Looks like Apple is going retro with modern twist.

Likely the new MacBook Pro and iMac 27 will come in more professional colours like black or space grey to differentiate the line like they used to. It provides a clearer definition between products targeted at general consumers and those aimed at professionals.

Similar to how they used to make MacBooks out of polycarbonate and the professional line out of aluminium/titanium.

This is what I am hoping and they also discussed this on the latest Upgrade podcast. However, there was fear that this new MacBook would start at $1199 or $1299 and the M1 MacBook Air would stick around at $999 and then Apple would be in the same boat it was with the original MacBook - few people bought it because the MacBook Air was good enough and it was cheaper. So I am hoping Apple kills off the M1 MacBook Air and just has this anchoring the bottom - maybe with M1 for $999 and M2 for $1099.

And it would allow Apple to go back to the old "Consumer / Professional" product matrix: "Consumer" is iPhone / iPad Air / iMac / MacBook (Air) with multiple color options and "Professional" is iPhone Pro / iPad Pro / iMac Pro / MacBook Pro with fewer color options and better components.
In the interim possibly that will happen, but I think ultimately this is destined to be the $999 entry model, fitting with the iPad Air and 24” iMac as you say. I think a problem that hamstrung the MacBook wrt pricing was the custom terraced battery design, that has to have added quite a bit to the cost?

I wonder if they will offer a space grey/ black bezel option for this model - if it replaces the Air and cheapest Pro they really need to cater to all tastes as it will be carrying a huge chunk of Mac sales, so they don’t have the leeway for divisive colour choices as they do with the more niche iMac.

The colors have grown on me, I get the marketing behind it. Also, the replacement of rubberfeet is sleek as hell, very much enjoying this new design process. Can´t wait for that design with a revamped M1X/M2.

This will be the new MBA. And it will be far lighter than the current Air. Right now the MBA and MBP are extremely close in weight. Meanwhile LG has their Gram laptop at 2.2 lbs with a 14" screen. I believe this machine will retain the 13.3" screen and be far lighter than the current Air.

(Side note, this article is not showing up for me on my iPhone or iMac via Safari or Chrome. I just happened to find it because a friend emailed it to me. So strange....)

Not a fan of this look at all:

Looks like someone just put some large Command Strips on the back and is about to mount it to the wall, lol! I don't understand the point either. I've never had any issues with the classic 4 separate circular rubber feet.

But the rest looks great!

If they offered a space grey version with black bezels and keys, I wouldn't mind. But I hate that no matter what colour you get you'll need to deal with the white bezels and keys. Looks really cheap imo.
As to the bolded part, are you concerned about what other people would think if you had a Mac as pictured?

I understand not everyone will like the design and that is fine but, saying it looks cheap just because of the different color doesn't seem practical to me, especially when we know the CPU is built to conquer.

I know they won’t do it but I want these colours with the new macbook pro so bad. At least give us one new colour, like a blue. Ideally I’d have the AirPods Max pink colour on the MBP but that’ll never happen :(

Why are the ‘pro’ products always so boring.

If dropping the wedge design - effectively merging the Air and Pro - perhaps this will just be called MacBook instead of MacBook Air? The Air’s wedge design is too iconic to break with, really. We saw the same with retaining the iMac chin.

White keyboard isn’t a good call IMO, in certain lights the backlight can make it difficult to see the key masking, not to mention the grime. Good to have one TB4 port either side if you can only have two though!
I hope they don’t drop the wedge design. I wonder if they do though, would the Air be heavier? I like my current MBP but I’m not a fan of the weight after using an 11” Air for so long before upgrading.
