almost 6 am in Shanghai

Well today will hopefully be the day Apple starts shipping 20" iMacs with BT.

That is today meaning Monday the 20th. :)

While-ing away the time

Ok, while we wait for Apple to notice us, consider this:

My Home Entertainment System (see how using all caps makes it special :p ) consists of a 600-watt Sony Receiver, an RCA Tivo, a Sony 50-CD player, a JVC VCR, a GE 36-inch TV, and a Pioner 3-Disc DVD Player.

Thanks to my purchase of (but not shipped yet, heh...inject some ironic humor here that only this crowd can appreciate) my iMac G5, I will be able to eliminate three of these components.

I intend to copy a selected portion of my CDs -- those that stink get tossed into a box that will go into the attic -- to my iMac. I will burn my own CDs of mixes I want, for play in the car. Because I bought the Airport Express Base Station, I will in the future play all songs from my computer, programmed in the order and mix I select. Good bye CD player.

The VCR is going to the junk pile because I figured out how to switch between local stations and satellite using the TV (so technically this isn't related to iMac purchase...but it got me thinking about it).

The DVD player is moving to the back bedroom because I can output with the iMac directly to the Sony receiver in the living room, using their output cable.

This frees us room on my HES for my printer (HP 1350), which in turn frees up a shelf space above my computer desk to place my Sony Clie stand, my Kodak digital camera stand and in the future, my iPod.

This is just so cool. Apple really is two steps ahead.

When I get my iMac (Steve, are you listening?) I will post before and after photos of my HES and computer setup -- uh, I might need some tips from you all about how to do this.

Finrock: Bonnie brought some rain to Gainesville. Charley missed us completely. Frances was simply miserable -- I spent today (Sunday, 9/19) married to my chain-saw and lost three pounds of sweat and its not the first or last day I'll be spending time with her. Ivan missed us too, but oh my god the misery it caused is both breath taking and heart breaking. I feel so sad for those folks.

I would love to see pics of your set up when your up and running. You have some cool ideas there. I have just been thinking today about what and how i can do things to mine. :)

Yeah, it kinda makes me wonder if I have any right being so impatient waiting for my iMac when people all around our state are still waiting for their lives to get back to normal.

And while we're off-topic I'm sorry about last night. That call was nuts!

On or before 10/01/04...

"Know better"??

try ordering some files by date and use DDMMYY..

Although, the ultimate would be YYYYMMDD--most significant followed by less significant. MMDD is as close as it gets to that final goal.

It makes sense too: September 3rd would be 09 (September) / 03 (3rd).

Inside pictures of 20 inch iMac

I am assuming all the picture we have seen of the inside of the new iMac is the 17" because there is no wasted space. Has any posted a comparison between it and the 20"? I assume they use the same motherboard but is there just empty space around the outside? The optical drive would still need to be near the side but what about the hard drive? Maybe put it there for balance.

The military also uses dd/mm/yy, so the European way isn't all that strange for me.

I was at my local Apple Store at Chestnut Hill today they had 3 new iMac's G5 on display. They had 2 17" models a 1.6 & 1.8 and a 20" 1.8. They were getting a lot of attention.

There are eight different mid-plane assemblies for the iMac G5, depending on the model, processor speed, bluetooth and optical drive. If you can find pictures of the 17" and the 20" you'll see that things are arranged slightly differently inside to accommodate.

On the 20" you can see a little more "room" around the sides.

ScotR:

Will post 'em. Basically, I see going from six components down (Receiver/switcher, Tivo,TV, VCR, CD, DVD) to just the first three. At my computer desk, will move printer and DSL over to HES. Many wires will go to dustbin of history. I like that a lot.

Finrock: No sweat. It's just football. Thought it was an entertaining game. Back in the 90s, when we had peace and prosperity and a dynamic coach in Spurrier, I felt I could indulge and get emotional about it. Today, with all that's going on, I see it more objectively. It's just a game. Still fun, but that's all.

To all: Checked at 8:34 EST Sunday 9/19: No news.

As times goes by, I will increasingly believe there is a problem. I hope tomorrow morning to be proven wrong.

Actually, if you look closely, I believe you can see that the bluetooth module is just an add-on module. It sits above the powersupply, to the left of the power connector, just below the modem module.

So a seperate midplane assembly for that is unneccessary.

As for the optical drives, the would be absolutely no need to change the MPA to change the drive. These are ATA drives, and the controller supports both brands.

That leaves four different MPAs: 17" EDU, 17" 1.6GHz, 17" 1.8GHz and 20" 1.8GHz.

Then you may speculate if the 1.6GHz is just a clocked down 1.8GHz ( same MPA, different firmware - which would be economically sound choice of Apple... )

I'm going by service part numbers. There are indeed eight different parts, each with a different part number.

20" MidPlane
661-3295, No Bluetooth, 1.8 GHz
661-3314, with Bluetooth, 1.8 GHz

17" MidPlane
661-3296, No Bluetooth, 1.8 GHz
661-3315, With Bluetooth, 1.8 GHz
661-3297, No Bluetooth, 1.6 GHz
661-3316, With Bluetooth, 1.6 GHz
661-3321, No Bluetooth, No Optical, 1.6 GHz
661-3317, With Bluetooth, No Optical, 1.6 GHz

The No Optical version is for the low-cost education-only model. This model also does not have a SATA interface and has a slower graphics card.

That should clear it up a little.

I don't think that the 1.6 is a 1.8 clocked down. I think that they are the lowest yields that IBM and Apple are shipping. Drives the costs down for the low end AND helps move iMacs out the door.

As long as 1.6's are a viable percentage of the yields at IBM I believe they will stay, at least in the education version. When yields improve significantly then the top of the line should move up from 1.8. the other thing I think we will see is that the low end of the PM will always be one step up from the low end on the iMac.

PS. It's still Sunday in the US, but it's now Monday morning at the factory in China. Maybe today will be the day for the 20" with BT.

Its 11:00 PM EDT and no shipping notice. Its time for me to get to bed, no hurricanes approaching so I actually have to get up and go to school tomorrow. No worries, though, I have a great Keynote all prepared for the kids.

question about new imac

i just got my new imac and just have quick questsion. I have an external speaker that is hooked up the the imac. When i turn on the computer, the chime sound doesn't transfer to the external speaker but it plays in the internal speaker. Is it supposed to do this on the new imac? Because the powermac doesn't do that. On the power mac that chime sound goes straight to the external speaker one. Just quick question for any one who has new imac.
thanks

notice the smileys? Think he knew that ;)

Did anyone's iMac make a stop at Subic Bay Freeport in the Phillipines? Mine stopped there after Shanghai for about 4 hours, and I hadn't seen anyone else mention a stop between China and Alaska.

I too am waiting for a 20" with BT

Ordered 31/8 est. shipping 5/10 to Germany.

Seeing that a large number of 20" BTO iMacs without the BT have shipped, yet none with I wonder if this is a fundamental problem with the BT implementation. Does anyone else think its suspicious that all the iMacs Apple showed in Paris had wired keyboards & mice ? Why didnt they show off their new baby looking as good as it can (ie. without wires).

MAYBE, because they havent got any ?
MAYBE because they dont work ?
MAYBE because they cant make them ?

Paranoia rules !

Maybe they just didn't want you carrying the keyboard away ? ;)

Subic Bay stop would either be a mechanical or a stop if it has a FedEx facility. If there is a facility there then count normal turn around time plus at least 12 hours for flight + unloading. (By the way, Subic brings back a lot of memories for those of us that were in the Navy in the old days . . .)

I also ordered 31/8 (6 AM in the US) with a 29/9 ship date. Looks like the EU has a weeks delay in terms of shipping the 20". Word from one salesman at Apple indicated that they are getting the units out faster than anticipated so you're order will probably beat that date - and will be on the next bulk shipment heading there. I doubt if Apple is shipping new iMacs out of China at anything less than a bulk shipment.
