With so many good and inexpensive media players/streamers nowadays why would anyone buy an AppleTV?
Because for the money it is still one of the best players available. Unless you are talking about a PlayStation 3 or XBox 360 you aren't going to find a cheaper or similarly priced media player that has all of the same features as the Apple TV (built-in HD and WiFi, support for purchased online content, deep support for podcasts, YouTube, Flickr) and all with a very nice and user-friendly UI.

If you just want to play "ripped" content then there are cheaper options, but not everyone is wanting to do that (in fact, I'd say that the people who are ripping their own content are in the VAST minority of potential users).

Inconvenient?

That content was also on his mac, so all he had to do was re-sync the Apple TV. An inconvenience, but not a huge problem

I am glad this works for you , really, but I just love how so many people here are saying Oh well I'll just re-sync... thanks Apple for addressing this so quickly...

Well God dammit, it took my two :apple:TVs 27 hours to re-sync the 82GB of content the last time I had a problem and Apple smilingly told me to just re-sync!

And now under 3.01 both :apple:TVs keep mysteriously stopping 15 minutes or so into the re-sync and I have to jump start the syncing again! Looks like I have a very long babysitting job now.

A little more than inconvenient! Apple had better damn well provide some compensation. :(

Apple has more updates(fixes) and security updates these days than Microsoft.

Makes me wonder?

Are you kidding? That's so very far from true. I have XP and Windows 7 and get updates every week. At the very least I get one anti-malware update a week.

This is not a data loss issue so everyone needs to calm down.

And throws another curve ball in the Palm Pre iTunes sync, and just as Palm was going to come out with their WebOS fix from the Apple TV 3.0 release... :D

Compensation? What do you want, a free tub of popcorn? It's not the end of the world...

If it took you 27 hours to resync two AppleTVs, then it sounds like you have a problem with your network.

Are you being sarcastic?
Nope.
If not check out mpcclub.com to see some real media players.
I guess there is a lot of choice, I suppose my point is the :apple:TV is not un-reasonably priced for a product made by a well known big name brand (especially from refurb), and it does all that a lot of people want it to do. For people that want an easy to use player, that doesn't require a lot of messing on the computer it's perfect, especially as more people get used to buying content from iTunes, as that's what we already know from using our iPods.

Apple has never been bug free, I'm not surprised to find a new set of recent bugs. We'll see more bugs with more people adopting a Mac within their regular PC mix too, which will again not surprise me.

I didn't get that email. Buggers.

Is this a fix for the problem where you select an item to play, and the ATV reboots itself?

My wife told me yesterday all data was gone from the ATV, so when i got home from work i checked and it was indeed gone. I had to unconnect and reconnect the computer to resync and then today i received the email and updated.

Am I the only one here who was using the ATV standalone?

I just lost over $200 worth of content. Do I have any recourse?

The Apple TV always seem to be so buggy.

I wish Apple would care a bit more about it. It could be a wonderful product. When it works it really is a great way to watch my iTunes media.

recently i have not even been able to watch trailers for the movies without waiting about 3 minutes for it to start.

otherwise, XBMC works great on the appleTV for all of my network content. and boxee just keeps getting better and better - but still not ready for prime-time just yet - still it has a beautiful interface.

Had to resync 170GB and couldn't remember anything I did on my end to trigger it. Oh well. s**t happens. Glad they caught it quickly. Even over 5GHz "n" it took a looong time.

It was mostly an annoyance, since I could still stream all my media, if necessary. No real down time, except I needed to keep my MBP "up all night" for sync/stream.

I love my ATV and don't understand the "hobby" reference at all. It is an easy to use and nearly automatic device, quite unlike a model helicopter or something hard to use. It does a lot, I think, and does it well.

Anyway, for that plug Apple should have sent me an email. I got it refurb from them. Only heard of the update here, by chance.

I received the e-mail but it looked like a phishing e-mail, didn't come from apple.com, and Mail.app marked it as spam. Apple needs to do better than this at notification.

What exactly did you think the email was phishing for?

came from iTunes Store <discover@newmusic.itunes.com>

wasn't marked as spam in my mail app.

Wow! OSX Snow Leopard killing data when using the guest account and Apple TV 3.0 data loss. Get your act together Apple.

Glad to know Apple tries to fix bugs as fast as possible.

Talk to the Mac OS team, not Apple TV team. They are separate and release separate updates.

Been an Apple user since jan/04 and I have never seen so many miscues on updates. Whats up Apple?

Ya I have to say this is a little unsettling. I'm glad they are fixing it quick in this case, not so quick with guest accounts on OS X, but these kinds of mistakes should NOT be happening PERIOD!

I'm STILL trying to download the update. Been trying since 6pm last night. It downloads about half of it, and then stops and gives a message that it cannot download the update, try again later.

Ouch... I'm sure Apple has thought of those people since they pitched that the tv can be used without a PC/Mac synced to it.

Give them a call. 1 (800) 275-2273

They better be giving you your purchased content back.

P.

...guess Apple cares more about your TV shows than your computer data.

(there must be a joke about the typical Apple user hidden within the line of text above!)

burning the oil on the weekend to save your TV shows...hopefully Apple is also working weekends to fix the hundreds of bugs to this "performance upgrade" of an OS!

hey, I am a fanboy too, but come on Apple, update your buggy OS already.

They are working on it, there have been no less than 5 developer seeds of 10.6.2 all fixing 150+ bugs. Obviously they are doing very thorough testing before releasing because with a bug like that you have to ensure it is fixed before letting it lose on the public.
