, so that kind of shoots that theory down.

I'm still very surprised at the level of anger that this front facing camera has the ability to bring out. Some of you really seem to be taking this personally. Did your girlfriends recently leave you for a front facing camera or something? Lighten up...

It can. Jailbreak your iPhone and you can use video recording applications. I'm sure a third party developer is already in the works of a video recording app that'll be ready for the app store in no time.

Really? Thats awesome...that feature and no picture messaging has been the only things I hate about the iPhone.

Also why would apple not include video recording? honestly, it makes no sense. If there is some reason I dont see I'd love to know. Also the reasoning for not recieving pic msgs.

why would you need a video of their reaction if you're talking to them on the phone, or instant messaging them?
Have you ever looked into somebody's eyes and told them you loved them?

I have, and the reaction did a lot more for me than;

":)"

You really should be saying that in person. And I think that greyish blob's (over the slow ATT network) expression would have looked much nicer using a webcam over skype.

You're not getting my point are you?

So when traveling I shouldn't tell somebody thousands of miles away I love them, because I'm not able to in person?

Yes, sure, there's always a better technology, but we're talking about the merits of having a front facing camera on an iPhone in this thread.

If I'm traveling light the iPhone could handle all my email(just)/movie/music/internet(at a stretch)/phone/text(just) needs... but if I want to iChat/video chat I'd still need to take a MacBook, at which point the benefits of an iPhone disappear and I'm better off carrying my MacBook and current 3year old Nokia.

Apple have done what they're great at, produced a great looking, trendy, hyped product, that is just good enough to not be a success. It could easily be much, much better; a product of somebody truly trying to do their best, but instead they hold back to sell us that product next year... nearly.

I think you are missing the point. If you NEED a front facing camera on your phone then get one. As for the argument that if your phone doesn't have a front facing camera then you should bring a macbook that really doesn't make sense. If you can't get by without your macbook because you need a front facing camera then that's too bad, but if you're saying that you need it because it's a feature that the iPhone lacks then you will always need a macbook. There are thousands of things that an iPhone can't do that a macbook can.

Is your next thing going to be that the iPhone needs garageband capabilities? Or maybe you need to be able to rip a DVD using your iPhone...

This is sizing up to be a good one, right next to bigfoot, 9/11, JFK, and Nessie. But we'll know soon enough.

Guaranteed Gizmodo and others will rip one open once they release it.

...If you NEED a front facing camera on your phone then get one...
The discussion in this thread is about the merits of a FFC on the iPhone, it's not about NEED, and I'm well aware that many other mobile phone lead the iPhone in this area, but again that's not what we're talking about here.

...As for the argument that if your phone doesn't have a front facing camera then you should bring a macbook that really doesn't make sense...
 The argument was that without a FFC on your phone you'll need to bring a MacBook(or other notebook) to video chat; what doesn't make sense with that?

...if you're saying that you need it because it's a feature that the iPhone lacks then you will always need a macbook. There are thousands of things that an iPhone can't do that a macbook can...
Correct there are lots of things that the iPhone can't do that a MacBook can, but the only one we're talking about in this thread is video calling, why start mudding the waters with garageband etc.; is it because you're running out of valid argument?

Nobody NEEDS an iPhone, or any phone, video or otherwise, but that doesn't mean there isn't a case for having the option of video calling.

The iPhone is a good product, but for versatility and features it's beaten by older fully featured smartphones like the SE P1i and my personal favourite the Nokia E90.

Why do you care?!?!?!?!

The front facing camera isn't a deal breaker. It is a feature I WANT. Not NEED. Should I go around flaming people into the ground because they want SMS? Just because I am not going to use it, doesn't mean that it shouldn't be in the iPhone.

Please go find a different topic to flame.

I cannot believe how many people would be disappointed if a front facing camera were announced for the iPhone.

It's not that anyone would be disappointed (and no one would be), people are simply stating what Apple's reasoning probably was for no front facing camera.

And it's just idiotic to think that there would be a front facing camera in the next iteration of the iPhone and have apple not announce it when they announced the phone.

Its not idiotic for them to throw in a front facing camera. For all we know, the one showed at WWDC could have been a prototype.

Look at it like this:

iPhone 3G is announced. Hype is going crazy, everybody wants an iPhone. As it gets closer to release, people lose interest and look into other options for phones. July 10th, Apple announces a front facing camera in the iPhone. Hype spikes back to original hype. Everybody and their brother run to the store to impulsively buy a new iPhone.

From June 9th, to July 11th is 32 days. Thats a long time for Apple. A lot hype could be lost by then. Apple's famous "one more thing" could keep the hype high.

My two cents.

That may work with people who hang around macrumors and read about the iPhone everyday, but imagine if apple did that with each product.

A new feature is announced every few weeks. Well? Is it the same product? When am I supposed to buy one then? Wait-- is there more than one iPhone, one with a camera and one without? Well google shows me pictures of an iPhone without a camera and a few pictures of one with a camera. What one can I afford?

It would just get confusing, and the 'hype' would be anticlimactic.

Apple has never done this and there is zero evidence that they will.

They did do it with YouTube on the original iPhone. Albeit that was a software feature, but that could have let to similar concerns to those you mention.

I think holding onto that feature had more to do with the lack of flash on the iPhone and the announcement of the close partnership between apple and google.

I didn't say after they released the iPhone they would throw in a camera. Apple has never done that. What Apple has done is add software/hardware just before a release. With the original iPhone, they added the YouTube app, and changed the glass of the iPhone.

Why do you pick this topic to flame?!?!?!

alright I will say there is a possibility that you might be right.

But on July 11, if no front facing camera is announced I'd appreciate a formal apology. I'll do the same if that camera does come true.

I agree with mpw - a FFC would be areal advantage for me and the very reason I could travel without a macbook. Skype and iChat are ideal for iPhone, especially if iChat becomes windows app too. (rumoured). But I can understand if it is not supported if it clashes with phone providers own plans for video calling.

The idea of a pre-launch upgrade to the spec is curious. Has anyone actually had a iPhone 3G to review in detail? Has anyone seen photos other than the standard apple.com site photos? If not, why not? Maybe the thousands of boxes waiting now in warehouses contain a phone that is slightly different to those seen (but not demoed) at the WWDC announcement.

An apology for what?!?!?!?! For getting my hopes up?

I'm not proving you wrong. I never said they will be a front facing camera. All I did was give a picture with evidense of a front facing camera.

Though, I would like an apology for all your flaming.

Holy S*** guys. give it up.

Whats wrong with getting our hopes up for Front Camera. Isn't this site about rumors, facts and little bit of hope.

I'm sure we will start to see "What I wish for in Ver. 3 iPhone" shortly after the release of V2.
