no iBook mention...

Sadly, the TS report makes no mention of an iBook update. :(

I am happy for those playing the waiting game on eMacs and iMacs though! Hopefully we awaiting iBook updates will also be able to take part in the fun soon.

I can't imagine Apple having almost it's entire line Core Image compatible(via the GPU...), and letting Tiger come roaring out of the gate with the two most popular consumer machines lagging behind with 32mb of vram for who knows how long. Especially as these are the machines most switchers are likely to look at first(I know people switching are also least likely to need Core Image-GPU functionality, but I'm reaching for any rational I can.) :D

TS and eMac

I sure hope these folks are wrong this time. For me at least, a small speed bump in the processor and a new OS won't be enough to move me to buy. Maybe, by chance, PLEASE Mr. Apple, the 1.42 gHz processor is really a G5 rather than a G4??? I'd buy today...

whoa! i'm liking the sound of the "soon to be updated" emac with the Superdrive. Thanks guys for your input. Yeh like i said, ive waited this long so i'm going to wait that little bit longer. The current emac even with a free tiger upgrade etc wont mean much to me as it really makes no difference to a new Mac buyer with no computer knowledge. For me it is about getting the latest and the greatest for a reasonable price and not feeling like ive been ripped off....whoa ho ho! i'm excited!! :)

Well it could be...I recall some rumor about new guts but same shell for the eMac. G5 would fit the bill for this rumor. Expect something silly like only 1 ram slot to keep it below the iMac.

Really wish they would cheap 15" the emac and bring out a iMac mini ;)

G5 eMac???

I agree with you, but even if they reduce the RAM slots to one, I'd buy it. For me, the big changes of meaning are the G5 chip (front bus speed, more processing power) and the Tiger OS. Say a small Mac-type prayer!

The amount of VRAM does not determine whether a GPU is fully Core Image / Core Video ready. It's the GPU itself which determines it. An ATI Radeon 9000 with 128MB VRAM (which you can buy today) is not CI/CV ready. The rev. B 12" PowerBooks had a nVidia FX5200 Go GPU with 32MB VRAM. Those rev. B 12" PowerBooks are CI/CV ready, whereas (by way of comparison) the rev.A 17" PowerBooks with their 64MB VRAM GPUs (nVidia GeForce4 440 Go) are not CI/CV ready.

Anyhow I agree with you that it'll be better if the entire Apple line, at least at a minimal level on the lower tier products, is capable of the awesomeness that is CI/CV (without having to scale to the CPU).

What about the ibook price?

So, we're looking forward to a new ibook in probably a few months but what about the price? Is it likely that the new ibook will have a similiar price as the one in stores now?

iMacs shipping times

All iMacs shipping times have changed from "Same business day" to 5-7 days on the Apple Store (USA).

Powermacs still 3-5 for the duals.

Holding my breath...for iMac.

This happened within last 4 hours

iBooks are in the update channel also, same day>1-3 days.

[update] Mac minis must also be in the update channel, same day>1-3 days.

I don't think Mac minis will be updated. Apple just starts shipping minis with Tiger preinstalled beginning next week.

Please... please... please... Apple...

...increase the basic ram in the iBook.

I will be first in line. :)

No, please don't.. in the 12 inch Powerbook line they upgraded to 512MB, and now you are either forced to buy the memory upgrade from apple or to throw away the 256MB bar that blocks the 2nd slot :( Apple RAM is much more pricey than for example Crucial RAM...

Simple solution for that problem: solder a 512 MB chip to the main board instead of a 256 MB chip. The single RAM slot is then left open for you to upgrade.

I hope Apple isn't too cheap to do this eventually - hopefully on the next update.

If they upgrade the RAM in the iBooks, they will just put a 256 stick into the open memory slot. No way they would solder 512 MB onto the mainboard before the 12' PB has 512 on the mobo.

But the BTO upgrade from 512 to 1 gig will cost less than the 256 to 1 gig BTO now, so it's still good news.
