Thirteen THOUSAND dollars? I'm sure there's some use-cases for it. But I'm also certain someone's going to go drop some FU money to scroll through Facebook on it.

Expensive if you’re not the target user, but not that much if it brings in the $. Will go spec one for the heck of it - ah close to $8k with the tax, apps and educational discount (10 core, high end gpu, 64gb ram and 1 TB storage.) Not the target user, but if I knew it would last 7 years, I would consider it. As it is any 27” iMac I spec for myself now will be close to 4K.

13k for a “pro” machine that can never be upgraded. Ok, Apple.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
You highly overestimate the number of professionals who want to open their computer and upgrade the internals in any way. Even the baseline machine is a beast, so people will use these for 6-7 years and then buy a new one. There's a HUGE segment of consumers who do professional work for a living and don't care about the fact that it's sealed up. The screen quality and footprint make up for that.

And if not, then great. A new Mac Pro is coming next year.

That's...Honestly not as high as I expected it would go! The tower Mac Pros and Power Mac G5s could get well into decent car territory.

My only wish is it was more configurable, I need a lot of CPU for my big data workload, but Vega Pro is a wasted cost, while someone training Metal 2 neural nets would go max GPU. Hope the Mac Pro provides that ability to min/max different components.

People complaining about the price need to realise that the iMac Pro isn't aimed at the average consumer, we are talking professional editors, content creators and so on. Movie studios will buy these, it is not very often you see a Windows machine in the editing labs (at least not here in the UK).

Not sure about this, but I do know that 3D content software like C4D, Unity, Vue, Substance Painter, etc... run much better on PCs largely due to better programming of video card drivers and SLI support. I nearly cried when I used a rented $3K PC for a project that made my $6K MacPro feel slow and unusable. It was sad. I have no idea what to expect with the iMacPro, but can't wait to see some real tests.

I look at it this way... The only thing you need to worry about is getting the amount of CPU cores and RAM you think you'll need for the next 5-ish years. Everything else can be added ("upgraded") with TB3, of which this thing has a generous 4 ports. Storage, displays, and even external GPUs now are no problem for this thing. Upgradability is not what it used to be with the advent of ridiculously fast modern I/O speeds. Heck, I even switched my base 2014 iMac to an external boot SSD (over USB3) because it was a lot less hassle than 'upgrading' it, among other benefits to going external.
As CPU's have stagnated, you're right. GPU's is where this iMac "pro" is going to be outdated within 2-3 years with no change of upgrading.
Even TB3 is going to hamstring a Titan V. Which should be an option for this thing as it uses less power than a Vega 64 and blows it completely out of the water....

The iMac Pro review in the article earlier in the week here, where the reviewer had a 10-core, 128GB RAM, 2TB SSD and 16GB Vega video, claimed a similarly priced PC would be $5200. It made it sound like the PC was MORE than the iMac ($4999).

Today, that same iMac Pro shows it's $9599. The PC is HALF THE PRICE!!! LOL!!!

Ok, I've now heard the word "stealthy" to discuss the color scheme of a desktop and I'm curious. How do people picture themselves using a "stealthy" computer? Are they sneaking around at night with an iMac under their arm and the space grey color will make them less noticeable?

If I had a $13K computer sitting on my desk 24/7, I'd want it to be pretty stealthy! Invisible to everyone else, ideally...

let‘s not forget that arguably the main reason the imac pro came into existence is the failure of the trashcan mac pro and the time it takes to design a new modular mac pro. the imac pro is a sexy distraction, an interim machine that will look like an impulse buy once the actual pro machine ships (hopefully) next year.

People, plural, spend that much on bottle service in Vegas nightly. It may be difficult for 'you' to imagine that much money, for many it's a drop in the bucket. Or a night out. Raise your goals and expectations.
People also spend that much refueling their corporate jets every day but that number of people you refer to will not support the further development of the product at a PROFIT, which is a Business Model that has never changed and also why it has taken so long to get a new machine to market. Companies do not throw money out the window intentionally.

Ordered mine. Really looking forward to it. Would be curious to see how many people here who say they are waiting for the Mac Pro instead (grumble grumble, expandability blah blah) are actually students living on beans. If you need the power now and it will speed up your work and allow you to do more, what's the problem? Doesn't matter what comparable PCs cost anyway, they don't run MacOS.

Apple made an Apple Watch out of gold and priced it in Rolex territory. People bought it.

Did they? I mean Apple did not bring it back for Series 2 or anything even close to that price point. In fact, after Series 0, it made a bigger pivot from the high end fashion angle to health and the most expensive AW sank to $1,300 from $13K+

I think this iMac Pro is a short term band-aid too, just biding time until Apple can get an all-new, practical Mac Pro out. This new iMac Pro just slows down pro defections a bit until a true pro solution, i.e., better user upgradability, is announced.

You can, they just seem to have forgotten to add the Buy button to the iMac Pro page (just change the US URL)

https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/buy-mac/imac-pro?product=MQ2Y2B
The Apple web page for iMac Pro still does not have a buy button, but yes, the link you provided works. Another cock-up Apple? A long list this year. Now that I can see UK prices for Ram, it appears Apple is overcharging customers by £300, at least when I look up Ram prices for the iMac Pro. Shame on you Apple. I wonder if a nice Apple Service centre will unglue the back and add my Ram of choice at £300 cheaper than Apple. Labour to remove back and re-attach £20. RAM is a 3 minute upgrade on iMac 5Ks and the models before that.

I believe the Base Model starting at $5000 is cheaper than a similiar speced pc, BUT prices increase drastically as you choose a different more powerful configuration, so the maxed out iMac is more expensive than a similiar speced pc. Didn't confirm though...
