I've been reading this thread for the past couple of weeks, with mixed anger, frustration and impatience at watching you one by one getting your nice shiny new iMacs before me. Finally, however, mine has arrived.

Originally it was shipped on 23rd September and via airport holdups (in Shanghai for over a week) and a relatively undocumented trip across Europe (K&N and TNT only updated the status the day before it arrived) its arrived today the 6th October. Now I don't know whether I've just ignored other peoples messages due to the length of the thread (its pretty long) or my ignorance brought on by my own impatience causing me to subconsiously miss other peoples long shipping posts, but I'm surely winning with 14 days as longest ship-to-destination so far?

Oh well, 14 days hasn't been too bad I suppose, I feel for you who are still waiting for initial shipment emails and those stuck in delays, hang in there, your day will come ;)

Well, this is my first Mac, and first impressions are good. Its clean and runs smoothly and I'm hoping for several years pleasurable and trouble-free computing.

Hope everyone else enjoys and has a slightly more pain-free experience with their new computers now or whenever they decide to arrive.

Cheers, see you all for the next product release,

Paul

Gorgeous

The iMac finally arrived this morning at around 10:00. I had to rip it open and set it up before coming to work. I don't think I can add anything to what other recipients have written, but they were all right when they said how shockingly big the screen is.

I did a fast look for dead pixels, and I luckily didn't see any.

My AirPort Express won't work for some reason, but I'll mess around with it tonight.

It's been a really interesting time being obsessed with you guys. It made it more bearable.

Good luck everyone, and continue giving FedEx hell! I'm happy to say it's all worth it.

At last, my iMac 20” arrived at my house in France yesterday.

Now if Apple could just build me a mouse with 2 buttons and a scroll wheel (Bluetooth) then I would be in heaven.

In addition to the macmice, check out the RadTech

http://www.radtech.us/Products/BT500.aspx

As a Switcher (did use Macs from 1990-1992), I'll probably get one, love the scroll wheel for surfing, but am getting more atuned to the one-button wireless, which is attractive, like all Apple's hardware.

You wanna talk frustration? I placed my order the morning of September 1st. OOB ship date September 30th. Got a delay email on October 1st pushing OOB ship date to October 6th. Now it's gettin late in the day on the 6th, and still no change in order status

This being the second missed ship date, I'll be wantin a little financial incentive to keep me on the hook.

Always look on the bright side of life...

Not that it's a contest to see who's waiting longest, but another poster (IBSNOWEDIN) and I both ordered stock 20" systems from Apple Canada's on-line store on Aug. 31. Initially given a ship date of OOB Sept 30, we've since received delay notices. My ship date is now OOB November 1!

Since we both got the discount for education customers, it appears that we're at the back of the "school bus" compared to regular customers. So cheer up. It could be worse, you could have my ship date... ;)

Smooth sailing

I ordered my iMac 20"/1.8G/1GB/250G/SD/BT/APX on 9/2, received shipment notification in 10/4 (the promised date). Today (10/6) it's in Memphis, just two hours' drive from my house! I'm betting it arrives tomorrow. Here's the tracking history:

I learned when I pre-ordered my 2G iPod before they were available that the first units go by air regardless of the shipping method selected, so I didn't shell out extra $$$ for express delivery.

In light of this new information, looks like I'm on the bright side of the street :D No edu discount for me though. I'm payin rack rate but it hasn't exactly helped so far.

You know I wouldn't be frustrated at all if 1) I wasn't watching all these much later orders fly out the door, and 2) if I could get just a scrap of an explanation from Apple customer service. I'll take anything at this point...lie to me if you have to. Just make it believable. Cause the "I don't have a clue why it hasn't shipped" response isn't workin for me anymore :D

It's here

My BTO 17" iMac G5 is finally where it should be - in my house!

Here's a picture of it on the floor (I was too eager to set it up on the desk!)

A word of warning to those getting the new iMac's.

Make sure you install Airport 4.0 and software update to 4.01.

At first my iMac worked just fine on my wireless network (2x AEBS and 2x AX in 2700 sq ft of home but when I got home this evening to get my fix my internet connection was borked and it could only see the closest airport which was the AX underneath it.

Doing some quick troubleshooting I realized something was amiss when I got the 'you can't manage this with this software' error message trying to check things out.

Installed Airport software 4.0, and updated to 4.01 and things are fine, after re-installing iTunes which magically disappeared.

That last part was odd, but hey, it's working now.

I should mention something I noticed about my 20" iMac. I had been considering the two-way swivel (up and down, not left and right) to be a limitation of the design, but once I had it on my desk, I found that a light touch moves it left-right too. It's just that you are turning the whole computer, not just the screen. It's totally natural, and I don't think I'm endangering the components by moving the computer while it is operating. So I like my iMac that much better, and I told it I'm sorry for ever doubting it.

Thanks for the info, Doctor Q. I was wondering about it being able to turn left and right. Are you on a particularly smooth/"slippery" (as in varnished) surface? I was wondering if it would work on something a little more gripping.

I'm sure your iMac appreciates the apology. :p

I had the same problem with iTunes. What was weird was the iTunes icon was still in the dock but had question mark over it. Re-installing iTunes cured it.

I had some more iTunes weirdness this afternoon. When I tried to hook up some new powered speakers, I thought there was something wrong with the amp that's built in to the sub-woofer module but it turned out that the audio out jack on the iMac had stopped working. I had to re-boot my iMac to get it working again.

On the subject of weirdness, I think sleep mode doesn't work quite right. It seems like the whole system gets a little wonky after coming out of sleep.

I hardly ever have to re-boot my Powerbook, but I've had to re-boot the new toy a few times already.

Yikes, that's painful.
Mine is a BTO 1.8 17" also on Educational Pricing - Ordered 9/18, shipped 9/30, stuck in Winnipeg since 10/04
Weird.

It's a plain old office desk. The surface looks a little shiny in the photo I posted of me and my new toy, but that's just the camera reflection. Any regular desk or table should be equally accommodating for turning the iMac back and forth.

imac memory

found out today my 20" will be in by the weekend, so i'm ordering matched 512's online right now. i noticed tho that crucial says the chips are 2.6v, as opposed to the "iMac memory specification" document link , which says 2.5v.

is that a problem? i'd be pretty pissed to wait and end up with the wrong stuff!

man im getting psyched... great timing too, i have new project starting right now too :) :) :)

Quick Questions...

How do you copy DVD's, if possible? Also, I copied all my pictures to the "Pictures" folder... but when I opened iPhoto, no pics where there... do I have to add them still!? Can I copy DVD's!?!?

update from quebec!

in case this has anyone interested:p
i guess it only left winnipeg tonight! (i wonder why they just keep it there for a whole day? oh well... i guess they have more trucks at night!)
i'm hoping for a delivery tomorow since it will probably be in montreal after the night trip... leaving a truck to come and ship it by 12h:)
and in a worse-case scenario i'll have less problem staying in school till the end of my classes (on my worst day at that!) by having it only friday:p

It would be better to start a new thread for these questions. However there are lots of threads on burning DVD's try doing a search - here is one https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/84946/

Your photos will not automatically show in iPhoto from you pictures folder if you need to work on them open iPhoto and import them.

???

anyone know how to move over your itunes music from windows so that your songs keep the same properties? none of my music has the ratings i previously gave them! please steer me in the right direction! thanks!

again, this should be a new thread. but quickly... i have only tested this when the library has been organised and copied to the itunes music folder.... if you copy the whole library of mp3/aac files to your mac and whack them in the itunes library folder, then copy the windows xml itunes library file, overriding the one on the mac then start itunes, itunes will re-align. if your music is not organised there will be other more complicated solutions...

Really? Happy? :)

I had OOB 5th Oct. and it "Departed from source" 4th Oct. Now it's on its way to Europe (Luxembourg-Netherlands-Finland eventually). It seems to be quite random how these things happen...

Winnepeg

I'm getting repetitive, but damnWinnepeg. Almost a full week of my imac G5 being held in Winnepeg

REGULATORY CLEARANCE DELAY

I've been following this thread with interest during the last few weeks.

I'm currently a Windows user and have decided to give Apple a try and see how I get on with it...

Anyway, just to let people in the UK know that they should keep an eye on the online UK shops who now appear to be getting stock of the iMac's.

I have today ordered my iMac G5, 1.8, 20inch from John Lewis web site and it should arrive with me within 5 days (the good thing with JL is you also get an upgraded warranty in with the price and a really good returns policy).

JL don't now have any in-stock again (as I think I ordered the last one), but if JL have them then I presume other online shops will also have them soon..and it might avoid having to wait for the 3-4 week shipping delay from Apple directly.

Can't wait until it arrives :D ...
