It checks to see if the email address is associated with a device compatible with iMessage.

actually I created a email address specifically for iMessage I can disable it whenever I feel like it.

But I understand your concern.

yes I had observed this this morning in a group chat with people being in meetings and university classes.

people need to realize that we all have bounderies with iMessage and people should respect that.
