Did anyone note the screen size? I guess if it was in a 3G case then the screen size would have to be the same as the 3Gs iPhone. I was actually hoping for a 4.3" screen like that of the HTC HD2. I've held that phone in my hand and the larger screen, and thus larger virtual keyboard feels pretty good to me. I'd love it if the new iPhone 4G was a 4.3" as well.

The word has been that Apple wouldn't increase the actual screen size but increase the pixel density.

Soooo many people are sooooo very very critical lol.. Does the phone look Apple-like? Well no. But geez, its not the most hideous phone anyone's ever seen. If it actually turned out to be the next iPhone.. after commercials flaunting it in front of the white background, a video of J. Ive talking about how revolutionary it is with his english accent, and the fact that we have a new Apple device... most of these people talking about how ugly it is will be buying it and posting about how it's a lot nicer looking in person.

These posts by people saying that if this product had actually come from Apple, people on this site would be falling all over themselves to say how beautiful it was are hilarious. I think the type of Apple fans on this site are also some of its harshest critics. Sure, there are some blatant apologists, but it seems like every tiny detail or problem is bitched about in great detail.

The reality is that Apple has some of the best industrial design out there at this moment. They don't make the cheapest products or the most technically advanced ones, and they still screw up some times, but it's design, not marketing, or legions of brainwashed fanboys, that keeps them in the position they are in.

I've said it earlier in this thread - I would buy the 3GS instead of this if this was the actual design. It looks like a bad Nokia or SE device. I would be embarrassed to use this device in public because of how it looks. That's how badly designed this knock-off is.

I don't care if it was blessed with unicorn piss I would still think it's an ugly device.

in the previous pics they showed the mother board and the battery ect.. and that told me it was fake because i highly doubt apple would let one of these go, ok occasionally they let a prototype go but they have a different color circuit board so i dismissed it entirely

I was waiting for this news! It's a shame that so many user (on Engadget) had believed to such a horrible design.

Jonathan Ive is one of the best industrial designer in the world, He will never design something so ugly.

Agree. Engadget knows that any news about Apple will start a flame war between fanbois and haterz. Which spikes their web traffic, which is good for them. Even news about non-Apple gadgets spawns fanboi/hater threads.

And yeah, the pix are actual photos of a real something, but that something is not an Apple product. Looks like what Sharp or Toshiba would do to clone an iPhone. Or what Palm could have done in, oh, 2005 or so. But didn't. Good riddance to Palm.

The killer is that it's never shown booted. The guy who planted it in that bar in San Jose must have done a bait -n- switch. He showed an actual iPhone 3GS, in a case, running iPhone OS 3. Then he "dropped" this fake iPhone in a similar case. The original story said it was in a current-gen iPhone case.

Actually, no.

Apple's industrial design has been generally excellent since day one. However, when they screw up, the die-hard Apple fans are the most critical ones and it shows in the (bad) sales.

I can remember...
Mac Color Classic
Performa 5X0
eMac
The original round iMac mouse
Motorola ROKR
Many Powerbook models which I don't even remember the model number. I think 1400, 3XXX and 5XXX
eMate

Even well designed one may have bad sales due to cost...
PowerMac Cube

I figured as much when the back cover was off. I love apple. But for some reason I just feel that will never happen

Verizon will get the ugly a$$ iPhone while at&t will retain the good looking sleek ones. :)

There was NO way Apple would make a phone like that. C'mon who really believed it? Just admit it :)

Come on, this picture is obviously photoshopped. Apple would never create a design like this, I agree, but this photo isn't real either. Look at the bottom right corner for one example, the color from his finger is leaking onto the phone. And why wouldn't it be turned on? This picture is an obvious FAKE.

I loved my 1400. I thought it was great.

Is anyone else looking closely at this photo? If this proves it's a fake, why is it so OBVIOUSLY photoshopped? I was taken aback by the uncharacteristic design when I first looked at the engadget pics, but after looking closer I can see a few cues that it might actually be an apple product. The glass going to the edge is very imac like, and the speaker and mic holes look quite like the ipads. I'm not saying it's genuine, but I'll hold out on calling these photos fake for now.

Oh, and if you look closely, the circle from the home button has been really badly recreated. It is far from a perfect circle. This person had to black out the reflection from the other picture, then try to put the circle back on. And is now laughing as he's/she's watching all these replies.

Glad it proved to be a fake. Now I can get back to looking forward to the new phone. :)

Haha knew it. That's funny how everyone was screaming ITZ A PROTOTYPE!!!!111!111!!!!!! When you brought up things that didn't add up or make any sense.

It's a cheap fake sold in Akihabara amongst othe places.

I visited Tokyo this New Year's and saw this exact phone. It's a cheap made of plastic fake. With something that looks like a windows version of iphone OS!
It cost 6000 yen at the shop I saw it. Pretty cheap if U ask me.
:p
