2TB? With zero redundancy? I'd rather use a drobo or Windows Home Server, thank you. 2TB "backup" storage without redundancy sounds too foolish.

I was under the impression that I could get a 500gb tc and load it up with any drive size I want. Can someone please verify this!!

if you wanna void the warranty and pull it apart--go for it!

Why would I void the warranty, can you enlighten me? Isn't it a simple matter of opening it up and swapping the hd?

Hey guys can someone who's been ther done that with drive swapping in the tc vouch for it pleas??!?!?!

Knowing Apple, they'll probably update to 640 GB and 2 TB. Well best to have low expectations and then not be unhappy later eh? :p

Now I'm glad I didn't rush out and upgrade to the recently bumped "dual band" Time Capsule.

If this is true, then I may just go for it.

Apple needs to set the prices according if, in fact, a 2TB Time Capsule surfaces. Something like...

500GB: $109
1TB: $199
2TB: $299

But knowing Apple this will never happen. :p

I'm guessing the 2TB will run anywhere between $300 and $400.

A 2 TB drive means that your single point of failure is twice as large, and can lose twice as much data.

I'm surprised that Apple hasn't looked at the HP MediaSmart Server and the Drobo, and brought some form of redundant, available storage to their NAS box. These two are great, user-friendly hot-swappable devices (although neither is technically RAID).

It's not such a big deal, RAID 0/1/10 is built into some of the really low end SATA controllers these days.

Yeah, where's the RAID? You'd think that they would have thought of that for the rest of us.

Since 2TB hard drives are three hundred dollars right now, your prices are absolutely impossible.

That's MRSP, not what a hardware supplier would pay. Therefore, while not being impossible, it's unlikely that they'd be priced that way.

You don't understand. Apple makes around 30% profit per item sold. They would never lower their margins to MSRP.

Price to the consumer will need to be the price of an AirPort Extreme plus the standard price of a 2TB HDD, plus enough after that to hit the right margins.

So, you're stating that MSRP has no inherent profit margin?

No, I'm stating that there is no way that Apple would sell something for the cost of just one of its components.

With a Time Capsule, you're going to pay the full end-user price for both the hard drive inside and the AirPort Extreme hardware. Obviously, there are additions to the price on top of just that.

Only RAID will make this thing appealing to me. Yeah, I like storage, but I also like a solid backup of my backup. Anybody agree, or am I nuts?

That's where I am confused. If the MSRP on a 2TB hard drive is $300, which is what you stated. I assume that you stated the consumer retail price that you could purchase a drive for.

Why would Apple pay that price? They'd buy them by the 10 000 or 100 000s and would probably pay half (or less) than you would as an endpoint-consumer.

Like, I said, it's not impossible, just improbable.

They wouldn't. That's the point. Apple pays whatever it pays for drives and whatever AirPort Extreme components cost.

But that's meaningless.

They'll charge us full MSRP for the drive plus the AirPort Extreme in one package.

Yes, but they won't sell to the customer at that price, they have to add on their profit margin to make it worth while.
