I made the 2 hour drive to the Micro Center in Yonkers this weekend to grab mine. Had to fight the serious temptation to spend the $1,000 I just saved on other items.

For me, this was a no brainer. My 2011 iMac just suffered it’s 2nd display issue within 10 days. It was time to replace it. I was holding out to see what a 2018 iMac would bring, but since I tend to max out my machines via BTO, I wouldn’t really save that much going with the iMac versus the iMac Pro and would have to wait several (many?) months.

Just picked one up in the Chicago area this afternoon. They had 6, and had 5 left when I got there.

I have a 2015 imac 5K, and the speed, especially with Win10 and Parallels, is pretty great.

Be aware that MicroCenter tried to sell me their warranty for $149. They didn't hardsell at all, but told me the AppleCare warranty was $249. It's not - it's $169. I would greatly prefer AppleCare (which I bought) to a MicroCenter warranty.

That's great. Thanks for the tip about their warranty, were you able to buy AppleCare there or did you have to call Apple to purchase?

Not true - I purchased applecare for $169 at Microcenter. Not their warranty (which they tried to tell me was better then AppleCare... it isn't), but genuine AppleCare.

OK - all I can tell you is I asked to purchase it there and they told me I couldn't.

I too drove over 110 miles and bought a iMac pro this morning. Do I need all the power, no but at only $600 more than a top of the line iMac it was a no brainer. Plus I was shocked that they had over 10 in stock.

Yeah, it's one of the best deals I have seen for any iMac. I usually buy direct from Apple. But this deal was too good to pass up.

My Mac Pro 5,1 6-Core, was starting to take a dump and I was faced with the what to do next decision: Hackintosh, max-out existing Cheese Grater or invest in the latest and greatest. Time was the heaviest weighing factor. I'm in the middle of a few projects and the easiest solution was to take Micro Center up on their offer.

No hassles, no gimmicks, I drove an hour to the St. Davids location (Philly). Was in and out in 25 minutes. Due to the $1000 off, i added the $169 Apple Care without even thinking. The offer is good till March 4th and they only stock the base config.

That $1000 off deal is actually pretty amazing. That puts the base model in pricing territory of a maxed out regular iMac. It makes me wonder what are the profit margins for Apple with these iMacs

Funny enough I had one bad experience at that exact location about 5 years ago. I was in there trying to buy i think a Apple dvi to hdmi connector which according to their website they had in stock at the St. Davids location. I'm in the Apple section and can't find the part so I finally ask for help from the older gentleman working the Apple section. He's looks around for a little bit and can't find it and then makes a comment that it might be in the warehouse or something. I'll have to see who has the keys. As he says this a couple walks into the Apple section right to the laptops. He says to me "one moment let me assist this couple". He goes up to them and they explain to him they are looking to buy a MacBook. You can see $$$ go off in this guys eyes.

This guy now goes into a full sales pitch and completely ignores me. After 5 mins I walked right up to the back of him and just intensely stare and the couple looks at me very worried like I'm going to lose my lid from anger and then goes to the guy "Uh shouldn't you be assisting him first?". When he turned around I verbally laid into him about the fact he completely ignored me because of probably some commission he was going to make instead of finish assisting me about something your store is suppose to have in stock.

Not saying it's a overall bad store but I never had a store associate actually pull a stunt like that when in the middle of being assisted.

Shame theres no deals this side of the pond

I costed buying one of these from micocenter, having it shipped to one of those forwarder companies in the USA, then having it shipped from that company to the UK. With the iMac pro cost + $200 to cover shipping & insurance + 20 % VAT + import duty and it was coming in at approx £3700 delivered. This is still a saving of £1200 so is still worth it.

Not sure if $200 was overkill/adequate for p+p but wanted the full insurance cover. Would need a uk kettle lead and it has a US keyboard but warranty is global as is PSU so worth thinking about.

Laptops Direct has it at £4422 right now. John Lewis will match it but only via a rebate from what I gather.
I'm still thinking about it myself. A lot more attractive than £4900 but still well over £1500 more if I'd go for an i5 iMac with RAM upgrade etc.
hmmm...

Thats it the spec is ok for now but in 3 years... could probably do with 64gb ram and would be nice to have the Vega 64.

Makes you wonder why Micro Center can do this but Apple can't.

Have you ever heard of Micro Center before all this buzz? I have not, despite that I live 30 minutes away from one. Now everyone is talking about Micro Center. I could not resist the deal, even though I am not a pro, but just wanted to upgrade my old iMac.

So maybe they are not making any money on this deal or maybe they are even losing some - they have created so much buzz, now their brand is a lot more familiar among people who chose to buy Apple computers. I am sure it was worth it for Micro Center. Pretty smart publicity, IMHO.

Its strange there is such a discount so quickly and apple hasnt shut it down.

Makes you wonder whether its uptake has been successful. As a niche product if it doesnt sell well in the short term as people have been waiting for an alternative then its not going to sell well in the long term which means another long in the tooth desktop.

Its a great system but its not ideal for many high end users which its geared toward.

Plenty of YouTubers seem to have bought one at least. :D

Saw the Debenhams discount too.
Not sure where best to buy from. Not bought from either company before.

Drop it another £200 and I'd buy one today.

At first I thought it was just Microcenter (they certainly have the largest discount). However B&H is also discounting them $500-1000 for upgraded models (500 off the base) with a coupon deal via AppleInsider. Other companies are also discounting them. At this point it's pretty clear that Apple is at the very least not enforcing minimum pricing on these things. At the most, they are actively encouraging discounts.

The question is why? I see plenty of pros and producers buying these things. iMacs are very common in the pro edit/film space for mid level/corporate/indie/documentary (if you're not an Avid shop, like much of Hollywood). I see them everywhere.

There is a LOT of desire for a workstation design in a sleek quiet iMac body. That is what these are for. Why Apple is discounting them is likely to push adoption to all those who really want or need something like this before the Mac Pro comes out, so the markets are aligned properly.

I highly doubt it is because the iMP isn't "selling well". It was never going to be a "big seller" to begin with. It's a niche/halo product to address the Pro market so that Apple can keep their feet in that critical influencer market. Which I, for one, am very happy about.

It might be a smart move to bring back some users. Thing is unless you want the base model... TBH for the niche product Apple could have subsidized them for them to be truly irresistible and get the apple pro ecosystem back on track.

Certainly begs the question why arent apple offering the deals.

Bit of an odd one never seen a brand new Apple product discounted 20%.

Great idea. Which company have u used for shipping?

It is temping as the $1000 off puts it actually close to i7 iMac territory. Still obviously much more expensive than a loaded i7 iMac but i'm sure it's resale will be decent in 4 years. I'm glad Apple didn't do something stupid and gimp a base model with 16 GB ram. 32 GB is very decent for the future unless you are a huge poweruser which in case you would probably have a higher end model anyways.

My only issue at the moment is I would bootcamp it and I'm sure how well the bootcamp drivers are going to be. Sounds like from early reports pretty lackluster.

32gb isnt that much really, run a few programs, even programs seen as normal like Chrome consume a lot of ram, then play video etc soon disapears.

It is in the right direction and makes 8gbs look puny on every other model.

Im not a heavy heavy user that edits video or complex 3d modeling but I am a professional and I run toward 30gbs on my Mac Pro on a daily basis using bridge, lightroom, photoshop, indesign and illustrator while having background tasks such as browsing and music playback.

Add a bit of image rendering and it quickly eats available ram.

If you dont have a bit more headroom the computer quickly starts to crawl.

I presume Debenhams Plus and laptops direct work off the same stock or are related somehow. Both out of stock and price shot back up to £4699. No deal at that price for me.
