I don't understand why Apple doesn't at least do a simple spec bump once a year on every model. Toss in a slightly faster processor, more RAM and / or more storage and keep the price the same. Is it really that hard? It doesn't have to be a massive event worthy update every single time.
Think Apple is looking to ride as long as they can between updates with their macOS hardware and others. Recently Mac mini, MBA too. Just like AirPods. Nothing more to add in 2 years? But yet plenty of excuses on the state of the company when they can’t get everyone to upgrade their iPhone every year.

IN OTHER and unrelated news, Apple sales are down.

OF course, this is unrelated also not related to Tim awesome leadership as CEO.
Apple sales in China are down, along with:

NVIDIA
Caterpillar
Samsung
Tiffany
Intel
FedEx
Goodyear

Without China, Apple would have set revenue records again and did so in the US, Canada, Mexico, Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Korea, Poland, Spain, and Malaysia.

It wasn't great news, but it's certainly not limited to Apple and it IS certainly mostly a China story.

So I suppose you would be happy buying a two-year-old car with zero miles for the same price as a 2019 model?

(Sorry about the car analogy everyone)
This isn't about what I would do, but people buy cars that are end of model years all the time. A lot of cars also are the exact same for several years, but just called 2016, 2017, and 2018. I don't like buying cars that have sit around, because they have fluids in them and tons of plastic. Electronics that are still being made as we go along, no problem. It's not like every iMac was made 602 days ago. They just have the same spec, likely like your car you overpaid for.

So if the "don't buy" recommendation is based on the idea that updates are happening sooner rather than later, why complain about the lack of updates?

I'm sure Apple would be happy to do that if Intel actually produced chips with spec bumps on an annual basis
Intel has been shipping 8th generation desktop CPU for awhile now (source: MacRumors from April 3, 2018).

It is quite possible that Apple is planning more substantial iMac upgrade, similar to Mac mini. Apple kept Mac mini in the line up for 4 years without updating, with 4th generation CPU. Perhaps not every generation of CPUs from Intel are suitable for Macs. But by all indication, current 8th generation CPU offers enough benefits (faster 4K, lower energy use, six core).

Refurbished base iMac Pro is our best bet at $4200. Vega 56, 8 cores, 32GB, 1TB SSD.

And the theoretical turbo clock speed of the iMac Pro is equal to the base clock speed of the 2-year old iMac: 4.2GHz. That's why the fastest single-core Mac on Geekbench is a 2-year old iMac.

Unfortunately, a lot of 3D design software can only compute geometry on one core at a time.

The lack of updates to the iMac pale in comparison to the Mac Pro. We’re approaching 6 years on that one! And regardless of how much lip-service Apple paid to the MacPro by saying they were designing a new one...well, that was almost two years ago and we still don’t have anything!

This isn't the line that even needs the most help, it's still perfectly adequate for the intended audience even though you should never buy something with a mechanical disk drive in 2019, or 2013 for that matter. Their laptops need a lot more help, and sell wayyyyyyy more units anyway.

I own a 2017 5K iMac and I completely agree.

Sure the CPU and GPU could be faster, and it's certainly not the ultimate pro machine, but the performance is still perfect for a large portion of users doing 4K video, graphic design, sound, dev, etc. The iMac has never been the ultimate performance machine, that was what the Mac Pro was for.

Apple laptops have been crap for the last 4 years. Even the 2015 15'' rMBP had an outdated 4th gen CPU which ran super hot.

I am happy with my 2017 5K iMac, hopefully next refresh I will get will be 2021 or 2022

Same here. I expect mine to last until 2022 at the very minimum.

CPUs have been getting minimal improvements in performance over the past 10 years. I doubt the CPU will get old in less than 5 years.

The RAM can be user upgraded.

The GPU can be "upgraded" via eGPU and TB3 for intensive tasks.

they’re 600$ overpriced and have the same specs as ur average 700$ budget pc

An $700 pc and an iMac... you can barely get a comparable display for $700, let alone the quality of machine that is housed inside an iMac... I have a working iMac in my house that is 10 years old: where’s your 10 year old working PC brah? Different animals. Out of one’s price range isn’t necessarily overpriced.

I bought the 21.5" top of the line imac last november and I don't see too much wrong in it. But maybe if they improve stb ratio and shift the ports in a far more acessible locatiomln it would be great

It would be really funny that Apple completely abandons iMac and MacBook Pro and only concentrates on iPhones and iPads......only to realise that there are no devs left to create “awesome” “fantastic” apps for their iToys.
