Terrific thread and very interesting too!

My question is: why did Apple put in that lighter swirling ribbon highlight across the default dock? Looking at people's "dark glass" dock versions without the ribbon, they look really really good - the icon reflection is still there, the 3D depth is still there, but the bizzare ribbon (some kind of mad pseudo light source highlight?) is history.

Well done. I'd used Terminal to switch to the 2D dock but I might create a "dark glass" 3D dock this weekend.

here it is without the sides, which is part of what I think was making it look strange, but tell me what you think

looks better but there is still a hole of 1 or 2 px between the actual the dock and the behind thingy . but good work!!

I wonder if we could substitute the old black triangles from Tiger for the indicators?

Anyone who's still on Tiger want to check this out?

Thought I'd jump on the bandwagon and have a go myself.
Unfortunately it didn't turn out how I expected, I think I should have opted for lower resolutions as the pixel density is too high in certain places meaning the actual surface is obscured. I used a scan of a mahogany table for the texture.

i'm going to check this.

EDIT: I searched but i haven't found anything of black triangels.

this is an amazing find!
i cant wait till i have leapord so i can make my own custom docks!
and with the triangle, why would you have to look into tiger for it?
just make a triangle with photoshop, not that hard!

Though this sounds cool, I'm going to wait for a stable third-party application to do this for me. Risky system file alteration in Leopard is not my cup of tea. :D

Can anyone write an automator script for this (for those of us that hate tinkering with terminal commands)? Or is this not possible because you need to download specific images?

Someone has the same "problem" like me? After changing the scurve* files I've got a white line on the bottom of the dock: (it's definitley NOT the reflection ;) )

It's not annoying but I wonder if this is removable?

you also need to change 'frontline.png'

I am in awe of all the wonderful Docks people have made & been kind enough to share.

Many Thanks

So how do you make the files that change the dock?

Cheers

Man, I'm an idiot....I can't seem to figure out the correct terminal commands to replace the scurve (& dashboard & finder icon) images... Somehow I was able to change the indicator, but no joy on the other items. Guess I'll have to wait for a 3rd party haxie or something.:(
