You understand that we're talking about iMac, right? What's the point of iMac if you were to link all those external devices to it? It sounds messy. I love the fact that there is only power code going into my iMac; clean, minimal, has everything I need in one piece.

If history's taught us one thing about Apple products it's that they'll happily ditch old technology if they think it's not necessary, then occasionally sell it to you as a wired accessory. It's becoming increasingly obvious Apple will ditch optical drives completely, 2 of their 5 Mac products have already done so and Apple no longer use discs to distribute software. if I were you I'd clear some spare on your desk ;)

Imagine if the entire circuitry of the iMac was just a long wide thin boxed rectangle that you inserted into what was the DVD slot.

I don't think this has been mentioned yet... a wireless keyboard with numeric keypad!

I am using the wireless keyboard...and haven't noticed the lack of the numpad till this day. I like that I can place my trackpad right next to it. A numpad would make it far too wide and unwieldly. :p

I'm using it too at work, and in that same arrangement, but I still miss the number pad. I don't know if I'll ever get used to this or not. Why don't they just make a version of the wireless keyboard with a number pad for those that want it? I did see a 3rd party bluetooth kbd at fry's that had a num pad.

They should just make a wireless num pad, then we could use it for air, and mbp to, bur really don't make it into a whole keyboard

My prediction would be:
- No chin
- No DVD (this format died years ago)
- SSD (maybe... though not convinced this will happen yet)

I do think it's odd that the iMac's haven't got i7 CPUs as standard though. The biggest question i have at the moment, is when is the new release likely? It would be odd to get a speed bump now, and a new machine when Ivy is out in Q2 2012. There isn't a new OS soon either, so i don't expect anything significant to happen with the iMac range until Ivy.

This is particularly annoying as i need a 27inch iMac... NOW.

Why does everybody keep saying that DVD is dead? I can understand that for a laptop, but for a desktop that just sits on your desk to me there is no excuse not to include it. I use it almost every day and having to have an external would be a real mess. Please leave the DVD alone! Unless of course they replace it with a BluRay, that would be fine with me but not at all necessary IMHO.

Exact same predicament. I've almost decided to go ahead and get it this year and hope the 2012 edition comes out a year from now ;) but any input from others is welcome.

Oh, I would like to add..

Main volume will be an SSD similar to those of the MacAir, but in a Pci-e connection, not sata, for the best SSD speeds

In addition, a bay to wich you can put in 2x 2.5 hdds in a standart RAID O

I am inclined to agree. You aren't going to carry the imac around, so the few mm or grams removing the drive saves likely won't be very significant. It is still a desktop, and so should retain most, if not all of the traditional functions.

Nor do I think many users may need i7 even (though I wish there was a cheaper option to upgrade it). I think you need to realise that not every owner will be a power-user, so we should avoid cramming it chock full of high-end tech so as to keep the cost affordable.

Reasonable changes

1. Ivy bridge
2. USB 3.0
3. High performing SATA III SSD options
4. User accessible Hard Drives for long term service ( I keep my macs for 5 yrs avg)
5. GPU upgrade

The rest of the machines is fine IMHO

I was expecting a mid-late Q2 release especially since IB has gone into mass production as scheduled. I hope that is still the case and Digitimes has been really hit or miss lately so anything they say should be taken with a grain of salt.

I am dying to upgrade my 21.5" iMac to the newly redesigned version.

The day it becomes available, I will be getting a 27" version.

Mainly a mid-sized screen. 21.5" = too small. 27" = too big. 24-25" = juuuuusst right.

I just want you to know that I never once considered my 21.5" to be too small. Not for a single second. Until I read your post.

chinless design would be nice.
USB 3.0
Optical Drive for those 'old fashioned' programs, games or to copy something to etc
SSD
small strip type light on bottom to light up keyboard.
A full numberpad wireless :apple: keyboard.

24" would be ideal. I will be upgrading regardless of the changes in '12 as I like to keep my gear on a 2 year replacement cycle.

Only internal storage should be a SSD, 256 base, 512, and 1024g.

Maybe in five years. 1024 GB is 2500 bucks, right here right now. And that's without apple's profit margin.

What I expect:
• no Superdrive
• no aluminum bezel at the bottom
• thinner, resulting in:
• usage of 2,5" HDD's
• CPU's with lower TDP
•*Paired with a Thunderbold display featuring an internal GPU
•*And obvious: USB 3 support, thanks to the new chipset from intel.

So bang-for-the-buck it wouldn't be the best iMac ever released, but I'm guessing we'll see very thorough Thunderbold integration, aimed especially at prosumers, which will make it featurwise worth the plunge.

I am very confused as to wether I should get a iMac on Black Friday or just wait for the new line?? ugh

What are we looking at maybe 4-6 months the most until we see the new line?

4 months at least, assuming the new models get released in March.

I agree, the duration is like neither here nor there. Not that short a wait that it will be here before you know it, but not that long that you can't wait and absolutely have to get a model now, especially for something you know you will be using for quite a few years. :(

I agree it is also going to be my first ever Mac....I think I'm better served waiting. Unless we're talking over 6 months then I might just purchase hopefully not though.

What I definitely think we will get
- No optical drive
- Thinner
- Smaller chin/no chin at all
- Ivy bridge (inc USB 3.0)

What we might get
- Greater SSD Integration (SSD as standard on the higher end, if not all models)
- This one was mentioned in an earlier post, but outside chance they may move to 2.5 inch drives to accomodate a thinner model, although I personally can't see this, as I havent come across many 2.5 inch drives above 1TB

What I would like to see but we probably won't get
- Blu Ray (even as an optional external)
- User accessible HDD bays
- Option for matte screen
- Reintroduction of a 24 inch model

@superlatic:

- No optical drive Makes no sense to remove the optical drive on a desktop machine
- Thinner Same comment
- Smaller chin/no chin at all This and above are mutually exclusive I think
- Ivy bridge (inc USB 3.0) Please, esp. USB3
