I don't doubt that it's on their mind. But there's also no proof that they feel an urgency to refresh the line until they can revolutionize the product further. That may mean early 2013 with a retina display for all we know.

In my (completely un-informed) opinion:

If we see an iMac update on September 12th, it will be when the store comes online for the purchase of the new iPhone. It will also be a very simple spec upgrade.

If they hold off and have a special announcement (whether that be an event or just a special press release)- it will be a slight redesign.

Honestly, I'm not expecting much. It's clear that the direction of Apple (and the computer industry as a whole, for that matter) is drifting farther and farther away from the desktop computer. Most people prefer a laptop & iPad- though I would side with the majority of you here on this forum...the iPad and iMac make the perfect combination.

So, are we going to see a new iMac? Yeah, it's not going to be discontinued (yet). Will it be insanely great with a dramatic redesign? I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

Remember the last major iMac change?

Late 2009. They moved from the original aluminum models to the current styling with the edge-to-edge glass without an aluminum border. They also dropped the black back for a 'unibody' aluminum design.

That's the same update where they went from 20" and 24" size options to 21.5" and 27" screens.

The same day the 'unibody' polycarbonate white Macbook was released.

No event, it was all just put up on the front page of the website one day.

I don't understand whats pointing out to no iMac in September when all other rumors say otherwise? If its not in September then when do you suggest itd be released and for what reasons ? Don't tell me because the iPhone ? Because that doesn't mean anything only apple knows what they do in their event. To be honest I'm not 100% sure that itd be September I just don't see any other good date ? And the people who's start saying 2013 they are out of their minds nothing points out to 2013 apple went out their way to prove this so apple completely skipping one Whole cycle on the iMac doesn't make sense just because they don't want to showcase it with the iPhone. It makes sense then just for heft holiday season. Stetrain what machine do you currently own?

Wishful thinking at best.

They'll be announcing the new iPhone and the iPad Mini... along with the brandy new iOS 6 on these platforms.

I'm pretty sold on a Octoberish release date for refreshed iMacs. I doubt retina will make it in there but one can only dream right?

Maybe if they make 21" and 24" screens it's a bit more possible. 27" is a stretch. Figuratively and literally. lol

I too have been following the rumor mills fairly closely but they all seem to point towards the END of September or EARLY October.

I think September 12th doesn't fit in either of those categories.

In fact I'd bet that they just might announce the iPhone and iPad Mini on that day along with a release date. Who really knows for sure though.

For me personally I'm going with a refreshed iMac in October.

Screen lamination and anti-glare are two separate issues. I think OP has a point re. screen lamination extrapolated to a significant (not major, but significant at least) redesign. The anti-glare filters available currently do not work (as I understand it at least) with retina (4k) screens. I don't desire a retina screen BUT if Apple is going to launch an iTV, that is the path it has to go so perhaps retina iMac (up to 27") is a nice beta for what is expected to be much larger iTVs. As others have expressed more elegantly elsewhere, nobody believed a rMBP was coming in June but it did. So perhaps is further advanced with retina screens than any of us believe. And it would also explain the delay in launching a refreshed iMac

The mobile GPUs aren't powerful enough to drive a 27 inch screen.

I never said there wouldn't be an iMac update in September. My point is that expecting it to be announced at the September 12th iPhone event is unrealistic.

I would expect it to be released as a website + press release + demo units to reviewers sort of release, either a couple of weeks before or after the iPhone event depending on when it's ready.

The imac could drop at any time between now and the end of the year. One thing is certain. It won't be on the exactr day they announce the iphone etc.

to the people not saying sept 12

we will see... all the pieces to the puzzel are falling into place thats all im saying.. im just saying is not going to surprise me if they come in sept 12. they imacs have been delay for quite sometime now. it could be like people are speculating with the iphone.. announced on the 12 and you can buy it the week of the 23h. apple is being forced to showcase the 2012 imac then because it couldn't be release before. If you think about it from an advertisement... they would put the iphone in front page then two- or three weeks rolls out they would have to cover the iphone with the new imac? which makes less money than the iphone i dont think so.. i think apple would release them together because then they can put the iphone in front an leave it there for the rest of the year and get the imac little banner on the bottom. the only reason why you guys are not saying with the iphone is because ios and mac usually dont mix on events, but like i said before apple is being FORCED to do so.

Theyre not forced to do anything. But I don't understand all this talk about events an iMacs being hid behind an iPhone launch if released simultaneously... I don't think apple thinks marketing the iMac would matter or not... They can release it whenever they want. People don't buy an iMac impulsively and it doesn't need an introduction. People who hold back cash (which cook all ready said in the quarterly earnings that they are aware of) will see the new Mac the second it comes out and order it. And even how fancy a new iMac would become it wouldn't steal any spotlight from the iPhone. It's different products and people put off different money for these. It's not like I buy an iPhone because I'm tired of waiting for an iMac.

iMac won't get any announcement. If its released with the iPhone it wont be mentioned and not advertised. Especially if it's only an spec bump. It will get the new tag the same way Mac pro got one when it got updated. So the release can just as well be the same day as the iPhone or any other day, wouldn't matter.

Let's just hope the update is good enough for them to keep the new tag more than a few days as they did with the Mac pro :)

It's funny how people are so certain about their predictions for iMac releases, are proven wrong, and keep making new predictions with the same amount of certainty.

You're all taking "screen laminating issues" from a single analyst as gospel, and basing an entire product revamp on that one statement. Who even knows if it's true. What do we really know? Nothing. Stop pretending. It doesn't make it any more-true.

This single analyst has been absolutely correct so far this year, so there is no reason to doubt his comments.

im just saying is not going to surprise me if they come in sept 12

That makes one of us. iOS devices and OS X devices simply don't share the same spotlight.

the only reason why you guys are not saying with the iphone is because ios and mac usually dont mix on events, but like i said before apple is being FORCED to do so.

No, in fact, they aren't. They'll space out the releases accordingly. If they can, they'll give iMacs 2-3 weeks before the iOS stuff; if not, it will be 2-3 weeks after.

This, regrettably.

I went to an Apple Store yesterday to buy something unrelated, and asked an employee about the new iMacs just for ****** and giggles. He said "it was just refreshed in January, they increased the max RAM," didn't really know what he was referring to or if I heard it incorrectly.

If everyone that made a wrong prediction went away and never darkened this doorstep again there wouldnt be much traffic on macrumors website. As long as people have well thought out, logical and defendable assumptions, their guess is as good as anyone's. Because lets face it. Few of us have direct contacts with the supply chain to make our assumptions better than anyone else's

Not sure about that...it's been my experience that a lot of Apple store employees are less informed than most people on MacRumors or the like. I was in about a week ago and he had no idea when the iMac was last updated. I asked some questions about the Retina MBP just to be a good customer and he either gave wrong answers or had to look it up.
