No - those new dimmer keys (on F5 and F6) ARE for a backlight. The monitor brightness is controlled by the brightness keys on F1 and F2...

So: this keyboard SHOULD have a backlight!

Ah, good point! That's weird though, it wouldn't really work well though with white keys - similar to the PowerBook / MacBook Pro with silver keys. In dim light (other than complete darkness) it made it harder to read because the silver keys themselves reflected light fairly well.

I'd probably buy it though.. Although I'd prefer a wired version with big cursor keys and 10-key if they make one.

Isnt that exactly what the news is?

How I interpreted it was that they are backlight CONTROL keys for the backlit keys on a MacBook model which has them, not for the wireless keyboard keys itself. The article is slightly ambiguous, and could do with some disambiguation... couldn't it?

lit keys don't necessarily assist with typing accuracy. Especially if you're a touch typer.

What they do assist with is placement of the keys and items. if you can't even make out where the keys are, in a dark room, ti's hard to get started with typing. backlit keys just help with object recognition and let you get started with hand placement easier.

A much simpler solution Is a couple bumps on the home row like you'll already find on most keyboards.

Have they figured out how to build a keyboard/magic touch pad with a built in rechargeable battery that can be plugged in when needed?

I prefer using the rechargeable batteries from my Apple battery charger than having to plug it in to charge.

to some extent yes, this is enough.

but in adarkened room using a non standard sized keyboard, I find it sometimes difficult to get myself on the homerow properly without a quick glance.

I wish Apple would release a wireless keyboard with trackpad integrated, same layout as on the laptops.

Basically the new MacBook without the screen and computer.

That'd be sooo sweet.

I hope they release it soon! I've been holding off on buying one, and this will be the perfect reason to finally get one. The backlit keys will be worth the $10 jump in price if it's indeed true.

Surprised it's taken this long to do.
Did they assume that the light from the computer screen would illuminate the keyboards enough for their desktops? Backlit keyboard has been such a strong feature in the Macbook Pro for so long.

Hopefully in spacegrey and gold as well to match the new MacBook! ;)

The “power” doesn’t necessarily switch the computer on or off. It could be used for standby and hibernate.

Has anyone confirmed that this actually exists, and not a photoshop mistake?

Still no full sized keyboard with number pad.....
This is still my biggest gripe; I'm actually currently using a Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic keyboard as an alternative, of course some of the keys don't match the layout I'm actually using, but it's as comfortable to type on as the Apple wireless keyboard, and well made.

Not that I'm too bothered about the ergonomic layout (though I'm now used to it), but of the six or so full-sized wireless keyboards I've tried, it's by far the best made. The rest have all had too much flex, or unpleasant keys.

That said, I'd switch to a full-sized wireless aluminium from Apple in a heartbeat; I love the feel and quality of the current wireless keyboard, but the layout just makes it too much of a compromise.
