Yeah, well, if it's any consolation, you will most probably receive yours long before we even receive "base" builds up here :(

My timeframe of "hope" is mid oct ( well, I hope for beginning of oct but reality regularely knocks on my door and tells me not to hold my hopes to high... beginning of nov is more realistic :( )

You have many valid points, gatorron!

What I wish, though, is that we could get some real answers from Apple. Talking to a number of Apple Store employees and store managers it was apparent that I knew more about the situation than they did. Then again, I often feel that way walking in to an Apple Store :)

I just wish someone at Apple would say "We're waiting for the internal Bluetooth modules" or "They will be shipped on October 1st". But in all honesty, Apple still has 10 days to make their ship date, so I really have no reason to complain - except for the fact that thousands of people are already enjoying their new iMacs and I'm stuck with this crappy iBook.

Ok, its not crappy. I love my iBook (G3/800) but it doesn't even compare to that iMac G5 that I played with yesterday at the Apple Store.

I believe that Apple is running their production in large batches, just like auto companies build cars in batches based on interior colors. The primary batch would be the display size. Because BT is on the mother board the BT option would be a separate batch for both the 17" and 20" runs.

There may have been a problem with the BT MB, but I have a feeling that it will just be run in it's own batch and that Apple is clearing out as much as possible on the customer orders AND reseller orders.

The good news is that the iMacs are going through the line faster than anticipated. This is probably due to the design being simpler than with the G4 iMac.

Our 20" BTs will be shipping - I'm sure waiting for mine!

I thought the BT module was just that, a module you could add. Is it not and it's a different logic board? That would explain a lot.

Knowing what I do about PC Manufacturing there is going to be a point where they just can't meet the ship dates, so they gotta be doing something soon. I'm just being the kid in the candy store waiting phase because it's not 9/29 yet. I'd love to see them ship it earlier but right now they've not failed to meet their promise.

I just wish they'd not shipped everything else when I asked them to ship it in one shipment.

I think there's been an asumption that the BT is on the mother board based on Apple's assertion that the new iMac is the most user servicable computer they have ever made. Notably missing from the items considered by Apple to be user installable is the BT module. Therefore, the BT must be soldered to the Mobo.

As for your other issue, My theory on Apples unilateral decision to split up shipments is to render our BTO orders uncancellable.

On the other hand, I could just be a little paranoid. ;)

While I wait for my new iMac, I'm stuck on a ruby iMac (G3/400) (ouch), that up until a few weeks ago, froze every other time I moved the mouse. It's not like you need a mouse to use a computer though. :)

On Thursday I saw the imac G5 on TV with the CEO of Apple Germany. He explained that the BT module has a sensitive plug. It is located near the I/O... he said that is possible to build in this module afterwards from a authorized Apple Repare Center. My conclusion: it can't be so difficult to add BT.
Someone in Germany has a shipping confirmation for his iMac with BT + wireless keyboard and mouse.

Yeah, it figures that the one silly configuration that I ordered HAD to be the one that Apple can't seem to get out the door.

Sheesh.

A quick thanks

Finrock, thanks for the tip about setting the processor speed. I wrote it down as one of the first "must dos." I used Macs in the early 1990s, loved 'em, but have been trapped in PC world since. So I will be learning panther from scratch and it would have been just by random that I would have stumbled across that setting.

BTW, hope hurricanes have stopped, don't you? We sat through 76 straight hours of rain and gale force winds, lost 40+ trees...I'm still cleaning up, but feel very lucky. I know it wasn't nice down that way...hope it wasn't too bad.

I'm also in the waiting for a 20" BTO BT boat. I do think we have timing on our side. As Apple's 4th quarter ends on 9/30, they will do everything they can to build, ship and book the revenue for their year end.

I agree, but if I were VP of Sales and I had to worry about stuffing the store and reseller channel vs. fulfilling a bunch of one off orders I'd stuff the reseller channel as best I could.

If I were the VP of Sales that is ;) Fill the orders that affects the most revenue/profit with the least amount of work.

In terms of sales, right now EVERY iMac that comes off the line is sold so it doesn't matter, in terms of the quarterly results, if they are reseller or BTO units.

My guess is that they will put batch of 20" BTs through sometime this week (I'm an optimist) and then get back to the stock units.

No problem! I'm always glad to help out a fellow Mac user whenever I can!

Yeah, I figured you must be somewhere in this great state of ours because of your name. Things have been pretty nice this weekend, we were spared the significant damage that the east coast, the southern gulf coast and the panhandle endured but we did get a lot of flooding. How did you fare?

More on topic: lets Apple can meet these estimated ship dates!

Loving our 20"

My wife's 20" arrived 3 days ago. Shanghai to Huntington Beach, CA in 3 days and I picked "Standard" shipping. I installed an Airport card and 2*512 sticks of Crucial memory. Processor is set to Fastest in Energy Saver. A few thoughts:

This is one awesome computer. We both love it. It's very fast, dead silent, crisp and clean in operation and design. It's heavy and feels very solid and stable on it's monopod foot. I have scoured the screen checking for ANY defects and there are none to be found that are visible to my eyes.

This iMac will see heavy use in our office, 8-10 hours/day 6 days a week. This is why we opted NOT to get/use the battery powered Bluetooth keyboard & mouse. The small white cables are no problem here.

If I can say there is one disappointment it would be that it has only 10/100BASE-T Ethernet built in and no way of upgrading it. Our office has been upgraded to Gigabit Ethernet (1000Bast-T) for over a year now. Our daily backups are done using a script over our LAN to backup all computers to one central location. Gigabit makes this a much much faster process.

All in all we absolutely love this awesome machine!!! :) :) :)

UK shipments

Does anyone have any word on UK shipments? I've read a lot of the posts here and most who have got the iMac seem to live in the US.

Has anyone in the UK got theirs yet? If so, where from?

Cheers

Man, I almost want to get one. These things look freakin' sweet!

Hmmm... I wanted to quote your sig. Yes, they do look sweet! As far as the Amiga goes, I still use mine too! I'm excited to try the Amiga emulator on the new iMac.

According to the 20" iMac G5 Service Manual:

Service modules • Midplane Assembly 1.8 GHz - available with Bluetooth (661-3314) or without Bluetooth (661-3295)

Looks like this reaffirms our speculation as to why our iMacs haven't shipped yet. The Midplane Assembly is different depending on whether or not Bluetooth is included.

Is this just the 20". or is it the 1.8 G5?

Has anyone received a 17" iMac with the 1.8 G5 and BT?

No, the part numbers for the mid-plane assembly are different for the 17" and the 20" iMacs, different with or without BT, different with or without optical drive and different for processor speed (1.6 / 1.8).

I see eight different mid-plane assemblies listed between the two service manuals.

(ordered it on 03/09-delivered on or before 01/10) :(

Man... you have to wait 'til next January! That sucks! I knew you had to wait longer across the pond but that is crazy! ;)

"ordered on 03/09" means September 3rd. "delivered on 01/10" means October 1. We Americans use the silly mm/dd/yy date format, but other countries know better and use dd/mm/yy.
