to me it would make sense to move all the iphones to the same design, helps get rid of the backend fragmentation also makes the iPhone Se a more desirable position for those who likes smaller phones. The notch can work if the iPhone se has a larger bezel than its bigger brothers.

Steve gives us the iPhone, iPad, etc. Timmy gives us..........another notch. Thanks, Thanks a lot.

I don’t care about Face ID, same form factor with bigger screen would be a dream!

If it is true, it means that the new se won’ t have a design without a bezel.
It will feature a small upper and lower bezel and a notch under the bezel.
So small black borders under the display and above the display. The upper bezel will have a speaker and the front camera, and beneath it will be a notch featuring the faceid.
So a cheaper and smaller lcd version with the new aspect ratio at 4.7 inch, and a small lower and upper bezel with a notch under the upper bezel, faceid, no headphone jack, wireless charging, etc. for about $550.
Perhaps they’ ll have an upgraded “ classic” se with slightly updated specs for about $350 they will launch at the same time as this version.

Perhaps they’ ll do this:
Iphone se (updated specs) for 399
4.7-5.0 inch iphone 9 (the one that has this notch) for 599
6.0 inch iphone 9+ with 6 inch lcd, same design as the 9, but bigger for 749

And the iphone x 2018 line up:
5.8 inch oled for 899
6.45 inch oled for 1049
not sure how you got that it wont be bezel less like the X is from that screen protector.
Apple wont have tons of different models I think they will all go the X route with no bezels thats the design language they are heading. They dont want multiple different models to confuse people more.
They might re-brand this SE phone to be in line with with X if it does have faceId and is just smaller.
They might just eventually have 3 sized X's. Small X,X, XL haha.

They will continue to shrink down the camera housing as much as they can till its gone. Thats the way phone will go

I don't understand why Face ID would drive the price of the SE up "significantly". From what I read the Face ID module costs Apple about $20 each while the TouchID sensor is around $8. Even at Apple's 3:1 markup it would add $35 to the device price. I see no reason why Apple couldn't do an SE2 with a full-screen LCD display and FaceID for $400 and still maintain its margins.

Honestly. I think this is just a cut-out for the speaker. I'd say they moved the speaker closer to the edge... and the screen protector just covers the entire front of the device... doesn't mean that the actual screen will extend this high!
Yep it’s far too shallow for anything but a speaker.

Sketchy claims that Apple's "iPhone SE 2" could boast an iPhone X-esque display apparently refuse to go away, with the latest addition to the rumor pile coming courtesy of Sonny Dickson.

Earlier today the parts leaker posted an image on Twitter of a supposed iPhone SE 2 screen protector that appears to share a similar notch-design to the one Apple uses to house the iPhone X's facial recognition sensors in lieu of Touch ID fingerprint recognition.

SonnyDickson_2018-Jun-01-800x1067.jpg

The comparison shot also shows an actual iPhone X screen protector (right) beside the allegedly leaked one in order to highlight the smaller notch that would presumably be destined for the smaller form factor phone.

Unconfirmed renders and dimensions of the next iPhone SE obtained by MacRumors from casemaker Olixar claim the device will have a length of 4.7 inches and a width of 2.1 inches, making it slightly smaller than the current model but with a larger display thanks to the fuller-screen design. They also suggest the device's notch will be around half as wide as the one on the iPhone X, but the idea that it might house facial recognition sensors still seems far-fetched.

Apart from the technological hurdles that Apple would have to overcome to achieve the unlikely feat, it's hard to imagine that Apple would include Face ID on the iPhone SE at all without hiking up the price significantly. Including the feature on an iPhone that starts at just $349 would reduce Apple's gross margins and risk cannibalizing sales of the iPhone X, which starts at $999.

Those issues put the whole notch-design in doubt, given that the lack of a home button would require some other method of user authentication. Some rival smartphones have recently featured integrated screen fingerprint sensors, but Apple has suggested it won't be following that approach ever since it developed its TrueDepth camera recognition system.

Apple hasn't properly refreshed the iPhone SE since it launched back in March 2016, but it did double the available storage capacities in March 2017. Rumors about an updated model have been contradictory in recent months, but they can be distilled into two camps: one hoping for a iPhone X-like design, and another expecting a minor refresh.

why would the screen protector go over the button at the bottom if it's still the classic design with higher speaker ?

Sonny Dickson still exists?

It’s a screen protector... from a 3rd party... I worked in a phone store an ALL the iPhone 6,7,8 and X protectors were designed with a “notch” to account for the camera & earpiece.

While I have some 6/6s ones without a notch. We didn’t have 5/5s ones with “notches” but it’s just whatever the 3rd part manufacturer decides...it doesn’t indicate much at all.

Just keep the same design, but update the internals. Introducing Face ID on a new SE will certainly hike up the price. The SE is supposed to be a budget iPhone.

there is nothing behind this rumor, it's just a fake screen protector to generate hits for the person who faked it, I won't even click the link

it's FAKE ppl

there is absolutely no way apple is giving us a redesigned SE at this point in time, maybe next year, more likely Spring 2020.

the only thing we might get this year is updated internals in the SE, and that is a very big maybe

Steve gives us the iPhone, iPad, etc. Timmy gives us..........another notch. Thanks, Thanks a lot.

You seem to be forgetting key other "benefits":
  • deprecating ubiquitous features OUT to dongles for no great reasons objective consumers can care about (and not lowering the price for taking such features away)
  • higher prices or "thinner" wallets depending on how one chooses to view price hikes
  • "the most profitable phones" so we can sling around "but who makes the most profitable..." in forum posts, so that our favored company can "win" some contest where it isn't already #1 in some list
  • "best product pipeline ever" statements to persist hope... on and on and on
  • lots of benefits for AAPL shareholders except those that care about corporate debt levels of "their" company (which just keeps going up and up to shocking levels compared to the reign of Jobs when Apple carried no debt)
  • political posturing/campaigns/crusades far removed from the business of Apple
  • an ongoing parade of minor stuff like it's major: watch bands, emoji, etc
  • making it so you can buy a new Mac today and have an antique, classic Mac in the same transaction ;)
However, for all that can be slung against, we consumers generally buy anyway. Cook gets to spin corporate record after record after record. He earns his fat bonus for beating numbers. The press rains praise upon Apple as best-run company. It marches on toward being the first trillion dollar company. If consumers as a group voted with their wallets instead of empty words, real change could be fueled. Otherwise, it's basically a "sticks & stones" proposition.

I hear a lot of people dismissing this because Apple wouldn't put expensive faceID in a low end device.

While I agree with them not putting faceID in this, I don't see why the notch would be dependent on faceID. Apple has shown that they obviously care a lot about having all their device at similar aspect ratios and in general trying to ease the pain of 'fragmentation' as much as possible. I don't see why Apple wouldn't try to standardize the iPhone X aspect ratio and even notch layout across their whole line (regardless of whether or not the device has faceID).

Basically, I think the argument of whether or not it will have faceID and whether or not it will have a notch are mutually exclusive.

Yeah my understanding is that the OLED screen is the single most expensive component in the X. Presumably a new SE wouldn’t go OLED.

Can I add my condolences for all future SE owners on that dreadful notch.

I traded in my first gen SE for Airpods. The screen was just too small and contrast resolution was terrible compared to my 6s.

Man I hope the SE screen doesn’t get any bigger. It will only make it harder to use one-handed which is the whole point of the SE for me. I also prefer having at least one big top or bottom bezel to make it easier to hold in landscape. I had to hold my phone in landscape while walking yesterday and if I didn’t have the bezel it would not have felt nearly as comfortable and secure. I also hope it doesn’t lose Touch ID for Face ID. I’m sure Face ID works fine, but I don’t like the idea of facial scanning. It seems too invasive. I don’t even like cameras always pointed at my face which is why the front cameras on my devices are all covered up.

Basically, the SE design is perfect as is. Just want internal updates.

There’s like a one percent chance of this being true. We’re getting another phoned in “5s update”, maybe with an A11 if we’re “lucky”, A10 if we’re not.
