I think we've been seeing a lot of that. The biggest issue right now is a lack of information. Apple just needs to tell its employees and sales partners what's going on.

Funny cause I emailed the people who make the bookarc and they said the exact same thing. Lol

What has been everyone's experience in NYC? Just moved to the area so I'm not really familiar with the stores. Is 5th Ave my best bet to find one? What about SoHo or the others?

I'm not sure I'm willing to pay for the fully loaded retina system, however. I also just want the base with 16gb RAM, since it's not upgradeable, but don't know that I can wait 4 weeks (not that I'm just impatient, my current system is failing). Is there a chance the base with 16gb ram configuration will show up in stores in the next week or so? I'm guessing no, right?

I've been trying out CTO orders for the non-retina MBP's and they are allowing ship to store/in-store pickup on custom models starting on Jun 23. Might just be a matter of time before they allow this to happen with RMBP's?

Why wouldn't you just have it shipped to yourself?

EDIT: I want real store pick-up back. Where if they have inventory, you can basically reserve it.

Stopped by 4th Street Berkeley Apple Store at 9:45am. They told me that they only have the Retina model for display only, not for sale.

Called Bay Street Emeryville Apple Store, they said they have. Drove over in 10 min, waited for 5 min for it to open and got the base model.

They said they only had one of each of the three configurations, and I got the only base model =)

BTW, the sales person was incredible helpful and nice, best experience I had in an Apple Store.

High end 15s with Ivy Bridge are in stock and ready for pickup... but no RMBPs :(

My experience so far in NYC:

Monday after the announcement I called UWS and they said tomorrow (Tuesday), so I said ok, see you then.

Tuesday at 5:20pm I stopped by after work and the "specialist" said they had JUST sold the last one 10 minutes ago, that they only received a small amount but to check with 5th ave that they definitely have some. At first I was just upset, but then started to doubt that they had any to begin with. That's because I called 5th ave right after leaving UWS and they said they dont have any but will have some soon. They chick at UWS also said to check in tomorrow at 9 am.

Wednesday morning I called UWS but it was still closed. I called 5th ave and they said they don't have any in stock yet but to call at 9am because that's when they unpack their shipment and they won't know until then. So I called back around 10am and the rep said they don't have any, the announcement was on Monday and it's only Wednesday, to be patient.

At this point I don't know when or where to check, so if anyone can post as soon as they find out more concrete info, that would be sweet. I'll also post as I keep trying.

Upon it's opening this morning, I walked into my local Apple store (5 minutes from home) on the way to work, just for kicks. All I wanted to do was look at a RMBP.

To my surprise they had them for sale, and I caved...ha..ha... I must have sniffed the glue it's put together with :)

Nice machine.

I actually live close to the Delaware Border...no sales tax + educational discount at a store in DE can save me about $325!

No dice in the Raleigh/Durham area. Got to play with a display unit in the Southpoint store....very nice indeed.

I have to respect Apple for pushing forward with Retina in notebooks. One look at a non-retina optimized website and you can tell what a shake up this will be for many people. This includes graphic designers who now have to design high resolution assets, as well as folks who need to consider the implications in terms of bandwidth that will transfer all these new ultra high resolution assets.

It's a sea change for sure....

Don't know if anyone watched the engadget review that was posted earlier, but they mention that they walked into a store in New York yesterday and picked one up with no problem. Did anyone else have that experience? Especially in New York? I thought yesterday everyone was shot down in NY. Assuming hes being honest and didn't make any phone calls to get one (which I wouldn't rule out), it seems like the stories of people being lied to over the phone are true, and picking one of these up might have more to do with luck (right place, right time, right employee) than anything else.

I live 1 minute from the 5th ave store, I've called and gone in they have 6 or so on display but none for sale, the sales person was shocked and said usually on product releases they get so much stock

Or the people saying the stores didn't have any are lying so they can get one without someone here getting it first.

The Minnesota stores seriously don't have any though. This entire state appears to be wiped clean of these.

Seem like RDU must be the last stop for FedEx/UPS from China LOL. I've called/visited every Apple Store and Best Buy within 100 miles of Raleigh and nobody has even fessed up to receiving anything more than floor models. Grr...

I too had a chance to play with the floor model at Crabtree this morning and it's a great machine. The resolution is impressively good, the scaling seems to work great and look good, and in general the build quality seems very solid. Alas, I still can't talk Apple into taking my money, just yet. :)
