iMac to Come in Both Dual-Core and Quad-Core Configs?

another tuesday slowly passes by ...

and another note intel not cutting prices on mobile CPUs and the new CPUs may be delayed :(

it is going to be painfully slow upgrade(s) for next 6 to 18 months ...

Yeah, this sucks... :(

Maybe Apple could revamp the iMac line to use desktop CPU's and not get held back by this.

What Intel said might be delayed are the Nehalem-based chipsets. If you're waiting for those it was not going to be until the end of this year anyway. If iMacs are going to get quad-core now it will be with Penryns, and those have been out for six months.

i see what you mean, but we do not know what apple thinking or what is their plan ...

i upgraded my 2006 Q4 macbook slowly to 2GB RAM (max) : 10.5 : 500Gb HDD : Added 22" LCD : iWork 08 (and keep thinking should have gotten a iMac instead)

i am planning to get iMac next 6 to 12 months; that machine serve me for next 3 to 5 years, so keep on waiting for the good upgrade that will last for few years.

major use is Photoshop and iLife

So its Tuesday  you fan boys are the most pathetic group of people on the face of the earth. While one family might look across the dinner table tonight and say my god another night without enough food for our children all you can think about is a new Mac.

That's a very sad story. I'll give you another one.

Thanks to the buyers of such "high-priced" goods who finance all the jobs at Apple ... Or i give you another one -> with all the taxes (in Europe it's a little bit different) all social program are paid. So no buying and thinking of buying, so hmmm let me think, the worser economy gets ...

Not buying a mac is not going to change that.

The people waiting for this are people who intend to buy. That does not make them "fanboys"

Was not intended to be a sad story and has nothing to do with the economy. Children have been going to bed hungry here in the states for decades. I was only referencing the pathetic mind set of the Apple fan boy.

And i fully agree that this is not acceptable. But calling buyers who spend a lot of money fanbois and offending them is not ok!

Whee.

You obviously don't fit into this category, so why admonish us for not caring?

Um...
a small team of Architects using iMacs can design and document $40mil plus buildings every 6 months. Employing 100's of skilled and unskilled labours. Creating demand in factories. Moving lots of money around the economy.

Think of how many kids those iMacs are feeding.
An Apple are making 10,000 of them.

1,000,000's of children have full bellies thanks to Mac.

Gee you guys are delusional, I see the cult is stronger then ever  funny how the Apple fan base reminds me of the Jim Jones followers.

I really don't get it..

What are people like you doing on a forum discussing SPECIFICALLY Macs, presumably a forum for Mac fans?? Yes?? You obviously have too much time on your hands.. Is it a sin to be a Mac fanboy? Is because of Mac fans that people are impoverished? Please don't be a hypocrite; sell your PC and donate the money to charity, that'll help.. or else, just shut up..

No chance of any new quad core Macs (except Pro, of course) this year. What does everyone think of that?

Better still. We'll happily buy them, because we've been holding off purchases for 'the new model'.

Desktop Macs didn't sell so well last quarter, because Apple is overdue for updates. Holding off on updates creates pent up demand when new machines go on sale... whether they're any good or not.

The MacBooks Pro only got a (real world) speed bump of 20% in October, but they sold like gangbusters...

And 'no iPhone stock a month before iPhone 3G was released' gave Apple as many sales in the first weekend of 3G as the first 2 months of Original.

It will get to the point that it won't matter what Apple puts out, we'll just buy it because it's the latest... Core 2 Duo, 100Mhz faster... We're going to love it. Now if only I could be wrong. :(

To me, Intel spending massive amounts trying to keep up on the tic toc design cycle might signal an end to the basic model of processor development.

Is this the end of Moore's law?

Just a thought.

Not necessarily. Remember, we can go to even bigger on-die cache sizes; I would not be surprised we see L2 cache sizes reaching 16 MB within 2-3 years, which may result in huge leaps in overall performance.

I'm done waiting for crappy hardware only for an OS. Off to buy and I7Core machine. Apple pisses me off with this outdated hardware crap!

Note that Nehalem has 256 KiB L2 caches....

We may see quad-core iMacs, but I'm not putting all my eggs in that basket (or the only-dual-core basket either). I doubt we'll see quad-core notebooks, due to TDP and GHz limitations.

That may have something to do with the redesign.

L3 I think, because Nehalem/Westmere has 256 KB L2 cache/core (512 KB ~ 1.5 MB total) and Sandy Bridge will have 512 KB L2 cache/core (1~4 MB total?). L3 cache I can definitely see hitting 16 MB, since Westmere will have 12 MB L3 on the high-end desktop.
