A few things to mention:

- The BLACK 3D Dock actually looks easier to see and better for your eyes than the default one!

- It probably won't be long until someone makes an App that can do this with downloadable themes and everything!

- Has anyone figured out a way to change the background opacity of the 2D Dock (the one from the side)?

This is the MOST customizable Dock ever Apple has ever made... even more customizable than Jaguar (was it Jaguar that has the background image tile or was it pre Jaguar... can't remember). Anyways, this really is the most customizable Dock yet!

That's all I wanted to say.

It would be interesting for someone with Time Machine to give a quick test and see if you can easily restore those files.

-First make sure Time Machine has captured your modification
-Open Finder
-Goto the folder the files are in
-Launch Time Machine and go back in time to see if the originals were backed up
-Try reversing that and put back the modified files with Time Machine

I'm gonna try that tonight when I get home (if i can break myself away from Guitar Hero 3!).

I don't get why people want to get the triangles back. Sure they were simple and to the point... but the whole theme of Leopard is futuristic and space-like. The little blue orbs aid in that atmosphere, and I like them.
I know everyone has their own preference.... but be more open to a little change in your lives, people

Perhaps you could try being more open to people who have different opinions to you. Or do you expect everyone to accept everything that happens in life without question? You accuse others of being close-minded, but seem to be blissfully unaware that you're just as bad.

Great stuff i cant wait to get home to try this out thanks all who posted and made the graphic files.

a red semi transparent Dock
Looks good on a real dark background

I had the same thought, so I opened up time machine, navigated to the Dock in core services. I cant right click on it. So i dont know how else to do it.

when you guys say right click on it, how do you right click. I only have one clicker, i've been going into folder options to get to it, but everyones saying right click

shift+apple+4

It will give you the crosshairs. Click and hold mouse button, drag to whatever size you like, let go. A camera shutter will sound and a new picture file will be on desktop.

edit - shift+apple+3 takes a full screen shot in case you didnt know. IDK how familiar you are with mac/osx.

I did not know any of that. Thank you!

So I used the terminal command to get rid of the 3d dock, how do I get it back?

I used Time Machine, worked perfectly. Now all the original files are restored. Slightly annoyed however because I changed the dock about 6 times within one hour so obviously time machine didn't have a chance to backup each change therefore I'm stuck with either the latest dock iteration or the original.

I've opted for the original however I might change at a later date.

note: Just like in Terminal I was prompted to enter the administrator password after restoring the originals.

Which file did you restore? Can you be more specific. Did you restore the /core services/Dock? i could not get into the resources folder for the Dock.

Is there anyone that could round off the corners on the dock? Since the menus are all rounded, Id like to see a dock with rounded edges. And if you dont know what Im talking about, the corner to the left of Finder and right of the trash can.

I made the shelf a little higher. It's still not perfect, but it will do for now. I actually like using it. With some kind of nature background it makes the whole desktop seem kind of zen. I think orange indicator lights would look good as well.

Here are the files in case anybody wants to use it or experiment with it. If you use it post some screenshots!! :)
very nice! thanks for letting us experiment with your files :)

That looks really good! Goes well with your desktop. I've been using the same dock but with orange lights, and the default bamboo desktop. It's surprisingly usable.

I tried a version like that. Didn't really look that great. It killed the perspective effect. I also tried a version where the whole dock was a semi-circle, which also looked terrible.

I think Apple got the dock pretty close to perfect. My only complaint, and the reason why I started experimenting with mine is that I didn't like the wavy highlight they added. I can understand why they did it (it adds more of a sense of perspective and matches the whole aqua aesthetic). But it reduces usability and covers up the cool reflections.

Here's the file for a rounded dock.

Rock On!

Great thread, sad to get to the end!

Quick question:

How hard would it be to create something (a script?) to change the dock ever 5, 30, 60 minutes? Similar to the alternating desktop?

Im starting to learn apple script and looking for a neat project!

Thanks!

Just wanted to say hats off to you guys for cooking these up...I love some of these!!!

Modded my dock to a "dark glass" variant this morning - still looks a little light to me. Anybody have any translucent black glass variant pngs they want to share? I'm not very good with Photoshop and have no idea how to make transparent images or what settings to use.

As an aside, although I backed up the default pngs I replaced frontline.png without copying the original out. Can someone post up a link for the default frontline.png, if I want to switch the dock back to default?

Cheers!
