How to fit a giant cooling tower in a all-in-one to stop the desktop GPU melting down??
Exactly. Apple is using a heatsink design in the iMac which is unlikely to change in newer models and which simply would not be able to deal with very powerful GPUs. I think there is very little room for speculation in terms of additional GPU power. We'll see upgrades, but not major ones.

And let's face it, Apple does not consider Macs to be gaming machines.

Long overdue!

I was starting to get worried that Apple was going to ride the current generation of iMac's until the desktop is cannibalized by cloud computing. FINALLY, an upgrade long overdue!

Neither am I, and I would be very surprised about a retina iMac, because the price at these sizes should be huge. Who will pay $3000 for a basic-configuration iMac just to get a retina display?

I am quite sure that 512GB SSDs will become at least an option.

They should also adapt the pricing to current standards. If you buy an iMac right now, you pay SSD prices from last year.

$500 to go from a 1TB drive to a 256SSD. WTF? Those prices are insane.

Superb ... my Student Card expires on the 20th of October ... So no bloody discount on this thing ! As if they knew ....

You got a couple options
1. Buy it anyway on the 24th. I've bought many computers, iPods etc. on student discount over the years, never been asked for proof (although I am a student ;))
2. Buy the current iMac on the 20th with your discount and switch it out for the new one before 30 days is up

iMac

I liked the rumor that said that the new iMac design would be groundbreaking and super thin. I think the wait in this case might be totally worth it.

Who knows!

Well, that is one problem with Apple. They release a product, and then they keep the pricing structure the same until the next upgrade. That is why you should not buy a Mac 11 months after the last upgrade, because you'll be paying severely outdated prices. ;)

They'll be all vertical and extra long, so you can reach everything with just ONE outstretched arm.

Wondering if they scratch easily?

Haha. I'm sure if you take your keys to them they will. Make sure you do it to a demo model while nobody is looking because that's not like vandalism or anything.

I suspect some of the "thinness" will be mostly a visual trick, like with the iPad 2. That's not to say it won't actually be thinner, only that I think it's more about aesthetics than that they are chasing millimeters.

Considering even Alienware is just using GTX675M and could run most games fine at 80 FPS on Full HD without setting the whole plastic shell on fire, if Apple could fit this GPU in their top end iMac, the graphic performance should be solved.

Remember GTX675M is still not comparable to true desktop GPU, but honestly 50 FPS in most game is more than enough, even if we all say >60 is better, as I believe the monitor of iMac cannot sync at >60 FPS, and I don't bet they have 2ms response time.

Did I miss the posting of the event invite or is the whole event still a rumor?

I would say it like this: The event itself is still a rumor, and I don't know why everyone is so set on the 23rd. It might be an internal target at Apple, but it would be easy for them to move it by a week or two, if they feel they are not ready.

But what seems to be a sure thing is that Apple will announce some products/product upgrades before the Christmas shopping season begins. Even if there were no rumors coming from various suppliers and "informed parties", it should be quite clear that Apple can't go into the Christmas season with last year's Mac mini and iMac. I never doubted that they'd see an upgrade before December.

Who needs updated iMacs? I'm sure there's some more exciting iOS rumours to be talking about instead. The next iPhone will be out in less than a year after all.

I kid, I remember waiting for what felt like an eternity for the 2011 iMacs and that isn't a scratch on what some of you have had to wait!

The nVidia GPUs have made a huge leap forward this gen. The only thing is that the 27" has such a high resolution that even a 680M 2GB will need to run full blast to game at native. If they do manage to make retina displays (why in god's name, why) then the situation would only get worse. I seriously doubt retina.

Could be. I just had the impression that they have pretty much reached a limit with their current design, and they'd have to do some rearranging of components to break out of this.

However, if the iMac will look like I assume it will, it will have a bulge in the middle and will be strongly tapered towards the sides to make it look thin. This implies that the GPU has to stay in the middle of the logic board, and they have to continue using some heavy copper pipes to move the heat away from it towards the edge (at least I think that's what they do right now). And this kind of design is more limiting than what you can do in notebooks.

I'm not saying it's impossible. Apple has some great hardware engineers. I am just skeptical that Apple is even very concerned about GPU performance.
