I don't see how that would work either? if the ipad is on a table it won't be moving?

I don't know... I pondered this as well, but it was said during the keynote for iPad 2.

EDIT: This is from the Engadget iPad 2 keynote coverage:

10:53AM There's a toggle for the sustain pedal. "Another thing about a piano is that you can play with dynamics... the sound is different when you tap softly or with force. How do we do that? With the accelerometer."

Ok, quick go on original ipad + Garageband. iRig works (think amplitude might need to lower their prices for their apps!). Akai LPK25 USB keboard + camera connection kit works. This is going to be fun!

Thanks. I can't wait to use my irig with it tonight. I'll cancell my Apogee Jam order too.

GarageBand: Holy cow it has at least one thing that even Logic Pro doesn't have: an easy to use one touch-button arpeggiator (I hope this is a sign of things to come for desktop products!)

There's still movement. Maybe not much, but it's the acceleration (hence: "accelerometer") that's important. The thing has a non-flat back, so it will rock some. The table will give a bit, etc. With enough sensitivity this can be detected and applied.

I hope you'r right, GarageBand looks awesome, but the UK wont get iPad 2 till the end of the month. And I want to play it!

He's right. Apple's GB iPad page lists compatibility with both iPads.

The iMovie thing is a camera thing, not a performance or RAM thing. People who got review copies of iMovie had to install it on original iPad since the 2 isn't out yet. They reported it worked fine, maybe got a tiny bit sluggish working on big projects doing things requiring intensive processing. Apparently it's something of a hassle to get raw video, or transfer projects from iPhone iMovie, into an iPad for use in iMovie without taking the video with iPad itself. To transfer from iPhone you have to have the camera connection kit. It works, but it's an extra part, extra purchase, you have to have an iPhone 4 (or presumably 3GS, though video quality is not nearly as good as a 4), etc. Defies the simplicity of Apple's products.

Third-party cameras, even with camera connection kit, there are format compatibility issues with iMovie for iOS. So, basically, no camera on an iPad, it's a very un-Apple process to insure you can get video in. You can't transfer iMovie projects to or from Mac OS X version of iMovie. If you could do that, I expect they would have made iMovie for iOS certified for original iPad.

But GarageBand, no worries w/ original iPad. It works. Fine. Apple-certified fine.

And about the arpeggiator. Wow. That's always been a hassle with Logic. You either have to have the arpeggiator built into your USB input device, or arpeggiate after you record, unlike Reason or whatever. So that's very cool. That said, I'm not buying it because I'll just use it to waste time and I have enough distractions already. When my kids are old enough for iPads, I'll buy it.

GarageBand needs a piano roll, as it's far too easy to fat finger it when recording keyboard parts.

Of course, I'm looking for Logic on the iPad, and that's probably daft. :)

I have Garageband running on my iPad, and it performs very well. Excellent response (no lag anywhere), loads of different instruments, looks beautiful.

I can see this is a very polished App, well done Apple! (1 glitch, hit the high-hat and the floor drum animates too, whoops!)

GarageBand on my iPad 1 is pretty amazing. I've only played with the instruments so far, but for £2.99 you can't go wrong. Great fun.

So I downloaded Garageband on my iPad 1 plugged in my Strat with a Griffin GuitarConnect cable and it works great!! I think apple has just blown away all competition in this area. I was pissed when I found out how expensive iShred and amplitude were for effects. Well thanks Apple because those are now obsolete.

I love the set up on the iPad it's easy to use and the effects and amp packages are easy to access. GREAT job.:)

If you like playing electric guitar go buy this now!!

You can set the keyboard to have larger keys--use the button with the keyboard icon on it on the right hand side. I was fat fingering the heck out of it until I changed it.

(not sure what you mean by "piano roll" unless you're talking about the old-timey player piano rolls :)

GarageBand is one of favourite apps on the mac - the iPad version is pleasingly wonderful. Leaving this running in Apple Stores will probably sell loads of iPads on its own, especially at such a fantastically good value price.

Edit: I'm not so fussed about iMovie, but I'm sure it's disappointing that it's iPad 2 only for many... it's a shame in a way, that this story couldn't be split in separate threads, because GarageBand deserves every 'Positive' vote and iMovie will probably cause most of the 'Negative' ones...

Also, to confirm again for anyone wondering, I just tried my guitar and iRig on iPad GarageBand, it works great.

A piano roll editor in the 8-track layout section of GarageBand. I don't have the app yet, but I didn't see an editor for midi information on the track view (just move and trim functions).

If it's not in this version, I have faith that it'll be in a future version.

Amazing app

Garageband is amazing; both a great instrument and a great toy. I'm really surprised to see the sampler in there; hadn't seen that mentioned in the reviews i'd read. I'm imaging going back in time twenty years and describing to my younger self the $4.99 app that will do what $10,000 worth of equipment couldn't do back them.

One thing that I'm surprised I don't see is airplay out for Garageband. It'd be nice to hear what I'm playing through the stereo, long as I have an aTV2 and all.

Not a bug. A one finger hit on the high hat will also trigger the kick. Two finger the high hat and the kick wont be triggered.

Most times you want both together, so that makes sense.

That's true, but even fixing timing mistakes needs an editor.

Piano roll is the name given to standard MIDI editors in modern sequencers. Essentially a vertical piano keyboard on the left side, and time along the top. Now put a blob at the grid location matching the key and time you want, and you have the idea. They're called piano rolls because the grid looks a lot like the classic piano roll sheets you're referring to.

I hope so. With a little integration between this and the desktop version, I could see this hitting the level of utility offered by the Pages app, rather than just being an improbably cool toy, which it more or less is now.
