Sweet heavens... it's in Seattle today!

Despite the mismanagement and inaccurate tracking FedEx suffers from, my package is (supposedly) now in Seattle! I live a mere 25 miles from the sorting station and the status says it left the ramp at 6:30 AM. Now I'm praying that they don't deliver to my house before my 14 year old son gets home to sign for it (some time after 3 PM). Shouldn't be a problem since he was there and signed for the first package that was part of my order (the 3 year warranty package).

How I managed to get myself to work this morning with the knowledge that my first-ever Mac is probably being delivered today is beyond me. I hope my boss recognizes my work ethic - and forgives me if I take a day off next week to really get elbow deep into the OS :D

woohoo!!

yay!!! i finally received it!!!!!! at 10h26 to be exact:)

i'm sooooo happy!!!!

it's beautiful!!!!!

even if I just have a 17" it seems so much bigger than my old 17"emac!!!

right now I dont have much intalled to test it but it does look very fast!!!!

IM HAPPY!!!!!!! :)

good luck to all of you still waiting!!!!

i'll be going now;)

ciao!

It's on the truck!!!

Just refreshed the FedEx site - it's on the truck for delivery right now - and no one is home until 3PM today! AAAAHHHH!!! I hope this comes to my house after 3PM today...

Stuck here at work - can't do a thing about it!

It's official...they missed the second ship date. Got the second delay email pushing the OOB ship date back to 10/13 now.

Still looking forward to switching to Mac. But as an existing/former Dell customer, I gotta say Apple has a ways to go in the customer service department. Apple phone service folks are plenty nice so it's not the people they're hiring. The problem is they've got essentially no information whatsoever at their disposal. And when you take 6 weeks or more to get a product shipped, and miss multiple estimated ship dates along the way, you gotta be able to give the customer an explanation. It's ok for things to get held up. But you gotta offer some info about what's going on. Why is the product being held up? Is there a particular aspect of the BTO configuration that's holding it up? Can the system be reconfigured in a way that would get it out the door quicker? So far Apple's given me nothing to go on.

Hopefully my experience is isolated. But again, for someone who's dealt primarilly with Dell lately ("Dull" as they may be :D ) the diference has been a bit of an eye opener.

I'm joining the group...

I finally got around to it (been dodging hurricanes for the last 6 weeks  ) and placed a BTO for a 20" iMac. Already I'm checking the order status page...

I need a life

3.2 Dell soon to be switched

Agreed: cool products; weak customer service

I totally agree with you. In my case, I was given no rationale for Apple Canada's brain-dead policy of not allowing customers to pick up deliveries from the local Fedex depot. So, I can't ship to my house as both my partner and I work (to afford Apple products :p) Since we're not home during the day, we're having to get our iMac (when it arrives on Christmas eve at this rate), sent to relatives who don't even live in the same city as us.

With Dell, they'll try delivery, then you can pick it up from the depot in the evening after work. Convenient huh? With Apple, they'll try delivery, then the package gets sent back to them! So for anyone who can't sit at home all day waiting for a package, you're out of luck.

Apple may have a reason for this policy, but they sure aren't going to tell a customer about it. All my dealings with their phone support have been totally useless. Like you say, they provide no information; basically telling the customer to get lost and live with it.

Great products Apple, but your customer service really needs some work.

Interesting how my iMac is actually going farther away from me. :( The mind Boggles.

At least I get my Exp. shipping refunded.

Congratulations on the purchase of your first Mac. I hope that the timing will occur as with your first deliver. Your son will probably be excited also about signing the iMac.

mine is here too!!!

Woo hoo - it arrived! I saw it was delivered about 10am this morning, and immediately called my boss to take 1/2 day vacation. Got home and checked it out .... it's fantastic! I got the 20" and I'm surprised at it's weight because it's a little heavy, but I'd rather it be heavy then easy to knock over.

I took a few pics and an actual screenshot to show off the resolution, if anyone's interested:

Moving all my stuff over from my old imac G4 via ethernet. That 250gb HD will be filled by tonite :)

I had dreadful experiences with Dell that made me never want to use a PC again. Keep in mind that your experience is with a completely new product, and there's a lot of uncertainty with that.

New 20" iMac Impressions

My new iMac arrived today--and I happened to have taken the day off to be home while some repairs are made. Perfect timing!

Here are my impressions so far:

1. I could not get Airport to talk with my Linksys wireless router during the setup phase. I had to make some configuration changes to my router, but still no luck. Once I rebooted, however, Airport saw my home network. I installed all the updates and rebooted before I actually attempted connecting. (No problems with iTunes). WEP has no problems.

2. The fan noise is noticeably louder than my old G4 iMac. I don't like using lots of A/C, so it's about 75-77 in my home office most of the time. I also cranked up the processor setting to "highest."

3. The speakers sound okay, but I wish they were a bit louder. All in all I prefer the Apple Pro speakers that came with my old iMac.

4. The setup transfer of files and settings from my old iMac worked perfectly. I transferred documents, preferences and applications (but not network settings since I didn't have airport on my old iMac). There was an issue with files being associated with the Office 2004 test drive rather than my transferred Office 2004 installation. I used the "remove office" app to remove only the test drive. (Be careful when doing this!) Everything seems to work fine with office now!!

5. It really screams with iPhoto and Photoshop Elements 2.0. The iLife '04 version of iPhoto choked my old iMac, but it doesn't even hesitate on this new one. Those are the only two things I've used so far. I'm looking forward to using iMovie to see how things work there.

20" models showing up in Vancouver...

I just spoke with my reseller who received 2 of 31 orders today. They're standard config models, but hopefully the're the proverbial stone in the dam.

Please, oh please, let me receive mine on Friday!! I have a whole long weekend to play!

Anyone else in Vancouver receive their BTO models?

I ordered directly from Apple, not through a reseller. After waiting patiently 4 weeks for my standard config 20" iMac to arrive, I was told by Apple that it was delayed... another 4 WEEKS!!!

It doesn't make much sense to me that the ship date if I buy it today is the same as the ship date if I bought it a month ago. This is my 4th mac that I have purchased and the first time that I have had this kind of delay. To top that off, to echo other people's sentiments, the people at Apple Canada on the phones could not explain why it was delayed so long.

Ugh... So I wait...

Hope so, but my understanding of the shipping method they used is it is guaranteed to be delivered at 10:30AM local time.

It seems there are no answers. They'll arrive when they arrive. Now that I've officially sold my previous iMac in anticipation of having the new one by now, I'm restricted to the Wintel machine I have to use at work. Much energy can be wasted watching this thing unfold at a snail's pace. I'll have to try to enjoy it by reading this thread and see happy pictures while I imagine what it must be like... :(

True, though it "seems" like the waits for the 20" (BTO and otherwise) are longer than for the 17".

The shipping issues revolve around the FOFO (first off - first out) world of airline freight. Shipments come off planes and go onto trucks. If there's a problem with the paperwork, or a delay, or something breaks, or bad weather, or a volcano etc., the offending items are shunted aside and the next plane in gets unloaded, and the next one..... and so on. The stuff sitting on the ground is a lower priority than the stuff coming off the planes.

It's much the same in modern (and very small in the size/volume ratio) container ports like Vancouver or Los Angeles.

PROBLEMS AFTER WAKING SYSTEM UP

Could all of you that have the imac please provide comments if you see any strange behavior related to system sleep? For example, I've read a message from someone saying that after their system was in sleep mode, and they brought it back, the system seemed unstable, and they had to re-boot.

I'd like to get a response from anyone regardless if you've had any problems or not. Thanks.

How do I change the speed on my imac G5?

I've read that you can change the system speed .. how / where do you change this? I can't find any pre-installed utilities to do this.

damn you all!!!!!

ARGH!!!! NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

I suffer from the "new gadget" problems....

Damn it all!!!

I'm one of the lucky few who have major problems!!!

1- Fan noise going crazy as hell for no reason sometimes!
2- WORSE: Cd can't eject 90% of the time!!!! It tries to but it get stock while ejecting so it's sucked back in again!

ARGH!!!

I guess i'll wait a couple of weeks until there a model everywhere and than complain to apple and hope to get a new one shipped.....

:( :( :(

this is just not cool.....

:( :( :(

If I'm correct you are refering to the ability to change the Energy management of the processor. By default it's set to "Automatic", changing it to "Highest" seems to make a significant difference. You can do this by going into the System Preferences, then Energy Saver, and clicking on the Options tab ... there you will see a pull down menu near the bottom where you can change the setting to Highest. Keep in mind this has a tendancy to also increase the speed and frequency of the cooling fans so you may also experience more fan noise.

I hear you. My new iMac 1.6 crashed contantly. I took it to the local Apple Store and the tech pronounced it DOA!!!!!

Unfortunatly, I can't just exchange mine for a new one at the Apple Store because of the BT and Ram upgrades.

So, Apple put in a new order for a duplicate system, and mine is back in the box waiting for FedEx pick it up and ship it back.

Another month of waiting for me :(
