Macs should have the ability to at least read Blu-Rays, though I'll agree that it is unlikely that we'll see them in the Mac anytime soon. This is why I'm holding off on buying a higher-end iMac to succeed my current and am instead going with a 15" MacBook Pro and a Mac mini Server (used as a normal Mac and not a server).

As for the i7 iMac, buy it as soon as you can as if you wait any while longer, it'll make more sense to hold off until the next rev.

Nice choice on you're Macs, but why would you need so many anyway?
And I was about to buy it next week but I guess I can handle with my Intel Celeron 1.5Gb ram and an Intel Graphics Accelerator. I'm switching to Mac. I'm tired of this unoptimised OS and viruses(Windows XP user, Windows 7 too expensive)

Yeah, the next iPad and the much-controversial MacBook Pro refresh are likely candidates for an Apple unveiling next month.

True, but if they are updating the MBP's why not update the iMacs along with it? :p I don't see why updating them at the same time would be a problem.

One more thing, the Mac Expos are happening January 27-29. Might be the release of the new MBP's and/or iPads?
If I sound like I don't know what I'm saying, I don't. :p idk what they call those Apple announcements Steve Jobs does.

Well, the Mac mini Server is replacing the Early 2006 iMac, which will probably be put into storage because I'm stupid and sentimental like that. The MacBook Pro is both replacing another MacBook, but it will function as my primary computer while the mini Server will function as the place where I use a Mac when I'm at a desk and store all of the video projects. Frankly, I'd be fine with having my only Mac be the MacBook Pro, but I need more storage and I'm not big on docking laptops to desktop monitors for some silly reason.

Hold off if it's a MacBook Pro. Buy now, otherwise hold off if it's an iMac as we are mid-cycle on that. You don't always know with the Mac mini, and it's a safe bet that the MacBook will probably follow soon after the MacBook Pro, if not be updated at the same time (in which case, that'll probably be when Apple either kills the 13" MacBook Pro or merges it with the white MacBook to form something newish).

They sometimes do that, but never just for the sake of doing it. I think the last iMac refresh was poorly timed, but I feel the same about the one before it as both generations were put out RIGHT BEFORE the successor to the ATI cards that went into them were released, but it's unusual of Apple to update something mid-cycle.

Not since Apple pulled out of Macworld Expo at the end of Macworld Expo 2009.

It's cool, man. Follow this stuff for a while and you start to pick up on the patterns and the outliers.

I'm probably going to be interested in the MBPs later after 2 refreshes(Since I don't really need the portability right now). But right now my main goal is to get the Ultimate computer that I'll use through out my school years(I'm going to do some serious video and audio editing since i am a bit of a musician). So I think waiting just one more refresh will be worth it. Of course if they add something like Sandy Bridge or an ATI HD 6xxx 1gb. Maybe even a retina display?

It's mid cycle now, but in 2 months it'll be due. :p So maybe, just maybe February. :D

 That sucks.

It's funny, I still keep on trying to figure a scenario where the mini server isn't needed, but for my needs, I can't eliminate it. It does seem a tad ridiculous on paper (and on bank account statement).

All throughout college my main computer has always been an iMac (first a FlowerPower Early 2001 iMac inherited from a friend and then the Early 2006 Core Duo iMac that I'm now replacing). Frankly, my next computer would also be an iMac were I not going to be doing a lot of traveling during the next computer cycle (3-5 years), and were I not (probably fruitlessly) waiting for USB 3.0 and Blu-Ray to come to the iMac. After this next set-up, I'll probably do an iMac, and really, if your in school and you actually do things with your computer, it's a fantastic machine. The worst of all of Apple's computer lines to service, but a wonderful machine nonetheless. Sandy Bridge, from everything I've since read, is worth waiting for. It apparently makes current Core i3/i5/i7 chips look like the Core 2 Duo does to those current chips. The next Radeon cards are also worth waiting for. Though like I said, if you need an iMac now, there isn't much time left before it makes more sense to just wait for the next refresh.

More than two months. Nice try though. :p Two months from now, it'll be either MacBook time, MacBook Pro time, or both. Either way, it'll definitely also be iPad time.

The new Macbook Pros will probably be externally the same with 4 different screen sizes, probably 11", 13", 15", and 17", and I don't know much about the iMac except that there will probably be a touchscreen. (go to google images, search imac touchscreen 2011) it might be fake but maybe not.

Why are we no hearing any rumors about the new upgrade for MacBook pro ??? There are other company already showing their new update with the sandy bridge processor. We consumer who are looking forward to see an update for the MacBook pro 13" we will like to know when would be possible to hear anything about an upcoming update in February 2011. We shouldn't have to wait until July fir an update while others already getting ahead with the 2nd generation upgrade

Digitimes claims that in addition to a new iPad revision, Apple is also planning on upgrading both the MacBook Pro and iMac in the first half of 2011.
The sources noted that Apple plans to launch at least four upgraded MacBook Pros as well as an iMac that features a new panel size and a price point for the mainstream market.
The Macbook Pro was last updated in April of 2010, so a first-half 2011 revision seems likely. Digitimes' sources believe that four new MacBook Pro models will arrive at that time.

Meanwhile, the iMac was more recently updated in July 2010, and the new claims describe a "new panel size" and "price point".

Yeah why do you need a mini anyway? Can't you just get external storage? Or is it for someplace else where you don't have a computer to use around in..?

Okay many thanks. :D
And I don't really need one right now, it's just that all that time i've been saving, i got a little impatient. But I guess I can handle a few extra months, especially when Sandy Bridge and the next ATI's are worth waiting for. :p

Touchscreen? I hope not. Throwing my arms around in an attempt to edit one video is just foolish. Especially in a 27" version(maybe 30" next update). :D

The iMac isn't getting a touchscreen. Period. Apple has even stated as much. I'm extremely skeptical of an 11" MacBook Pro as there's barely enough room in the 13" Pro today to fit the guts to make that thing worthy of the name "MacBook Pro" (or at least to put it in the same ballpark as its two larger siblings). Given that, I'm even skeptical we'll even see another 13" MacBook Pro, especially if it is going to be having Intel graphics.

There was this rumor (i.e. the one you are commenting on), and all of the NVIDIA/Intel rumors, not to mention Cnet's claim that the 15" and 17" MacBook Pros might be using AMD GPUs instead of NVIDIA's (as they had been for the last three years).

I wouldn't be shocked if the 13" MacBook Pro disappeared altogether. Apple is not going to give that machine what it needs in both the CPU and GPU departments enough to satisfy the customers of that machine that need it.

I wanted a Mac to do stuff with at the desk. Also, I'm not getting my MacBook Pro for at least six months. I could've done without it for that time, but then I wouldn't be a Mac user. ;)

Okay many thanks. :D

Well, knowing Apple, they won't adopt the Radeon HD 6 series until the Radeon HD 7 series is on the verge of release.

Damn. A man can dream though.

:p

I hope this update comes within the next month or so. We are looking to purchase both an iMac and a MBP within that time frame.

Again, I wouldn't hold my breath on the iMac update; we're still mid-cycle. So either buy right now, or wait. MacBook Pro on the other hand is likely in the next month or two.

New to This

I am planning to buy an imac this year ... I can't wait to see what apple will offer this year in imacs ...

It's going to be major life achievement for me. My Apple journey began with 1st gen ipod Nano and as my financial situation improved, I got my hands on the iphone 4 last year and finally I am taking the big step up and ready to purchase my 1st imac this year . woo hoo

I hope they make 16gb ram cheaper .. i want 16gb ..also will we see sandy bridge imacs in the Q1 2011 launch?

I would like to see an major upgrade on the isight camera ... make it a proper hd camera that is > 5mpx atleast .... more usb ports ......... blu-ray not necessary

I am so excited .. i keep watching these imac unboxing videos all day on youtube ... really excited to join to macforums as well .... :)

I have read almost the whole topic and I wonder how people can be so certain that the MBP 13" will dissapear. Style, class and exclusiveness is still something that Apple customers are searching for in my opinion. I am a student myself in Holland, and since my dell laptop is coming to his end I was planning to buy a macbook pro 13" actually. Fortunatelly I did my research first and I am seeing the new release date will come within a few months and therefore I don't hope the 13" will be seen as redundant and dismissed from manufacturing. I think, as for me, the 15" MBP is too expensive for a lot of people and since the 13" screen is sufficient for most of them, they switch to the 13" MBP. And most of those people (I have talked to a couple in my environment), just as myself, give a big preference for the aluminium case, even though it doesn't justify the price difference.
Apple is, compared to not Apple, fast anyway, and I think really most of the apple users aren't buying an Apple laptop (well at least here in Holland), to be able to do video editting and whatever else, and especially because the potential of Apple computers is much higher than Not Apple, even though the CPU's are outdated, it doesn't actually matter. I could even buy a 2010 MBP 13" and easily work with it for 5 years, and maybe I will have to do that if most of you guys will be right, but I really doubt that Apple will stop producing the 13" MBP, especially for European market.

The VAIO Z would be the ultimate in style, class & exclusiveness IMO...

I doubt the 13" MBP will dissapear. But I am certain one of the 13" mac notebooks will go, if not the Air, then likely the white MB. If they keep the white unibody macbook and the air, (and if only 4 models of MBP remain if we are to believe the rumour) than either the 17" or 13" could go. There will probably always be 2 versions of the 15".

New iMacs....

Ok,

So what are the alternatives for next iMac release?
Anyone who follows the Intel pipeline? I guess it will be pretty minor anyway...

But as far as I can see, the current Core i3 iMacs, seems to be faster than at least the Core i5 CPUs on the MacBook Pro-line.

I just hope they decide to change the backlighting technology, so we can finally get evenly lit (both colour and brightness) displays....

What I would expect in the iMac would be the i5 2500. It's not acceptable to put in anything lower, especially when you consider how cheap and ridiculously powerful the i5 2500 is.

If Apple opt for the i3 and make the i5 2500 an optional extra, then they are mugging people off.

I checked out that CPU at Intels website. Apparently it draws 95W and cost $205.
Compare that to the current Core i3 540, that cost $117 and draws only 73W.
I believe it's unrealistic to hope for a CPU that might be both too warm and costly for Apple to consider.

Also, the Core i5 2500 is quad core. I find it unlikely that this functionality will feature in the cheapest iMacs.

Link: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=52209

Correction: I found a Core™ i5-2500S that only draws 65W. So wattage might not be an issue.

Right. The low-end iMac will start with a dual-core cpu, but i would like better cpu options for the other models, especially when all already offer (good) dedicated gpus.

$1199 dual-core i3 21.5" iMac, 3.10GHz Core i3-2100 ($117), ATI HD 5570/512
BTO option: 3.30GHz Core i3-2120 ($138) - desktop i3 cpus will be available Feb. 20, i5/i7 quads are already available

$1499 quad-core i5 21.5" iMac, 2.50GHz Core i5-2400S ($195), ATI HD 5670 or better
BTO option: 2.70GHz Core i5-2500S ($215)

$1699 quad-core i5 27" iMac, 3.10GHz Core i5-2400 ($184), ATI HD 5670 or better
BTO option: 3.30GHz Core i5-2500 ($205)

$1999 quad-core i7 27" iMac, 3.40GHz Core i7-2600 ($294), ATI HD 5750 or better

Video in and optional 128/256GB SSD blades on all models would be nice too.
