We are sooooooo Spoiled!!

When it comes to multi-track audio production and/or video production, I still find my 2015 iMac plenty powerful. The screen is beautiful. I've tried larger screens and find it a pain in the ass to keep rotating my head left and right. For those 1% who need more balls, I'm pretty sure Apple did release an update to the iMac, it was called the iMac Pro. If they updated the iMac last year, it would have stole sales from the iMac Pro.

Don't get me wrong, I like frequent mobile hardware updates, but for a desktop, I'll take a well designed and reliable product instead of "new & improved" just for the sake of keeping up with whatever the latest Intel processor. They only thing I'm kinda grumpy about is, "why no touch-bar keyboard???" I get it that there are touch-bar haters, but some of us wouldn't mind the chance to hate it.

All Apple needs to do with desktop is offer spec bumped models (e.g., newer CPU as they become available) between major updates. You know, like in the old days.

I'm sure Apple would be happy to do that if Intel actually produced chips with spec bumps on an annual basis

I know it will never happen, but Apple needs to redefine the industry. Enough of upgrading the entire device! Give us modular upgrades! Sure, keep it "non-user serviceable", but allow us to purchase a new CPU module and slide it in! A new RAM module and slide it in! And make these modules cross-device compatible so the same module works in iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro. It's time to completely rethink the computer design! If Apple is serious about respecting the environment, they would take this road.

Are you crazy! Then Apple can't charge you for a monitor every time you need to upgrade.

Trust me, it is super hard to mount computer components in a case (especially those with custom Texas screws), I mean being a trillion dollar valued tech company, you think they can do this kind of work?

Apple also can't stress enough the importance of GPU processing in OS X Mojave. We will just keep using these "almost as fast" AMD parts; because, well GPU processing is very important as we have mentioned.

not hard to keep these machines updated if apple gave a damn.... Intel has released new chips including the 9900k which smokes the 7700 in the current machine. Also, if they would switch to nVidia we could have 20 series cards. Not rocket since. Yet, nvidia and apple are still in their pissing contest and who knows why they don't adopt the current intel chips...

Any new intel chip out right now is a spec bump from their current offering....

If Apple's CEO is all about profits, then here's a thing: in 2010 I bought a near top-of-the-range 12-core Mac Pro and a Cinema Display. I dropped a shedload of cash on it, and it's been brilliant ever since. But about three to four years in I figured it was about time for an upgrade. I would have given Apple more cash, but there was no new Mac Pro worth buying. That cost Apple several thousand dollars. Then another three or four years after that I may well have upgraded again – and maybe updated my display. Nope, no new kit. So there's another couple of thousand dollars gone begging. My Mac Pro is now nine years old and Apple STILL doesn't have a machine I want to upgrade to. I've changed phones only twice in that time, to the tune of a maybe a thousand dollars.

2019 marks the limit of my patience. Either the new Mac Pro is worth buying or I'll give my money to Strongbox – a small UK company that makes killer, multi-GPU PCs. And that will be MANY thousands of dollars Apple doesn't get. Again.

They can’t handle the heat of faster processors anyway. Tried converting a movie? The fans will go grazy and when looking at the processor, they only use 50% of what they should be capable of.

yes, vbut that's true today anyways, with or without the 8th series.

lets not confuse two separate issues.

Apple has a big habit of milking the tech as long as they can for LOW profit devices. Only when sales drop a lot, will they make ANY improvements.

Except that the trashcan Mac Pro was not a "new and improved". iMac Pro is a stupid concept because most people asking for pro level machines already have pro level monitors to go with them. If Apple had made the iMacPro a headless MacPro and dropped the price around $1000; there would probably be a lot less bitching. But then again they would have had to also make the RAM, Hard Drive and GPU accessible. All things that Apple is against.

They changed the name from Apple Computer Inc. to Apple Inc. and after Tim Cook's arrival we've seen this effect much more...
Mac is my reason to buy an iPhone but Apple started to forget its origin sadly... Now, we have a team in charge of Apple want people to move from MacOS too iOS which is totally useless. It's like Blizzard announcing Diablo Immortal to pc gamers. I truly wish that smartphone market gets saturated much more quickly and AAPL goes down rock bottom. Then maybe they will realize how greedy they got.

Yep, most of my clients were on a minimum of a 1 year upgrade cycle. If Apple released something faster, they bought it. The 2013+ MacPro put a fork in that. Apple left easy money on the table.

I’m surprised you’re satisfied with your iMac or iMac pro. When I’m editing videos on it the fans go crazy and not getting the speed I supposed to get. Other studios have already migrated to Windows with hp workstations and I’m very impressed by their performance and value for money. This will be my latest Macs and I think Tim Cook agrees with me.

Guys, I took one for the team and sacrificed my chicken Clucky to read its entrails and find out when the refresh is coming. It wasn't exactly clear but the interpretation said that the "iMac pro was very important to Apple", so I am guessing that means four and a half years?

....naturally Apple was trying to get the re-designed iMac out in 2018 (The anniversary year).
But could not get it done and now the problem for the marketing firm called Apple, is how to release the new iMac and by default a revised iMac Pro ...when the modular Mac Pro is supposed to be released in 2019. (Or maybe showcased at an event, for delivery... in the future).
A speedy new iMac range might sell heaps and dull the market for any Mac Pro. (P.S. What about a 32 inch iMac Pro?)

Funniest thing I've read in a long time. Thanks for the chuckle.

Last time I tried using a Windows PC to do "real work" I spent 5 minutes waiting for it to boot up then another half hour trying to get rid of all the advertising billboards on the start page.

But fear not because you can always install http://www.classicshell.net and make your Windows PC run like it did in 1995, back when it was actually usable

No this is a chuckle; MSI laptops we bought boot faster than the brand spanking new i9 MacBook Pro I have. Complaining about Windows 10 because you never use Windows 10 is a pointless argument. I do like OS X better, but Windows 10 is very usable; it is just way different than OS X, for better or worse.

The bottom line is anyone who wants to tinker can make a Hackintosh that smokes anything Apple currently has for sale; for about half the price. Apple hasn't been serious about "computing" for quite some time.

This comment thread is so salty you would swear Steve Jobs himself pissed in everybody's cheerios

Ugh. Mine is from 2010 and it works great, but I could use some new hardware. And I feel like we’re on the verge of a redesign. If it doesn’t happen this year then I might just pull the trigger.

Good luck with your wait. The good thing is that the older machines seem to hold up really well. I'm on a PC now, but my husband's based on Mac and is in the same holding pattern as a lot of people here.

Nvidia has no 10bit display support other than Quadro. “Professionals” editing videos and images are not going to want to lose that. I imagine they also won’t want to PAY for Quadro’s in their Macs as well. Now nvidia could allow for special Mac drivers that unlock 10bit display support. They....could.

Impressive, nearly a whole TWO YEARS! Well still have a way to go to beat that Mac Pro update.....

I can’t honestly not say if all they do this year is a spec bump, I won’t be disappointed...

Still they’ve managed to do the Mac Mini so their is hope yet. Shame they literally seem to have ignored until very recently their entire desktop lineup for several years, and only updated the laptops.

I'd go for the 5K iMac if the top-end CPU and GPU are decent and you can still upgrade the RAM without a massive price increase like all their other recent products. Otherwise I just want 32GB RAM and 1TB NVME SSD minimum. Would prefer to not spend more than $5000 if I can help it.

Refurbished base iMac Pro is our best bet at $4200. Vega 56, 8 cores, 32GB, 1TB SSD.

Really? I drive a two 4k displays at 10bit on my 1070.
