Weird that we'd be getting an iMac upgrade before the MacBook upgrade. I was expecting a simultaneous MB and MBP event sometime in January, and an iMac/Mac mini event in the spring.

At any rate, I'll be very curious to see how Apple clears out the $999 price point and the 13" screen size (both of which are awfully crowded right now).

And I'll be curious to see if an when Apple adds HDMI-in and HDCP to the iMac so I can finally use it as a TV.

What foresight! Geeee...posting a comment that rumors a belief that maybe a new lineup of computers will come sometime in the next 7 months.

Wow.

What a crystal ball.

Regarding iMac - new panel size - hopefully they'll bring back 24", or something close to this size. I cannot really fit 27" in my bedroom.

The four MBP models slated for next year sound very interesting.

I am guessing that they will be as follows:
  • 13" (SB, Intel graphics?)
  • Low-end 15" (Intel graphics or low-end discrete)
  • High-end 15" (dual GPU - Intel + mid-range discrete, hopefully AMD)
  • 17" (same as high 15")
I was hoping that the 13" gets killed in the next update to make way for the MBA, and that two of the models (one 15", one 17") had noticeably better specs (such as quad-core CPUs, improved GPUs, IPS and/or RGBLED displays, etc.) than their base units.

But knowing Apple and the notorious popularity of 13" MBPs....

I have a 15" early 08 MBP, and if I were to buy again I'd go for the 13" (preferably if it got a 1440x900 resolution)! It's got nothing to do with price, but the perfect size of the 13". 15" is borderline to big for my taste (sometimes a hassle to carry in bags/backpacks), the 17" is a monster.

This.

I've eyed the 13" air but it isn't powerful enough.

I want a 13" workhorse with the 1440x900 screen. Drop the optical drive as well, offer external for those that need it. make sure it has dedicated graphics and a good processor, more battery. If this drops apple gets my money (again), if not I wait some more unless a new 15" is really really appealing-I just don't see that though, it just gets to be too bulky to carry around unless i really need it.

I've used many 15" since the titanium days for both personal and work. The 15" has grown over the years, my old 15" ti book is about the size of my wife's 13" unibody anyway.

Same here, I'd like to upgrade my 20" but the 27" might be too much. I'd also like to see it get a bit thinner as they are starting to look a little bit chunky compared to some of the other Macs.

2.2 I agree the plastic MacBook will be discontinued.

You white macbook-killers are going to be gravely disappointed when it doesn't die and continues it's legacy as being Apple's #1 selling laptop.

Mainly because it's butt-ugly white. Can't see the MBP 13" filling its shoes unless they issue a can of spray paint with it.

The timing is not a surprise... H1 is quite big timeframe, 1/2 of the year i.e. 6 months. New iMac with new form factor sounds more interesting, maybe the 21.5" will be bumped to 22-24"

Another wish list vote for Blu-ray. I'm not willing to let it die. ^_^

If someone else can tell me where I can get lossless audio and 1080p video with high bit rates besides Blu-ray (that is legal) I'm all ears.

Until then, as a loyal customer of Apple (just spent another 3,400 bucks this past week) this will continue to be a source of contention for me.

I was thinking the same thing. A better article could probably have been written using common sense and the buyer's guide as a... well... guide.

I hope Apple discontinue the 13" and 17" Macbook Pros.
Why?
Well, since the 13" MB and 13" MBP are pretty much the same (apart from case design and prices) they might as well discontinue one of them.
We don't really need 3x13" laptops. 2 is fine (1 portable, 1 performance)
It's possible apple could implement a 1920x1200/1080 15.4" panel into their 15" MBP, leaving the heavier/bulkier 17" redundant. It's just a possibility, since apple are moving onto higher res (higher density) displays.
Here's what I think...

11.6" MBA @ 1366x768 and i3 (late 2011 refresh)
13" MBA @ 1440x900 and i3 (late 2011 refresh)
13" MB @1440x900 and i5 (early 2011 refresh)
15" MBP @ 1680x1050/1920x1200 option and i7 quad? (early 2011 refresh)

What I would love is if they bump up the displays a little more.

11.6" @ 1440x900
13" @ 1680x1050
15" @ 1920x1200

I'm probably just dreaming though. Also, this could be a problem for some with poor vision. I'm still waiting for resolution independency too. ;)

I like the thought of higher density 15" displays on the laptops. When the 17" was released it was gigantic. Today, if you want portable you can get it in a MacBook Air. If you want big you can get it in a 30" Cinema Display. I think the 17" has seen its day and portable users who what a HUGE screen should invest in the 30" or 27" display to connect for a bigger display. Buy, my guess would be Apple will continue to sell them until they see the sales drop below their expectations. If people buy the 17" then there's obviously demand for it.

In other news :

Android will release 2.3 next year and phone manufacturers may get around to releasing updates at some point in 2011 to their current android 1.6 releases.

Really?? I along with others have wasted too much time on this "story" from the department of the bleeding obvious! (aka no **** Sherlock dept)

Second me for Blu-Ray. I need it, want it.

Sadly i have been stretching out my use of my old MBP, i also need to buy an imac or other type of desktop.

I will not buy any computer that cannot do Blu-Ray and even an HDMI output for laptop.

Willing to give up Mac for BD. though hoping they finally come with new computers capable of Blu-Ray. if not, i go back PC. Apple has been sitting on this good new tech i want to be able to use.

What's the point of blu ray on a computer? I mean, I love blu ray on my 42 inch.. but honestly... 720p rips from the internet look fine on a computer.

I just bought a new 'family' iMac (27", dual core) a month ago, and find myself just fine with the idea of an update coming soon.
The fact is that unless OS X 10.10 (Garfield) has some absolutely to-die-for features that require the neural-synapse based processor that will no doubt be in that year's iMac, I don't see needing a new desktop machine for a REALLY long time.
My next several purchases over the next few years will probably be in the iPhone/iPad group as my family gravitates rapidly towards occasional desktop heavy lifting and 95% mobile usage. We're pretty much at 80% mobile usage (or more) now.
The only thing I see happening is that I'll replace my hard drive on the iMac with SSD when it becomes affordable.

13"? For USD899? That would translate to about NOK 8500 in Apple-tax. One would have to have severely impaired cerebral function to buy a 13" desktop at that price. (If it wasn't an i7 with HDMI/DVI, then the screen size wouldn't matter) :p

Are you off the wall?

It isn't the size so much as what is in that frame. The resolution is the key. Besides that point, if you think $899 for a 13" is crazy, all iMacs must seem insane to you. People pay $829 for an iPAD!...an iPad with LESS resolution, LESS screen size, LESS storage, LESS computing power, LESS connections, LESS everything aside from a greater portability. People pay $1000 for a MacMini without a screen!....

Get some perspective.

2 Cameras

It has been said, by an 'Apple Insider' that the new Mac's will have two cameras--just like the iPhone.

This does make sense, however. It would be great for business people who webcam a lot during their job and for meetings.

Actually 10.10 is code named Hobbes. I have it from an inside source.

What I'm hoping for is a 13" MBP with the same resolution as the new 13 MBA, 1440x900 16:10 aspect, and PLEASE make an antiglare option.

I refuse to buy the glass mirror, I have one in the bathroom than you very much. I can't stand the reflections.

Oh and an i3/i5 would be nice in the 13" MBP. If these things come true I'm buying one right away, my original 13" Black Macbook is 4.5 years old and really showing its age.
