The sources noted that Apple plans to launch at least four upgraded MacBook Pros as well as an iMac that features a new panel size and a price point for the mainstream market.

Wow. What an amount of information!

Here are some more rumors, at least as substantiated as the one above.

Apple plans to launch a new iPad and iPod Touch next year.

Intel plans to launch a new CPU next year.

According to insiders, Volkswagen is going to ship new cars next year.

Or how about that: There will be tablets that are going to compete with the iPad over the prize AND technical specifications. They will be running Android 2.3 (and later releases), they will support -tada!- FLASH! and Java, will have cameras and don't need to be jailbroken to do anything useful with them.

...And my sources say that Apple will update the iPhone sometime in 2011!

The mainstream market?

Is £999/$1199 not a mainstream price? Comparing the iMac against machines with similar spec it seems pretty fair to me, that coupled with the fact it will outlive a PC, retain more of it's resale value and cost less to run...

You read it here first guys; Apple will release something in 2011. That is correct - Apple will release SOMETHING in 2011. I fully expect attribution on the front page of MacRumors for this stellar announcement.

OMG!!! Amazing new rumour! You won't believe this!

I have it on very good authority that Apple plans to upgrade its entire line hardware, probably more than once over the course of the next twenty years!

Tough to believe I know, but you heard it here first guys. You're welcome.

In other news:
The sun is expected rise tomorrow. Analysts are giving buy ratings on many solar panel manufacturers on news that the sun is expected to shine on our planet for several consecutive hours starting in the morning.

Do Digitimes actually pay people to write this ******?

A lower price iMac would be great. The cheapest in the UK now is £999 I reckon something at £849 would sell in huge numbers, especially to people with an iPad and no need for a laptop anymore.

OS X doesn't do blu-ray, at least not without too much of a hassle for it to be worth it.

As for your earlier post about optical being archaic, I can see where you're coming from, however, blu-ray is a sight to be seen on a reasonably large screen. But that does make it slightly less useful on a computer, so I really can't argue that it doesn't need to be put in computers.

Apple don't put bluray on their mac because movies downloads on itunes. Yes optical drives are old technology. But is the better way to see and distribute high definition movies. if any body can't can see the difference of DVD and a Bluray in laptop is better to go to doctor and see whats wrong with the eyes.

But think the way apple think optical drives are old technology, mouse is old technology and the keyboard too. Apple should sell the mac without keyboard and mouse and optical drives..

I hope Apple discontinue the 13" and 17" Macbook Pros.
Why?
Well, since the 13" MB and 13" MBP are pretty much the same (apart from case design and prices) they might as well discontinue one of them.
We don't really need 3x13" laptops. 2 is fine (1 portable, 1 performance)
It's possible apple could implement a 1920x1200/1080 15.4" panel into their 15" MBP, leaving the heavier/bulkier 17" redundant. It's just a possibility, since apple are moving onto higher res (higher density) displays.
Here's what I think...

11.6" MBA @ 1366x768 and i3 (late 2011 refresh)
13" MBA @ 1440x900 and i3 (late 2011 refresh)
13" MB @1440x900 and i5 (early 2011 refresh)
15" MBP @ 1680x1050/1920x1200 option and i7 quad? (early 2011 refresh)

What I would love is if they bump up the displays a little more.

11.6" @ 1440x900
13" @ 1680x1050
15" @ 1920x1200

I'm probably just dreaming though. Also, this could be a problem for some with poor vision. I'm still waiting for resolution independency too. ;)

The problem with the 1 performance, 1 portability statement is this: I had a 15 MBP 2.66 with 8GB of RAM for nearly two years. My new 13" MBA kicks its a** in everything I do. From working in documents, to running iLife apps, to VMWare Fusion. Just starting Windows in VMWare Fusion on my MBP was a large investment in time. And rarely did I leave it running longer than absolutely necessary, since it killed performance on the Mac side, as well as being dog slow in Windows. Not so on the Air. Win7 starts fast, runs fast, and doesn't affect my Mac work one bit. It's running all the time, now.

I think that if you want a hint about where the MacBook line may be going you should take another look at the MBA commercial...

Absolutely agree with those that think the main focus of these updates will be a transition to Sandy Bridge. I really doubt we'll see anything more than that, as this is a fairly major update and will include new GPUs. Any other major upgrades aside from this would probably be too cost prohibitive if they planned on maintaining their current price points.

Looks like my late 2006 iMac will finally get its funeral in 2011! It's been a bumpy ride over the past year, but the roadmaps for 2011 look so promising so I bet I'll be glad that I waited.

I hope they get rid of the uni-body design, its a fag when a key gets snapped off and you have to fork out £400 to get it replaced cause they have to gut the computer to get to the hole. Its also really un comfy to type on and the trackpads are annoying.

My thoughts exactly :D

MR perhaps realised that they are getting so boooooooooring with all the iDevice nonsensical news so they thought - frek! we better post something about Macs too - so they did... New Macs next year :)

Now they can go back to iCrap baba less and less people care about...

I wonder if the iMac screen issue will be resolved that affects nearly every iMac.

It's been nothing but a year of headaches dealing with it until finally getting a replacement model last month.

The sources noted that Apple plans to launch ... an iMac that features a new panel size and a price point for the mainstream market.

...huh? Can someone put this into plain language?

"MAINSTREAM MARKET" is what? Lower price point consumers? This is an insane label without quantifying.

On the assumption it is a cheaper iMac, it must be under $1000 ($999, basically). I wouldn't be surprised if they make a trimmed screen of 15" or so with possible retina display or some jacked up resolution which is 1900x1000. There's a definite market for a smaller machine if the price is right.

While a 1600x900 screen isn't particularly appetizing, I could see some tiny 13" model with everything stripped down, crammed in, and selling for $899. While the iMac's connections are nice, it could do away with half the USBs and the Firewire, possibly the mini Display port as well, and a smaller portable drive can be jammed in there for space saving and cost.

I myself like the 13" MBP with a faster processor, 10 hours battery life, space for 8 GB RAM and a 1 TB hard drive, for a lot less money than the 13" MBA. The price difference can be justified for people who want a very very light weight laptop that they carry around everywhere; it cannot be justified for me.

I have a 27" Dell monitor with a 1920 x 1200 retina display."Retina display" means: You can't see pixels at normal viewing distance. Well, I can't see pixels at normal viewing distance on that screen.

13"? For USD899? That would translate to about NOK 8500 in Apple-tax. One would have to have severely impaired cerebral function to buy a 13" desktop at that price. (If it wasn't an i7 with HDMI/DVI, then the screen size wouldn't matter) :p

Digitimes claims that in addition to a new iPad revision, Apple is also planning on upgrading both the MacBook Pro and iMac in the first half of 2011.The Macbook Pro was last updated in April of 2010, so a first-half 2011 revision seems likely. Digitimes' sources believe that four new MacBook Pro models will arrive at that time.

Steve Jobs said the MacBook Air represents the future of notebook computers:

Maybe* the 13" MBP goes away (Maybe the White MacBook goes away as well so we are left with one 13" Notebook) and then we are left with 15" and 17" both available with two sizes of Flash Storage, like the MacBook Air (Their are 4 of them to choose from) The New MacBook will not be as thin so they will not be called "Air" but they will still have power so they will still be called "Pro"

The Notebook computer line will be a bit cleaner at that point: 11" and 13" Air and 15" and 17" Pro. The next version of the 13" (and maybe 11") will get a boost in power to bring it closer to the 13" MacBook and 13" MacBook Pro that it replaced.

* This is from my inside source
