The sad situation is that when you ask a random person in the Apple store what’s an i7 processor, they don’t know. And that’s exactly the targeting group of Apple these days. Be honest, who on earth is buying an Apple computer with know how of technology these days?
That's always been Apple's target group...

Seriously, it's on Intel, not Apple.

This again?

I know Intel has had their share of problems. I'm not gonna deny that.

BUT... it's funny how the blame always gets shifted to Intel whenever Apple doesn't update a computer for 600 days... or maybe a few YEARS... *cough* Mac Pro, Macbook Air...

Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Asus and countless others seem to have no problems releasing timely updates.

In other words... everyone is using Intel processors... but only Apple has these huge gaps between releases.

So... are we still blaming Intel here? :p

They don’t know what Mac Pro is even when they have it for display...

The other’s don’t have the thermal issues either where the i7 MacMini isn’t able to reach a higher clockspeed as an i3. So why sell the option...

Why?

Genuinely curious why you believe this?

I'm not sure the premise of this article is all that meaningful. yes it's been 602 days. But the components in the current iMac's are only 1 gen behind.

is it behind... YES, and Apple could do better here to keep the internals at least up to date.

in reality though for good competition, they should be keeping up and doing yearly spec bumps, if not in CPU, in other areas, like slightly larger storage or RAM options.

There's really no technical reason that the iMac's aren't on the 8xxx series CPUs now though.

They can’t handle the heat of faster processors anyway. Tried converting a movie? The fans will go grazy and when looking at the processor, they only use 50% of what they should be capable of.

My mid 2011 iMac died last week. The GPU of course. This would be the sixth time in twelve months I pulled her apart and baked the GPU to remelt its solder. Put her back together again, but nope, she’s dead, Jim.
Looked For the Zillionth time at the current iMac line up. No updates. Ah well might as well price it out anyway. AUD$950 for 32 GB of RAM! At least I don’t have to pay the Apple Tax and can install my own. Looked at processor options: what’s this? Seventh gen CPUs at current gen prices?

Disgusting.

My son is specking out a windows PC today. A nice project for him to build it before uni starts. It will do.

I suspect even if Tim Cook finds time in his very busy political schedule to finally get around to approving a new version for release it will just be a spec bump to an already out of date processor, or a redesign to make it impossible to even upgrade the RAM, and drop useful ports.

Ugh. Mine is from 2010 and it works great, but I could use some new hardware. And I feel like we’re on the verge of a redesign. If it doesn’t happen this year then I might just pull the trigger.
I hate to say it but if it’s an investment for you, you could better start looking elsewhere. If you’re using creative cloud, most of the programs are run better under Windows anyways. :( Can’t believe I was ever able to admit this.

I worried about it being updated soon in early 2018 but I bought it anyway. It's more than a year old now but it's still the latest model .
You are not the only one that though there would have been an iMac update in early part of 2018.

There were a lot of threads stating that the 2018 iMac would be announced the end of the first quarter, then the 2018 WWDC, then late summer, then October, then before the end of the year, of course oine of that ever happened.

My thoughts were that Apple might announce it as early as late 2018 to spring 2019. Spring is fast approaching, and it looks like that everyone might of been wrong.

Please... mail your story to tcook@apple.com. I’ve done it several times so my mail should already been blocked by him.

I finally convinced my brother to move from a PC to a Mac and told him to wait until the next iMac comes out...well he has now been waiting for a year and a half!

Your Brother: "Hey Bro, can I buy that killer Mac computer you talked about, like a year ago?"

You: "No."

I feel your pain.....

Still happy with my 2014 retina. Getting the i7 4.0 with 1TB Flash and upgrading it myself to 32GB has meant it’s lasted me well and will continue to do so. Great investment.

Apple stopped being a computer company A LONG TIME AGO. Remember when that overrated salesman/neglectful father Steve Jobs dropped "Computer" from Apple Computer? He depreciated Final Cut, Aperture, iMovie, Pages. Tim Cook and Sir Jony Ive are merely fulfilling Steve Jobs's vision. But most people have long known that if you want a REAL computer to do REAL work, nothing beats a Windows PC. Having a device with the Apple logo no longer carries social currency. As I have long known being the smart cookie that I am, the iPod would usher in the death of Apple. One time, Apple sorta kinda maybe made good computer-like things. Now it's nothing more than Fisher-Price.

Funniest thing I've read in a long time. Thanks for the chuckle.

Last time I tried using a Windows PC to do "real work" I spent 5 minutes waiting for it to boot up then another half hour trying to get rid of all the advertising billboards on the start page.

But fear not because you can always install http://www.classicshell.net and make your Windows PC run like it did in 1995, back when it was actually usable

iMac, macMini and macPro are all red-headed step-children for Apple now. They'll all see their updates at some point. (macMini recently) They'll be years between updates and I can guarantee they will be underwhelming.
