I reckon its just a typical spec bump, no major external difference.

Faster cpu, more ram, USB 3 and maybe a 1TB HD as standard?

The nVidia GPUs have made a huge leap forward this gen. The only thing is that the 27" has such a high resolution that even a 680M 2GB will need to run full blast to game at native. If they do manage to make retina displays (why in god's name, why) then the situation would only get worse. I seriously doubt retina.

What I don't mind apple doing for the 27" imacs, is to set the resolution so that images appear sharper and clearer, not smaller. Files appear so comically small that I already have to set all my documents to 200% magnification anyways.

Any way to do this while saving pixels?

Exactly. Apple is using a heatsink design in the iMac which is unlikely to change in newer models and which simply would not be able to deal with very powerful GPUs. I think there is very little room for speculation in terms of additional GPU power. We'll see upgrades, but not major ones.

And let's face it, Apple does not consider Macs to be gaming machines.

But they are used to edit video. With affordable raw video on the horrizon, the high end i-macs still need to be beastly w.r.t. gpus.

Each millimeter makes a difference when the whole thing is less than 10 mm thick.

Sure, but it isn't - the current iMac is more like 7-8 cm. If you mean the iPads I see your point, but then again those are portable devices so actual thinness is more important than on a desktop.

I see your point... Is there already any Thunderbolt adapter for a gpu to connect to my MBA?

Not yet. Hoping one comes along, but not sure it will since Sony was unable to make it successful (they have abandoned that Vaio Z model with the external GPU).

I love that everyone has been complaining about the lack if iMac for months, and now we get an iMac "rumor" and everyone is happy. All the last few iMac posts have really said is that its coming next week and it will be thinner. We still know NOTHING about the new iMac!!

Forgive me to say, people can't game on iMac mostly I think is caused by how they setup the graphic in their games. Running iMac at native resolution with ultra graphic setting and 8 x MSAA are unnecessary. I think "high" settings is more than enough at that resolution.

I always believe "ultra" texture settings are only necessary when you are not at HD gaming, like me gaming on 15" legacy MBP.

Well I have no regrets picking up a refurb 2011 iMac back in July with a company discount too. Couldn't wait any longer and it more than suits my needs.

But am curious to see what this new Mac will include - if it's major upgrades I may sell my refurb but if it's just minor specs I'll keep enjoying what I have.

Finally rumours that started in January are finally coming to reality.

Retina should do this for you. Icons will appear the same physical size but have more pixels so will appear sharper but that depends on how far away from your screen you sit.

I imagine quite a few people feel like this right now.

Well, I think it's gonna be just a little specs bump. It seems that people are still too optimistic about Apple keynotes, although there were no big suprises lately...

Honestly, that's all I'm looking for: "just a little specs bump". I don't care about Retina or thinness or even a redesigned case. I think the iMac is gorgeous as is and if they just update the specs, I'll be happy

Oh yes I meant the iPad. On a desktop though I'd imagine it will be the bigger amount. But as always being thinner does make it look more modern so even just for aesthetic reasons Apple will gladly do it as you said.
