What I can't get over is "iMac Pro is a powerful, top-of-the-line workstation designed for professional users with demanding workflows, such as advanced video and graphics editing, virtual reality content creation, and real-time 3D rendering.".... permanently mounted to a display. :(
that setup will carry you very well for the next 4-5 years...and after that time, you can get a new one easly
i mean the xeon chips, ram, and ssd it will serve you v well for even more than 5 years...the gpu is that becomes absolute faster...

Only 16GB?

The price is eye watering. I don't see VR on a Mac taking off, not many Macs are capable off the shelf.

Those AMD 4xx, 5xx Apple use are ****.

Even that Vega "Pro" 64 isn't the full AMD Vega - throttled due to heat concerns.

Having said that, this machine is a step in the right direction. Slowly, slowly Apple.

More like Apple Disappointees, constantly being disappointed by the pro offering as a pro and not a makeshift home pro - moonlighting as such. I don't know any pro who want's to spend that much money on system which isn't updatable. I made that mistake once with the MacPro and have had problem after problem. To this day I cannot run any third party display without running into issues. Even their "supported" monitors like the Dell 5k is glitchy as F. Not good enough. My last system cost almost 8k. Great value for money there. NOT.
Sadly I have to agree. My studio is still running 2010 / 2012 Mac Pro’s and they are starting to show heir age quite bad but replacing them with something this expensive that we can’t yograde or repair doesn’t make any sense.

Give Pro’s these exact components in the cheese grater tower and they’ll buy them by the truck full. I don’t understand why apple refuses to see that. I love innovation as much as the next guy but Pro machines don’t need piles of innovation. They need upgradable components that work reliably. I don’t care how small it is or how quiet it is or what colour it is. I just need it to chew through 6K video footage like it’s nothing.

My last two iMacs did not last very long (dead ports, the famous slowness sickness, etc.). I truly hope that Apple redeems itself with this one and is not using crap parts to bump margins. Maybe this really will be a true pro machine?

Apple today announced the iMac Pro will be available to order on Thursday, December 14. Pricing starts at $4,999 in the United States.

iMac Pro is a powerful, top-of-the-line workstation designed for professional users with demanding workflows, such as advanced video and graphics editing, virtual reality content creation, and real-time 3D rendering.

"iMac Pro is a huge step forward and there's never been anything like it," said John Ternus, Apple's VP of Hardware Engineering.

The all-in-one desktop computer has a 27-inch Retina 5K display within a sleek space gray enclosure. Apple also includes a space gray Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, Magic Mouse 2, and Magic Trackpad 2 in the box.

Apple said the iMac Pro is the fastest and most powerful Mac ever, at least until the modular Mac Pro is released.

The machine can be configured with up to an 18-core Intel Xeon processor, up to 4TB of SSD storage, up to 128GB of ECC RAM, and an AMD Radeon Pro Vega 64 graphics processor with 16GB of HBM2 memory.

The high-end performance is made possible by an all-new thermal design that delivers up to 80 percent more cooling capacity than a traditional iMac.

With four Thunderbolt 3 ports, the iMac Pro can drive two 5K displays or four 4K displays at 60Hz simultaneously. It also has a 10 Gigabit Ethernet port, four USB-A 3.0 ports, an SD card slot, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Other tech specs and features include a 1080p front camera, stereo speakers, four microphones, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.2.

Apple previewed the iMac Pro at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June. The news, together with the modular Mac Pro, helped alleviate some criticism that Apple was no longer focused on professional users.

Apple has yet to provide exact pricing details on a configuration-by-configuration basis.

What about a release date for markets outside USA?

What Apple is trying to say here is here’s an iMac we really don’t have time for Mac Pro. So you won’t feel bad about it, we are putting a pro name on it add more ports and double the price. Merry Christmas and shut-up I will take your money.:D

Yes, why does the Pro desktop not get any attention? Many pros want to use their own monitor that is best suited for their specific needs. Another example of Apples's current obsession of form over function?

There was a time once, not too long ago, when news like this would greatly excite the Mac fan in me. Nowadays the care-o-meter barely twitches. There are so many questions that need to be answered first before I will trust Apple with my money again [as a professional CG artist]. Their pro hardware line, thin on the ground as it is, is in shambles after years of severe neglect. It will take more than a laptop on a stick (I'm sorry, but that's what this is, being largely non user-upgradable) release to win back what they've lost... if they can at all, at these frightening prices.

The margin is much higher this way.

Comes with Bluetooth 4.2

But all that doesn't come in $4,999s, does it.

I wonder, what Nvidia's Titan V can achieve. The Mac seems to never get the chance to outpace in the desktop world as in Android.
Radeon Vega is better architecture to work, OpenCL and Metal fly on it.

Cool. But when are the wireless AirPod cases coming out so I can charge it only wireless charger?

Yeah! Can't wait. I'm still using a late 2014 iMac 5k which still holds up well.
I hope the extra options I need don't bring it close to $10K.
