I don't see the point of Apple even putting a disk inside the Time Capsule box. Why not just have a FW800 port and let users buy their own disk? Then if you like, hook up a Drobo unit that is stuffed with 1.5 TB SATA drives. Disk drive technology moves quickly.

Again like the HP smartmedia server Drobo is a different market.
Time capsule is the play it in and leave it alone solution.

Drobo is the "it grows with you" solution plus Drobo make the server that can support two drobo devices already where would the value be in competing with them.

Hmm... I was just about set on ordering a 1TB (the price is a bit more then what I wanted). Maybe I will hold out just a bit longer and see... would love to get the 1TB for the price of the 500GB.

Also... does anyone know if the Time Capsule will drastically improve my wireless? I tried using my desktop's iPhoto library from my MacBook Pro and it was painful, I currently have an AirPort Express (x2, one for extending the single and air tunes).

It figures this would happen, I just bought the 500GB yesterday, and have not even opened it yet.

While I think the 1TB is too expensive, I haven't opened the box because I am still wondering if I should have bought it instead. I am only backing up a Macbook and a Macbook Pro with smallish drives (80GB and 160GB). If the 1TB price drops more inline with the current 500GB I'd be very happy.

Looks like Photoshop to me...
It isn't very hard to make something like this...

Maybe 4 TB?

That's pretty good but you should have made it a 4PB, for 4 petabytes.

This is likely to come out very soon. 500GB and 1TB options for backing up a household is too tiny today. The Western Digital 2TB drive is $299, the price of a 2TB Time Capsule would be overpriced like crazy. For some people a 500GB is fine... but a multimedia family would need 2TB. What do you say? Next Tuesday? Would they use the Western Digital Drives you think or "server class"? Remember that gimmick? Anyway, looking forward to next Tuesday.

Does this mean it's going to take 4 days to backup now instead of 2?

Seriously apple, instead of increasing space, how bout make it possible to backup a 100 gb drive in a few hours instead of days...

Obviously you are trying to backup over 802.11n... Duh it's gunna take forever, n is only 108Mbps theoretical, less in real life. Connect to Gigabit Ethernet - much faster.

Now, I don't have a TC - Linksys WAG200G - but I have a WD MyBook 1TB Studio connected via FW800 which backs up very fast IMO. Took 1 hour to backup originally with 180GB data.

i could of sworn n is 300mbps theoretical....

The 2TB Badge Removed

The 2TB badge on the original picture has been removed. It now shows a generic box with no indication of capacity.

As much as I like Apple products and design, I'm afraid the Time Capsule USB port for the addition of a hard drive and use that as NAS. In fact, I did. 1.5TB drive was had from Fry's for $140, $70 for wireless N router, $30 for hard drive enclosure, for grand total of $250 (before tax). It's hidden in a closet and so is never seen, so styling isn't an issue. It is recognized as a Time Machine disk and works seamlessly, all for less than half the cost of Apple's 1TB kit. Of course, if money is no object, by all means, go with Apple.

Still no RAID ?

A 2 TB drive means that your single point of failure is twice as large, and can lose twice as much data.

I'm surprised that Apple hasn't looked at the HP MediaSmart Server and the Drobo, and brought some form of redundant, available storage to their NAS box. These two are great, user-friendly hot-swappable devices (although neither is technically RAID).

It's not such a big deal, RAID 0/1/10 is built into some of the really low end SATA controllers these days.

I don't buy this. Why would Apple update it after it just got updated? They would have just waited until they had 2TB disks to add dual band wifi or up the storage when they upgraded them. Update it and advertise it as new, then update it again? Doesn't make sense. But this would be a good move fore Apple, being that they stayed at their current price. And the 1TB replacing the 500GB.

Well the current 1TB time capsule costs $500, while a 1TB HDD costs $100. Assuming they only use 1 HDD instead of 2 they will have to use the WD 2TB HDD which costs $300, meaning the 2TB Time Capsule would probably be $700. Not worth it to me.

I haven't looked into these in a while. Is it possible to be backing up two computers on the same time capsule yet? One wireless / one wired? Or two wireless?

A 2TB would be pretty nice, simple, and very convenient.

It's always been able to do that. That's part of the marketing, as well. "backup all the macs in your house" or something like that, of course all the macs running leopard. I have 2 iMacs being backed up to my 1TB TC, both of used the gigabit Ethernet for their first back up and have wirelessly backed up since then. Time Machine only backs up the changes in data, not the entire HD every time it backs up.

I also use it as a drag/drop file sharing server for the network. Primarily for older stuff I don't need on a regular basis.

I've read some articles about people moving their iTunes libraries to it, but I'm nervous. My iTunes is currently on a Lacie 500gb drive connected by FW800 to my iMac, but I've been thinking about replacing my iMac with a MBP, and wouldn't want to have to keep a drive connected. Thoughts?

I could easily fill up 2 TB, I've got about 500GB of DVD back ups and my iTunes is about 300GB and I'm very fond of multiple back ups, in fact if I had the money I'd buy 4 more TBs of storage, DVR and DVDs take up quite a bit of room.

yes storage is EASY as to fill up!!! i currently got about 5TB around the house, most of it is used.. i am quite keen to buy a nice 5TB hardware RAID (drools) - but i cant even afford an 80GB HD atm haha

I was under the impression that I could get a 500gb tc and load it up with any drive size I want. Can someone please verify this!!
