I just want Apple to get rid of the chin. That's all I've ever wanted. It'd be so freakin' gorgeous without it. An iMac that matches perfectly with their Thunderbolt display would be so amazing.

Like others I'd like to see apple make the machine more (not less) configurable. Yes, this means not treating it like a macbook. I'd like to see an iMac pro. An all in wonder, user upgradeable, user configurable iMac Pro.

High end options like:
30 inch 10bit matte screen (would also provide a bit more room for internals)
three user-replaceable hdd slots
8 ram slots
Blue Ray burner (just put the damn thing in there so we can output to them if we'd like)

I'd pay $3499 for a top of the line processor, top of the line (mobile) graphics, the matte screen upgrade, 2TB drive, I'll add my own OCZ solid states, 4gb ram, ass kicking workstation.

Go back to a squarer industrial design (doesn't need all the curves) if it makes it more easily user serviceable.

Make it the same as my current 24" iMac (home) and HP 24" monitor (work) at 1920x1200 and I'd be happy. Anything higher resolution would be too much IMHO.

The thing is, i dont see apple going back to a 16:10 display. If they did that would be really nice since i always like more screen real estate, but the only macs with that resolution would probably be the macbook models with an exception to the 11.6" macbook air.

Bummer. You are probably right though. Apple seems to have degraded to hi-def tv resolutions.

The 16:10 was a major reason for me getting the MBP, i waited for a resolution dump back in 2010 before there were 1680x1050.

Now I'm waiting for the new iMac (i am not in need of it atm, so thats why i haven't bought 1 of those there are) but i would love to see 16:10 coming to an iMac again.

For the redesign i think we will get at least a smaller chin (were else would the place front facing speakers?)
But i hope to see either a Blue ray drive or no optical media drive at all.
I am not using DvD so much that i need it as a build in, but i would use blue ray if it got there.
I hope there will be an 512gb SSD option, i have a SSD in my MBP and love it, never had a system been so fast.
Ofc we will see a boost in the graphic card.
Hope there will be Ivy bridge and some USB 3.0

I wouldn't really count on blu-ray ever really making it to the macs. Steve had been against it from the start and never saw to pushing it to any of his machines. Though it would have been nice for an alternative for storage or even back up.

As for USB3 I could see it coming but for the most part I don't seen many people even using it today. People still don't even bother with FireWire or e-sata on current PC desktops or laptops.

Somewhere, the guy who fought for the chin is reading this forum with a tear in his eye and gun in his mouth.

So what months roughly are we looking at a potential release date?

In February or March, 2012 according to the upgrading frequencies of iMacs in the Buyer's Guide.

wow and all along I was thinking not until 5-6 months from now....I'm down with that.

i only ask that they make the screen so i can adjust the height.

i much prefer the adjustable screen height of my G4 to that of my plastic intel. (and or lastest models)

Shoot, I'd love to see them make another iMac like the G4. Those were awesome! The only problem is it'd probably be tough to float a 27" screen....

That, and even if you kept the current form factor and used a new "height adjustable foot" it would need to be heavier so that the center of gravity is kept. Otherwise, it would topple too easily and that'd be a mess. (this, in combination with a larger 'foot' or a tripod-ish base?)

The current hinge design is really cheap to produce in comparison and considerably more reliable.

I think it'd be cool if Apple put a removable rear panel on the iMac once again.

One thing I would like to see (I know it runs contrary to the Apple way of thinking so I'm not holding my breath) is for the RAM panel underneath the system to be widened and a slot for an SSD drive to be placed in beside the RAM slots.

That way if you want an SSD upgrade it's a user operation to install it without having to pull everything to pieces, potentially voiding your warranty in the process. Or paying a massive premium and getting Apple to install one at purchase.

I can dream :)

I would love this option but think it should also be for hard drives for people who want more storage over just speed.

I like the DVD drive so I can watch movies.
Making the insides more accessible would be great.

I agree, I love the DVD drive, not for watching movies but for burning my collection, that I buy and thus own, on my mac, that way I don't have to re-buy them in iTunes. :apple:

I don't get why people/apple are obsessed with making the iMac thinner, getting rid of the chin etc. It's a desktop computer.

If anything I wouldn't mind it gaining some bulk if that meant there was room for more powerful components, less heat, better speakers etc.

Based on the latest news it appears that Intel will delay Ivy Bridge CPUs to April 2012.

So we could expect Apple to ship the 2012 iMac by May or later.

They even released details on the i7-2600 replacement which is the i7-3770.

If Apple does update the form factor I expect it to be thinner again as the TDP of the Intel chips would be 77w and lower.

The memory they will be using would be DDR3-1600. No max RAM capacity is mentioned so I assume a minimum ceiling of 32GB would be in the offering for the new i7-3770.

Would be sweet if you can upgrade it to say 64GB. Photo and video people will love the performance edge.

Again Ivy Bridge has been delayed to April. :( Hopefully Tim will not delay the product for some oddball reason.

Apple should bring back what they had on the iMac G5, a removable back panel so you can upgrade pretty much anything on the inside. Other than that it would be nice for the chin to go away, possibly a desktop graphics card and an ssd as standard on least the higher end models would be great.

We will never be able to upgrade the video graphic card free hand...it's bounded with the iMac Bios

YES!!!

I'm so sick of Apple giving us lackluster hardware just to make stuff as thin as possible. That's one thing when it comes to mobile because comfort and weight are important, but there's plenty of space on a desk.

I seriously don't understand why this was ever removed. It's really just kind of insanity.
