I give up. Still can't find one in store anywhere. Going to bite the bullet and order online. Does anyone know if it is easy to cancel online if you do find it in store?
Yeah it is easy. When you check your order status, there should be a cancel order option if it hasnt shipped out yet. At least that's how it was when I ordered my iPad 2 last year.
Cancelling an online order is as simple as hitting a button. So long as it is still listed as processing at least. I really don't understand why apple feels the need to ship so many of these base models to stores when they can be used to fill online orders! I guess they figure since they already have our purchase promise why not try to make money elsewhere instead of shipping ours out faster!
Was at the KOP store a week ago and they seemed to have plenty of the base and the 2.6/8/512 models. Probably still do, I didn't get the impression they were having shortages there.
I have the options to check the Apple Store 5th avenue and Times Station.Do you think I'd make it Saturday 12:30 ? I am near Colombia University so where would you suggesy me to look with the taxi that would cost 5 dollars or so ? And would you please reserve it for a while would work there If I talk with a store manager ? Any help'any advice would be appreciated.

My experience with the Apple Store in Waterloo has been calling every other day and always being told they don't have any in stock or are sold out. So I went ahead and ordered online, estimated delivery Aug 3 - 10 
My holidays end on Aug 10 that is cutting it too close. There has been no stock on either Best Buy or Future Shop website. In fact, future shop has taken the retina completely off it's website. Yestereday I stopped in to one with a print out of when it was listed on the site and asked if they had any. There was none on display but the guy was very helpful and went to check their stock. They didn't have any and he said they get like one a week. Then he took my name and number and said he would hold the next one they get in for me. He said they were matching the Apple education discount with $200 off. If this actually works out I'll be cancelling my onine order.

Call the apple stores everyday and MacMall has literally like 80 at their huntington beach store

I got my rMBP in the Waterloo store. Forget about what the staff tells you when you phone ... they have NO clue.
I called the store one day, told me they got 8 in and had 1 or 2 left. But I was in Collingwood at the time. Decided to head down the next day and take a chance ... on the way down I called, spoke to a girl she said they had none. I said, really, you had 8 yesterday and none came in today? She said, we had 8 yesterday? I had no idea.
So after putting me on hold forever she came back and said we sold the 8 but just received 1 today ... of course they couldn't hold it for me ... so I called my office and had my employee race there to get it and he did.
Persistence pays off. Best time to go is between 10am and 1pm, go straight to the Genius Bar tell them you're there for a Retina Mac ... they may even tell you they have none ... you need to talk them into going and asking someone who knows 'for sure' or go to the back and check.
I went into the SF Store yesterday & they had a few. I haven't been in a store in Southern CA since last Tuesday. I saw one being purchased so I asked, and they too had a few in stock.
The Apple store at KOP has them and I believe the Best Buy there does as well.
OMG!!! I got one! Can't believe it. Thanks again for the Waterloo info. I have been phoning everyday on my way home from work and they never had them. So today I tried at 1:30pm and they said they had 2 base models in stock!! I left work and made it to the store within 15 minutes and there was one left. I am so excited. Didn't have time to stay for them to set it up for me. I assume it is pretty easy and you just follow the prompts, right? Can't wait to get home and open it up!!!!

KOP refers to a mall. It's called King of Prussia Mall and it's located in King of Prussia, PA, which is a suburb of Philadelphia. There's an Apple store in the mall that has the rMBP and there's also a Best Buy store right next to the mall that has them as well.How much would it cost to go ? where is the best buy you went to?
I'm not sure if the Walnut St. store has one. That store is much closer to you though, walking distance from Penn, so check that out first. If you have to go to the KOP store, just catch the bus, number 125. It runs from Center City to the mall.Okay'how far is that from the university ?
