Did you watch the March 2016 Keynote when the SE launched? Greg Joswiak stated they introduced the SE to be an “Affordable” entry-level iPhone with a 4 inch form factor. In order to make it that way, they didn’t include all the latest technology, which also made it affordable for other countries where the higher iPhone models are exorbitant in price.

I hear you and get it from Apples standpoint, but how great would it be to have a high end small form factor smartphone? There is a niche market that literally no maker is serving. They would have zero competition at that size and high specs. The real question is what is the size of that market and is it big enough to carry this kind of product? Personally I'd love a it. I find the X a bigger then I like.

A size in between the regular a iphone 8 and SE would be amazing! But will never happen. One handed use is always boss!

Sketchy claims that Apple's "iPhone SE 2" could boast an iPhone X-esque display apparently refuse to go away, with the latest addition to the rumor pile coming courtesy of Sonny Dickson.

Earlier today the parts leaker posted an image on Twitter of a supposed iPhone SE 2 screen protector that appears to share a similar notch-design to the one Apple uses to house the iPhone X's facial recognition sensors in lieu of Touch ID fingerprint recognition.

The comparison shot also shows an actual iPhone X screen protector (right) beside the allegedly leaked one in order to highlight the smaller notch that would presumably be destined for the smaller form factor phone.

Unconfirmed renders and dimensions of the next iPhone SE obtained by MacRumors from casemaker Olixar claim the device will have a length of 4.7 inches and a width of 2.1 inches, making it slightly smaller than the current model but with a larger display thanks to the fuller-screen design. They also suggest the device's notch will be around half as wide as the one on the iPhone X, but the idea that it might house facial recognition sensors still seems far-fetched.

Apart from the technological hurdles that Apple would have to overcome to achieve the unlikely feat, it's hard to imagine that Apple would include Face ID on the iPhone SE at all without hiking up the price significantly. Including the feature on an iPhone that starts at just $349 would reduce Apple's gross margins and risk cannibalizing sales of the iPhone X, which starts at $999.

Those issues put the whole notch-design in doubt, given that the lack of a home button would require some other method of user authentication. Some rival smartphones have recently featured integrated screen fingerprint sensors, but Apple has suggested it won't be following that approach ever since it developed its TrueDepth camera recognition system.

Apple hasn't properly refreshed the iPhone SE since it launched back in March 2016, but it did double the available storage capacities in March 2017. Rumors about an updated model have been contradictory in recent months, but they can be distilled into two camps: one hoping for a iPhone X-like design, and another expecting a minor refresh.

Do. Not. Want.

The iPhone SE does not need to be “refreshed”. The point of it is “why mess with a classic?” If it ain’t broke, WHY FIX IT? Here’s how to improve the iPhone SE: lower the price. Already did that? Okay, lower it some more.

Apple’s new motto should be: “it ain’t broke. We can fix THAt!!!”

Honestly. I think this is just a cut-out for the speaker. I'd say they moved the speaker closer to the edge... and the screen protector just covers the entire front of the device... doesn't mean that the actual screen will extend this high!
If there's no Face ID that would imply the Touch-ID sensor is flush with the face of the device, which I think would be a non-starter. Lots of potential misses when trying to scan your fingerprint if there's no indent for your thumb to find.

Why is so much speculative nonsense passed off as “news” here?
It's called "MacRumors" for a reason.

I would love to pay a high price for some of the same features as the flagship model as long as it comes in the SE form factor.
When you say high price, do you mean the flagship price until 2016, this is, 650$, or the flagship price of 2017, this is, 1000$?

Because I won't be paying 1000$ for an iPhone, or any other smartphone. That's a notebook price.

I can't understand why manufacturers keep making tall smartphones vs standard ratio 16:9 phones, is same importan wide than tall in portrait mode, and is a no sense the extra tall screen in landscape.

1- ALL text on iPhone 6 looks same size on iPhone X, no matter the super new extra tall screen you have, because they have similar wide size
2 - most of games and videos are 16:9 ready, so again, no matter how super tall your screen is. it's going to look as big as the smaller lenght of your screen, again, same size of iPhone 6 (with black bands at both sides)
3- 99% of pictures are 4:3 ratio, 1% 16:9 ratio, so again, useless super tall iPhone X screen in both portrait or landscape

so, iPhone X super tall screen is super good for nothing, is just a PITA because it is taller than most of my pockets! and doesn`t add nothing really big to watch than my old iPhone 6, aside more rooms for apps icons

What would be awesome is a 16:9 iPhone with the size of the iPhone SE (so it would be a bit wider, but same tall), wide enough to have text same size iPhone 6/7/8, tall enough to wathc videos at same size than iPhone X

total win

Why do we always have to talk about the SE as a "discount" device?
I would love to pay a high price for some of the same features as the flagship model as long as it comes in the SE form factor.

Because people love to assume what others prioritize. Cough cough too much unecessary thinness cough too much minimalism cough cough the magic feel is gone Jony cough cough.

I need a new phone. Tried a 6s and hate the size and the design flaw of the new on/off button (why? why was it moved? why?). What's the latest yinz think about the SE 2? Does it have any life or should I just buy an SE and be done with it for a few years?
