My 20" iMac on the way...

Well, I ordered 16 Sept and this afternoon (25 Sept) I received email iMac has shipped. Here's the configuration:

- 20" iMac G5
- Internal Bluetooth, wireless keyboard, wireless mouse
- 1GB Memory (2 sticks of 512MB)
- Airport Extreme
- Educational Discount

Friday night, I picked up a 20" that became available because someone ended up not picking it up. I still had this order and it was too late to call Apple to cancel. I waited to call Apple this morning at 1000 and lo and behold, the iMac had shipped. Fortunately, I had not opened the other iMac and returned for a full refund.

Now, I have to wait it out like the other folks....but at least it's on the way from Shanghai CN... :)

Wow people are already ebaying the imac G5's if you can't wait you can probably get one faster off of ebay then apple!

go here has great pics of a 20"

Yeah I've noticed them being sold on ebay too. And yeah you will absolutely get them faster than Apple. You could have it overnight shipped if you were willing to pay for it. Also they come equiped with some things people were wanting to upgrade anyway, like 1GB of memory, bluetooth, etc. If I were looking at getting a new iMac, I'd look at ebay first. Those boxes haven't even been opened.

Feed the addiction...

Found this link over on another forum...

http://dtibs.home.comcast.net/iMacG5/

Has some nice pictures for those of us who still don't have our iMacs.

In other news, I'm off to the supermarket to stock up on beer for the impending hurricane. If nothing else, two 12-packs will keep me alive until the power comes back on and FedEx brings me an iMac.

Upgraders

I've never followed a thread like this before, but it seems a lot of people are going from really old Macs to new iMacs. I felt underprivileged with this iMac DV SE 400, but it looks like I have some competition!

My 20" with BT was last reported in Anchorage (at 2:47pm).

Get the 'ell outta China

Finrock:

What did you mean by "waybill number?"

Not the Fed Ex Tracking Number? Some other number? I have a print out of my original email from Apple.

True, several different number listed, nothing labeled "waybill."

Please enumerate, if you haven't worked your way too deep into that 24-pack yet.

BTW, they're saying 40 to 70 mph winds here for most of tomorrow. We're battened down, generator and scotch, so we'll be fine. Hope all is well there.

If you click on the tracking number link in the email Apple sent to notify you of shipping, you get a different tracking page than if you log on to FedEx and put in your tracking number. The one you access by the tracking number link is more detailed, but doesn't seem to have the correct estimated delivery date.

not sure if you've hit the scotch yet but i was somewhat puzzled my your your sentence above, it made my head hurt. at any rate, i have some suggestions a little more closer to your implied meaning other than 'enumerate' which means to count off or value... what about explicate, elucidate, enucleate, expound or most likely, to explain? ;-)

hope i'm not irritating. in fact i know i am and just wanted to apologize upfront and lay the blame squarely on apple for not shipping my imac and canon for not shipping my 20d!

Where's that thesaurus when you need it?

MacinDoc: Ok, I'll try that.

Melchoir: Yeah, well, laziness and scotch has that effect. I knew it was the wrong word. I struggled through the haze, and then thought: "I don't care, he'll understand."

Point well taken. Now, when I sober up, I'll be watching your syntax, grammer and vocabulary for correctness. :p

Sorry you haven't got "the word" yet. I'm sure it'll be soon. When did you order?

Great diversion

MacinDoc: Tried it. Same number, same result.

Hey for those of you in real time, and college football fans, check out TBS:

Stanford vs. USC (Rank: #1), 4th quarter, USC trailing 28-24, just missed FG. Good game.

i'm glad i can be obnoxious and it still be taken in good humour.

as per 'the word'... well, i don't think there's much hope for me for a while. i was told by one of the apple sales goons that no one is expecting imacs in australia until the 4th quarter. (started today) and well, gosh and damnit, I was at a psy-trance festival in portugal when the imacs were released. needed some time to consider and forumulate so i didn't order until the first week of september. so that'll push my order back to half way through october probably. =P

anyone who wants to send me their imac, i promise to give it a good home! really, i do!

A party in Shanghai

Gatorron and others my iMac is hanging out with yours as well. I hope that one guy is right and our iMacs are actually on a plane right now headed our way. I guess tomorrow or Monday morning will tell more.

Good luck to you Florida guys tonight. After preparing for Ivan last week I know what you guys are going through, but man 3 hurricanes in the last month running up the pennisula of Florida. I feel for you guys.

I have to say that Apple's been great through all of this. Clearly they're working at least six days a week. The strategy was the get a bunch of iMacs out -- to stores, customers in US, Europe, Canada...quickly to spread the word.

That our particular shipment apparently ran into the weekend pause doesn't bother me. I'm pretty content to know that I'll soon be able to pour acid on this PC and watch it melt. :p

kjgnola: Due to hurricane, I may or may not make to the office Monday. You'll know, because I'll email you if I do. If not, watch for me to email you Tuesday. BTW: what is the deadline for the report you're working on?

it would be my personal assumption that apple (in china) is in fact working 24hours a day. and it would in fact appear to be fedex who are the only slackers around.. not that they don't work on sundays and 24 hours a day, they do, just not enough of them ;-)

apple sell the kits. an unassembled imac kit, just waiting for that kid (inside) to put it all together. save time on assembly. =)

i very much doubt my imac coming by the end of this week. grrrr-ness

No problem on the delay. I have plenty of time. We don't do our presentations until November, so a few days won't hurt.

As far as Apple, I agree. For production to ramp up this quickly from a Aug 31 rollout is pretty impressive. I know Apple has issues with delivery, just look at the 2.5, but with this machine if they expect to gain market share they have to produce a LOT on time. the wintel world is used to pretty quick turnarounds on products and having to wait a month or more for a 2000 machine will puch people away.

Although I will say I kind of like the ffact that not a lot of people have macs.

I am looking forward to next week, I think Tuesday or Wednesday we will get ours. The tough thing will be leaving for New York Wednesday night. Just to get it set up then leave, man that is going to be rough.

I never felt like this when purchasing a dull, that is certain.

I HAVE NEWS!!!!!! :)

So, there is still no shipping notification from apple. and there is still that ridiculous october shipping date. BUT! sometime this weekend, apple charged my amex. it hasn't even been processed onto the online statement yet, but it maxed out my credit card (though it DID go through! pfew!) and so i called amex and they're like 'oh, you have reached the maximum of your card. apple charged you a whopper of birdie!'

yippee for me! apple said they would charge my credit card about 7 days before delivery! could this mean this week? i sure hope so. i'll be annoyed if it means the week after! grrrrr!

iMacs are arriving on the shores of Australia!

:D MORE CONJECTURE!

The apple status page, had previously been showing PDT time which i take from google to mean Pacific Daylight Time. But now, just suddenly in the last 10 minutes it has changed to JST. From living in Japan i take it to mean Japan Standard Time, but was wondering if anyone else had idea's? I think it is Japan because just before it had said the 25th and now it says the 26th. (Date-line)

what does this mean? why is my order in Japan time? admittedly, chinese time is only an hour behind japan...

Is my iMac moving? I think so! At least out of the factory!

In the shipment notification e-mail I received from Apple it listed the following lines about halfway down:

TOTAL USD 2,192.43 DO NOT PAY

When I entered the Waybill Number into FedEx's tracking page it listed a little more detail than just clicking the tracking number that Apple sent me.

Hope this clears things up.

I know he's just a toddler/baby and everything, but what a div, you're meant to put all the wires through that hole so they're bunched up nearly.

FedEx says my order is shipping using IP Direct Distribution, which means Apple sends out a bunch of iMacs at a time, and then they get distributed to each person once they reach the US (see link). Is this what they always do? Does this mean they just ship a bunch of them every couple weeks?

http://www.fedex.com/us/customersupport/supplychain/faq/ipdd.html#topthree14

Sorry if this was already mentioned in this thread, but I don't think you can search within a thread, and there's no way I'm looking through 46 pages for this.

I think that all this means is that it's far cheaper to ship bulk crates of 40 or 50 iMacs together than sending each one individually from the overseas manufacturing plant. So instead of shipping 5000 iMacs individually direct from factory to the customers, they'll ship 100 crates to LA, and from there the crates will be broken down and shipped to the individual customers. Might add an extra day on to the shipping time at most.

well it's about time one of those crates was sent to australia! geez!

Oops!

I just realized that the link to the alternate (more detailed) FedEx tracking system was in the detailed Apple Order Status web page, not in the email confirming shipping. Sorry about that!

BTW, I also tried getting shipping into by entering my waybill number, but that gave me the least detailed and least up to date info.

Actually the iMacs have been here since Friday since delivery was attempted for me and nobody was around to sign for it. Oh well just wait to Tuesday I guess.

As an aside though Apple's online page hasn't been updated and they haven't sent the confirmation of shipping, although I had that happen previously.

That's pretty ridiculous, BUT! it could mean my iMac will be here on monday?! should i be organizing the family to take shifts waiting for the delivery guy???
