There is no In-n-Out anywhere near Chicago. But I go to one anytime on the West Coast. The burgers are really good....but not so amazing that I see why people go crazy over it. The secret sauce is what makes In-n-Out burgers good. A Five Guys actually opened very near me. I found absolutely nothing amazing their burgers either. Ho-hum, actually. Their hot dogs are nasty. Their cajun fries are great, though.

I would say, In-n-Out is much better, then.

In-N-Out totally rocks. Too bad there aren't any in Colorado.:(

Five Guys isn't bad, but given the choice I would choose In-n-Out every time.

I voted for In-n-Out not only because they are good, but because of the Secret Menu altogether.

HOWEVER...

Make a trip to Reno, and you'll find a burger that puts those at Five Guys, In-n-Out, and Fuddruckers all to shame: the Awful Awful Burger at Nugget. I'm pretty sure this will be or already has been mentioned on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. I haven't seen a chain make that show yet, and if it was good for Fieri, it's definitely good for everyone.

BL.

The downtown stand is better than the Nugget. Last time I went to the Nugget, they were... meh.

I prefer In-N-Out over Five Guys though. :)

There's another CA chain called The Habit, which is similar to the other two, but not as good. Tiny burgers, but cheap(ish?).

Five Guys!? Really!? I've never had an In-N-Out but I hear from everyone that they're unbelievable burgers. Five Guys on the other hand makes a burger that tastes like I grilled it in my backyard. No bad per se but definitely not transcendent like many claim In-N-Out is.

Funny I stumble upon this on this evening. I just had In-N-Out tonight after the Badminton team state meet in Az. You can't beat a 4by4 animal style, animal fries, and a large vanilla shake with a possible root beer on the side. :D oh how I love thee

They opened up a Five Guy's Burgers very close to my apartment. I went to Five Guy's a few days after they opened up and was not too impressed. I decided to try them one more time a few months later. I think it took them a little bit to get their act together and make not only a good burger but an acceptable order of french fries. I am still not a fan of the fries (too soggy) but the burgers are not half bad. Then again I have not eaten anything "fast food" besides another Chicago staple "Portillo's" Portillo's still trumps anything that comes out of Five Guy's. I guess I would have to say that Five Guy's is maybe half a notch above Burger King or McDonalds which does not really make it that good in my book.

Five Guy's = C+
McDonalds= D-
Burger King=D+
Portillos=A-

I have never had an In-N-Out Burger, then again, I don't ever see myself visiting Las Angeles on my own free will again.

Portillos all the way!

They are both garbage, but if I was forced to pick, I would pick five guys. I prefer quality Chicago cuisine such as Cosi, Potbelly, Portillo's, Al's Beef, Giordano's, etc. That hamburger stuff is nothing but a heart attack.

I bet marketers love threads like this, because they plant the idea in people like me to go eat at these places :p

I just ate an In-N-Out cheeseburger. Second time eating there, but first time I wasn't really that hungry so I didn't get what the excitement was all about. But this time I have to admit it was really good, definitely better than the typical fast food burger.

I was also impressed because they had someone going to each car with a tablet device to get the order instead of you waiting to pull up to the speaker (it was very busy).

I've had Five Guys before but wasn't that impressed. So I would say In-N-Out wins for me :)

There is nearby my area (being Ontario in San Bernardino). Well, the Tommy's is on Rowland Heights, more specifically, on Colima Rd vs Fullerton Rd, just south of the Pomona Freeway.

I live in Phoenix, that's quiet the drive ;)

Yeah, Tommy's is SoCal only. Damn good food though.

On topic: In-N-Out. Dick's is excellent as well but of course that's only in Seattle.

5 months ago if you were to ask this question to me, I would say In-n-Out

now..i'd say neither, a good healthy meal at home > any fast food joint any day

As a Socal native, I've grown up on In-N-Out. I finally got a chance to try Five Guys on a trip to the DC area several years ago, after hearing about them for a long time. I liked it a lot, far better than most fast food burgers, but I still prefer In-N-Out. I'm still not quite sure why people call it a "Secret Menu" when so many people know about it. Maybe "unlisted menu" makes more sense, but not as catchy.

For those looking for almost as good a fast food burger in Socal, I recommend Fatburger.

I think McDonald's Angus burgers are slightly better than Five Guys burgers, FYI....if that says anything about Five Guys.

The best burger I had in Chicago was at the Snuggery (new place in Edison Park). The bun they use is amazing. Kuma's Corner also makes some of the best burgers in Chicago.

Chicago is blessed with a lot of places to get great burgers, hot dogs, pizza, gyros and Italian beef.

Kuma's Corner also makes some of the best burgers in Chicago.
I was at Kuma's Corner just a few months ago, visiting some friends in Chicago over a weekend. Had the YOB burger (smoked gouda, bacon, roasted red peppers, roasted garlic mayo) and it was amazing. Also had some of their macaroni and cheese, which was equally amazing.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as aloofman: SoCal native, have eaten In-N-Out all my life. But a month or two ago I went to Salt Lake City and ate at Five Guys and I gotta say it was delicious, but not as good as In-N-Out in my opinion. But In-N-Out may just remind me of home and that's why I like it better. My wallet definitely likes In-N-Out better though: $5.95 vs $9.67 (both before tax) for a double cheese, reg fries, and reg drink. I guess those peanuts aren't really free after all. :p
